Patriots draft pick improves

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff January 11, 2009 04:51 PM

Thanks to an astute e-mailer, our good pal Josh, the following nugget is passed along:

With the Eagles (9-6-1 regular-season record) and Cardinals (9-7) meeting in the NFC Championship game -- which ensures that one of them will be in the Super Bowl -- the Patriots' draft position has improved by one spot to 23d overall.

Draft order is determined by regular-season record, and the 11-5 Patriots were initially projected to draft 24th. The Eagles were initially projected to pick 22d and the Cardinals 21st.

There is one exception, however, as the Super Bowl loser (regardless of regular-season record) picks 31st and the Super Bowl winner (regardless of regular-season record) picks 32d.

Thus, the Patriots bump up the spot.

  1. So if the Baltimore or San Diego ends up in the Super Bowl, will that mean we would bump up one more spot to #22?

  1. Lets hope the Charges win. If they win, then the Pats will then draft 22nd in the first round.

  1. Go Steelers!!!! Keep that Chargers 2nd round pick early in the round.

  1. No, lets not hope the Chargers win.

If the Chargers go to the Super Bowl, their second round pick jumps to 63!

Considering how cheap second round picks come, I'd rather pick 23 and 47 rather than 22 and 63.

  1. I think many of my fellow Pats fans are missing a very important point if the Chargers go to the Super Bowl. We have their second round pick this year and that would have us slide back possibly 10 slots in the second round .Lets hope San Diego does not get to the Super Bowl.

  1. What is it like to be a Patriots fan and root for someone else in January? Can everyone just except the fact that the Pats are rebuilding and Brady has seen his best day.

  1. Carl, I think the word you meant to use was accept, not except! -10 points for being a doofus! 11-5 is not a rebuilding year and Brady or Cassell will be fine come opening day. See you in 2009.

  1. Why oh why, did the Patriots not draft LB Jon Beason out of the University of Miami in 2007. Why oh why!!!

  1. Carl you are funny...11-5 is not rebuilding.

  1. Asante Samuel, congrats on another interception in the playoffs. OK, maybe you are worth a big contract. We miss you.

  1. Another dumb post by Carl NemesJR. Feb 2008, the Eagles gave Samuel a "rediculous contract, that is why they are so bad" About a month ago, "the Patriots will go 3-13 that is why I root for playoff teams,i root for Chad Pennington". Do everyone a favor Carl and save your "intelligent"posts for that other rag paper in town. You can't spell and you are in the immortal words of Archie Bunker a MEATHEAD. Dead from the neck up! What a dope!

  1. The NFL should be consistent. If the Pats can't be in the Playoffs with an 11-5 record, all 12 playoff teams should pick after them in the draft!

  1. wow. I really like the rebuilding stage if we are going to finish with the same record as the division winner. And why don't we reserve judgment on Brady until he's, you know, back on an actual football field. We don't know if he's going to be the same, but we don't know that he's not either. And if you aren't even a Patriots fan, why do you care?

    PS. accept, not except.

  1. Good point about the second round pick from the chargers. Totally forgot about that.

Posted by Mike January 11, 09 06:54 PM
  1. What is it like to Carl Nemes Jr. and not know the difference between accept and except?

  1. Greg you are going to get your wish because the chargers are getting it handed to them with time running out them in the 4th quarter against the Steelers! So I could be wrong but i think the Patriots now have #23,#48,and #53...Barring any trade of Cassel which will net no less than 2 early round selections!

    Posted by Sportsbozo1 January 11, 09 07:18 PM
  1. Carl, should we "except" or accept?

  1. Next, we want to make sure that the NFC wins the superbowl so the Pats will remain the ONLY team to win multiple superbowls in this decade! Whoo Hoo!

  1. NO don't root for SD...we have their 2nd round pick so we're rooting for steelers...and root for ravens next wk

  1. Hey Carl,

In what world is an 11-5 team rebuilding? The Patriots have the Defensive Rookie of the Year, a former MVP and 3-time SB winner at QB, a Pro Bowl receiver on one side and a future HOF receiver on the other side, Pro Bowlers and All Pros on the O-line and D-line. They need help in the secondary and they need a pass rushing OLB and they may already have each of those things covered with rookies who got hurt this year (Crable and Wheatley or Wilhite). So I ask again: in what world is this team rebuilding?

  1. Carl, you are a troll and your posts are not worthy of response. Furthermore, I highly doubt you have any inside knowledge about Brady's condition.

The ideal Super Bowl matchup to improve Patriots draft position would be the Ravens v. the Cardinals or Eagles. Having the Cardinals or Eagles in the Super Bowl moves the Patriots up a position and having the Ravens out of the 11-5 group will also move the Patriots pick up in some rounds.

  1. Mike,

Does it really matter if we pick 23rd or 24th? We'll tag Cassell, trade him to Detroit for their 20th (via Dallas). Please don't respond to Carl, he wasn't hugged as a child and needs all the attention he can get.

P.S. By we I mean the Pats, not me per se.

  1. Ugh, there goes McDaniels....good choice though, best team out there needing a coach, young qb

  1. pls pls pls mr pioli mr belicheque (maybe he is french?), dont draft another tightend. as a matter of fact, don't draft an offensive player. laurence maroney (fragile), chad jackson (bust), dave thomas (game killer), garret mills (cut), ben watson (no hands) etc haven't worked out. stick with defense. thank u for listening. i m sure u read these posts since u have some extra time this offseason. bonne chance

  1. with SD losing we have locked up the #23, and SD's #48

    Posted by Andy M January 11, 09 09:54 PM
  1. I still think we should have pick #20. There is no way a non-playoff team like the Patriots should have a lower pick than any team from the postseason. That needs to be fixed ASAP.

Oh, and good luck McDaniels. Now who's gonna run the offense?

Posted by Trainman January 12, 09 01:31 AM
  1. Don't feed trolls...they wither away without attention...

Posted by Fuzzy Dunlop January 12, 09 09:02 AM
  1. Trainman..... Anyone will be an improvement over McDaniels.

I don't think he would accept a lower position, but if he would take it, as much as I cant stand his methods as a HC, I would think Shanahan would be a great OC for the Pats.,
