Patriots statements on Pioli

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff January 13, 2009 06:03 PM

The Kansas City Chiefs have formally announced the hiring of Scott Pioli as general manager today, and will formally hold a press conference to introduce Pioli on Wednesday.

The Patriots released the following statements:

STATEMENT FROM PATRIOTS CHAIRMAN AND CEO ROBERT KRAFT ON SCOTT PIOLI
“Scott Pioli was an integral part of the many championships the New England Patriots have celebrated this decade and I would like to thank him for his countless contributions throughout the past nine seasons. Scott is a great evaluator of talent. He is thorough in his evaluations, extremely organized and has done a tremendous job mining all possible resources to help Coach Belichick and his staff field the players needed to win consistently. He has played an important role in building a championship tradition with players that I am proud to call Patriots. On behalf of the entire Patriots organization, I wish Scott continued success in his new role and offer best wishes to his wonderful wife Dallas, and their beautiful daughter Mia. I think Clark Hunt and the Kansas City Chiefs have made a very wise hire.”

STATEMENT FROM PATRIOTS HEAD COACH BILL BELICHICK ON SCOTT PIOLI
"To sum up in words everything Scott Pioli has meant to this organization and to me personally would be difficult, if not impossible. From the day I met him, he has demonstrated a passion for football and respect for the game that is second to none. It has been extremely gratifying for me to follow Scott's career ascension from the bottom of the totem pole in Cleveland to his place as a pillar of championship teams in New England. Now with the opportunity to steer his own ship and a vision of building a winner, there is no more capable, hardworking, loyal, team-oriented person than Scott Pioli."

"On a personal level, the Belichick-Pioli bond runs far deeper than our workplace, as we and our families have shared countless memories away from football. Working side by side with one of my best friends for almost two decades is special enough in itself. But to help each other achieve success beyond our dreams is a blessing and something I will always remember and appreciate."

The Chiefs announced that Pioli will have final say over all football operations and report directly to chairman Clark Hunt.

Said Hunt: “We are very excited to welcome Scott to the Chiefs. With his proven track record of success, Scott is the finest player personnel executive in the NFL, and we look forward to his leadership in building a championship organization.”

  1. Thats a beautiful tribute by BB...

..my lordy, this is a big hit. I hope this is the end of the beginning, not the beginning of the end.

  1. Well, as we will all find out, the only person the Patriots can't ever lose is Bill Belichick. I wish that people, all the idiots that call themselves fans and can't separate the lines between fandom and the vile way some carry themselves (our own NE fans included), would read this and see that these are people, not just spitoons, targets, lightening rods for opposing negative opinion.

  1. Kansas City Huh ????? Good Luck !!! But if BB issues that kind of praise......you gotta believe that Pioli wasn't just a "yes" man........He made a great contribution.....and there ought to be more comments thanking him. Thanks Scott........and Good Luck (in a nice way)

  1. I hope (and expect) that Pioli's contributions to our franchise have been so far-reaching that his loss will actually not hurt us too greatly at all. Great leaders have great people working with them, and for them, and the culture that the Kraft-Pioli-Belichick tandem have created in New England will not go away, just because one of those who helped develop that culture has decided to move on.

I wish Scott the best of British luck, and I look forward to seeing a potentially-exciting young Kansas roster progress under his leadership. I'll be cheering for them as my secojnd team next season - his contribution to our franchise has been second to none. Thanks Scott, for makinh New England what it is today,

  1. And Tom Brady commented to reporters, "So, Scott and Josh gone, eh. Lot's going on back East, huh. Well, I've got to get the truffles and champagne home and Gisele's waiting in the Benz."

  1. "Bernard Pollard" LOL
There is a reason people want to work/play for Kraft and Belichick and it goes beyond money. The experience of being around these two driven and successful men is probably something that cannot be unmatched. These statements show that they are also very loyal, family oriented and compassionate human beings.

While the media measures Tony Dungy for his halo of saint hood, and cast Belichick and Kraft as greedy win at cost villians just because he doesn't smile at a press conference let us appreciate what we have. Good Luck Pioli.

  1. So what are the Patriots? A football university,
And this is the graduating class?
Love'm or Hate'm the franchise still gets respect.
Hopefully the new staff can be just as successful.

  1. While I am sure the Patriots will still be a great, successful organization (didn't this season prove we can roll with the punches?) I sure do hate the change of it all. But I guess that is the thing, this organization can deal with everything thrown their way and still do pretty well. (We are going to keep Belichick right????!!!!). But good luck to Pioli and McDaniels. I hope they do well.

  1. Belichick's comments reflect more insight than anything else he has said during his time here. Great tribute on his part. Good luck Scott and thanks for helping establish one of the strongest franchises in the NFL.

  1. I wish Scott Pioli the best of luck in KC. But I do have one gripe. Belichick, Pioli, and Brady are the three most integral parts of the Patriots' success. How could Pioli move to KC, the team that took out Brady?! Et tu, Pioli?!?!

  1. This is a huge loss for the Pats, hopefully they can endure. Who knows how deep the front office is. This offseason begs the question; when do they Patriots have to look elsewhere for coaching needs and front office needs.

With the exception of Dom Capers and I guess a few others, the Patriots have just been giving raises. There is talk that the Tight Ends coach may be the next OC. My guess is Billy Boy takes the reigns for a season like he did after Jenny Craigless left for ND.

I think if Capers goes to Denver, it actually could be a good thing. The secondary has had issues for the past couple seasons, which isn't necessarily Capers' fault. I think they need to just completely revamp the secondary, coaching and all.

Would the Pats consider Pacman Jones their next reclamation project? I know he was very average to sub average in the secondary last year, but he has serious talent both in the defensive backfield and the return game. Versatility is a key virtue for Belichick. Granted Pacman's rap sheet trumps "Clock Killin" Corey Dillon, Rodney Harrison, and Randy's but could he be worth a shot? Figuratively of course.

  1. The losses keep on coming Robert Kraft, and your days in the twilight are approaching quickly, as th Patriot organization is taking hit after hit. Your press releases for sustaining losses to your organization are beyond reproach.

There comes a time in corporate America when the continued loss of key executives i.e. Disney, and other great American companies materially impacts the stockholders of the organization where profits dwindle to losses and stockholders get angry and stop investing. Beware Robert Kraft your long range planning is running in the red ,and others will capitalize by these losses.

  1. How can we let him get away, I do wish you luck Scott, but be careful what you ask for. Not sure why you would want to leave and take on a project and possibly leave a couple more rings on the table. Im sure he has been getting paid well by the Krafts and working with your best friend what could be better. I guess your quality of life will be better out of work, I never have visted KC but I will go out on a limb and say real estate will be much more affordable, get yourself a Brady/Gisele mansion.

  1. with McDaniels going to Denver and pioli to KC, San Diego had better get used to 3rd place finishes (Oakland will always be 4th regardless). if they have to leave, I'm glad they left the East.

  1. To me, the management organization, on and off the field, have been as important as what goes on out between the sidelines. Now I haven't seen the specualtion of who has been groomed to fill these vacancies, but time only time will tell if this years leadership losses are markers on the way down or healthy steps along the blessed path of success that we have all enjoyed up to now.

  1. Jeez when will it all end. How bottomless is the Patriots well. Jeez.

  1. Anyone wondering why so many are jumping ship? Is this the Titanic? Has BB said "I will not be around much longer so make your deals now." The question is WHY?

Posted by Chris January 13, 09 11:16 PM
  1. Great tribute by BB - good to see him show some humanity once in a while. Pioli will certainly be missed but you had to know this day was coming. There is only room for one guy at the top and that guy for the Pats is BB, as it should be.
Good luck Scott, thanks for your contribution to the transformation of the Pats from laughing stock to the best run franchise in the NFL. I agree with gazza, with Pioli and McDaniel in the AFC West the rest of the teams in the division better get used to not going to the playoffs. I'm pretty sure the Raiders are there already.

  1. Just let us be thankful that we don't have to face these two great leaders each season. It would be great to face each ot them in a future super bowl (with the mentor winning, of course).

  1. I am sure Bob Kraft right now is more worried about the economy and his Patriot Place than 2 deserters who will be easily replaced. He probably is more worried in who will replace Circuit City at P Place when the company probably implodes on Friday. Bring In MIke Martz. The reason he did not due well at last 2 stops was because of the crap offensive rosters he had to deal with. If he was here with all of our talent watch out . The Pats offense would be unstopable. Better than 07 I Ithink Bill had to spend to much time and his genius with Jr Josh and the offense the last 3 years instead of helping out with the d . Just a hunch

  1. The New England Patriots now have become a training ground for all personnel to include coaches, players and front end management. Hate to see all these fine folks leave, but am quite proud to say I am a huge fan to one of the most respected franchises in NFL history.

  1. No-one is irreplaceable. Pioli will do an excellent job in KC just like Dimitroff is doing a great job in Atlanta. And whomever steps into that role will continue to do things the Patriots' way as long as the Krafts and BB are still in charge.

    Posted by Jim L. January 14, 09 12:49 PM
  1. First and foremost, BP ain't goin' anywhere; he's got one more NE QB to hobble yet.( just kidding, couldn't resist! ).
The magnitude of the Pioli hire is the biggest thing the Chiefs have done since acquiring Joe Montana(and Pioli is a MUCH bigger deal), and the biggest thing the Hunt Family has done since moving the team from Dallas and helping to establish the AFC( for those who don't know, when you win an AFC Championship, you are awarded the Lamar Hunt Trophy ).
Lamar's son Clark is now the man, and he's done more in two months to improve this franchise than his old man did in the last 10 years of his life, God rest his soul.
Per the comments of others, it WILL be KC and Denver again in the AFC West. The difference THIS time around is that the Chiefs are coming out on TOP.

  1. People jumping a sinking ship? Wow, Chris, you're a clownshoe. I didn't realize a well run 11-5 team with 2 great QB's is a sinking ship.

Posted by Classless January 14, 09 02:17 PM
  1. Maybe Pioli will trade Derrick Johnson & their #1 to the Pats for Deltha O'Neal, get fired, and then come back to the Pats next year.

  1. First, Congrats to SP. Sounds like a great opportunity.

Organization should not be built such that they crumble upon the departure of a few individuals. I have to believe Bob Kraft is too saavy of a businessman to allow that to happen.
