Patriots unveil 50th season logo
The Patriots today unveiled a special logo to commemorate the 2009 season, which marks the team's 50th anniversary.
More from the team's press release about the logo (on right):
The red, white and blue logo contains the text “New England Patriots” and “50 seasons.” It features both the original “Pat Patriot” logo as well as the current “stylized minuteman” trademark that was introduced in 1993. The words “50 seasons” and the “Pat Patriot” logo are centered and rest atop the Patriots’ current logo. Six stars in the design represent the six New England states.

I hope the Krafts see these results. Bring back Pat!
It's too busy. Too cluttered.
The old Pat resembles losing, the new one resembles a dynasty. Get real old farts, stick with the new one. and yes, this is way to cluttered..
Long Live Pat Patriot!
There is definitely a lot going on in this logo, but I do like the fact that both logos are on here!! Go Pats
I agree....bring back Patriot Pat, or at least a few games a year as an alternate throwback uniform.
Put Pat Patriots centered in the 50. The logo9 will look better
I think the logo is good...I doubt we will see it anywhere except a jersey patch, printed on the field, and printed on the tickets...therefore I don't think its too busy. If it was a helmet logo...then yeah, its too busy.
Any chance of getting the throwback Pat Patriot helmet & uniforms for a game or two in '09 (like they did on Thanksgiving Day 2002 at Detroit)?
Waht a surprise... a new way to make more money with all new merchandise with the new logo. Krafty and son Jon did not sleep during the marketing class at Harvard Business School.
I know we've had all our success with the "stylized minuteman" logo (whatever, it's the Flying Elvis) - however - it's TIME FOR PAT PATRIOT AGAIN!
I really doubt it will jinx us if we go back to Pat. I always loved those unis. Please, Bob, consider it!
Can we get a real petition going?
It is cluttered, now remove the flying elvis...how much better is that?
What, no tri-cornered hat from the original logo from before Pat?
The current logo doesn't say anything about the region, its fans, and the team that represents it. I much preferred the old logo, and have kept an old Patriots t-shirt just to preserve something that displayed it. Once the economy is OK ... in a year or two ... I hope it would be worth spending the $$ to change.
30.6% of you are morons. Pat Patriot was the best logo in all of sports.
Luv u Pat.
I agree, Ghost. Too much going on there.
I'd rather see a 4-time Super Bowl champ patch next year....
I like it. I'll definitely be looking for a shirt or hat at Bob's.
Why would you want to bring back Pat Patriot? I associate that logo with losing and futilty, while Elvis is all about winning and 3 Super Bowls
Do the six stars represent three SB wins and three SB losses?
I'm a longtime Pats fan who loved them when they sucked. I have a soft spot in my heart for Pat Patriot and the red jerseys. BUT, those lovable things are LOSERS! They belong in a vault and in our memories; DON'T put them on a football field. Elvis is a winner, so don't mess with success.
I like the poll element, Mike. Wouldn't mind seeing more of these.
The 50th anniversary logo is cool. I like it.
As far as the old logo vs new logo argument, I like Pat Patriot for nostalgic reasons but regrettably that logo has some baggage attached that I prefer not to think about. Flyin Elvis has the Superbowl rings. Thats what I like to be reminded of.
I would not mind seeing a red, throwback style 3rd jersey type thing every now and then but keep the current logo, nautical blue colors and the numbers style. It's perfect the way it is.
Vincent - Couldnt agree more. This is all good fun, but let's see a 4th super bowl win with #12 leading the victory parade....GO PATS
This is a special logo, and may not be used for uniforms and such, I would think.
In a perfect world, removing Flying Elvis and increasing the size of Pat Patriot would make this logo sing. As it is, for an event logo (limited shelf-life), it's fine being as busy as it is. I am just glad they did make a point to recognize Pat for us old school fans...
30.8% now Marc. Long live the flying Elvis. Symbol of champs big guy....I loved ol' Pat too but his time came and went. Just like Bruce Armstrong.
50 Years is the average waiting time to get Season Tickets so maybe we should have a Waiting List as the logo.
Pat Patriot = 0 Champioships in 35 years
Flying Elvis = 3 Championships in 15 years (plus the 1st 16-0 in history).
Why is there even a discussion???? I think people are just hung up of the Elvis moniker. Lets just call it Pat Patriot vs Pat Dynasty.
JMM70 - The Pats are going to wear the 1985 Throwback Uniform for a couple games for the 2009 season.
Bring back PAT! That logo is one of the best in all sports.
I'm with John. Pat Patriots represents futility and embarrassment. It represents the 46-10 beatdown at the hands of the Bears. The current logo represents excellence.
Are you guys deciples of Belichick or not? Game plan, adjustments, and execution is all that matters. Wearing Pat Patriot would just prove that nothing - including a cursed uniform - can stop this success train.
I gotta go with the 'flying Elvis". Pat Patriot brings back too many old and bitter memories of watching the "Patsies" getting their butts whipped week, after week, after week. If you didn't live through it you don't know the meaning of frustration!
I know that the older guys think that Pat Patriot is "old school" and therefore cooler than the Flying Elvis but, to me, that logo represents an era of chronic underachievement and ultimately failure populated by a few great players and horrible coaches. The Redcoat Pat needed to be retired. Bendict Arnold was a redcoat disguised as a Patriot, too. He shouldn't be brought back either.
Its time for Elvis to leave the building. Bring back Pat!!!
Down with Sperm Man. And while you're at it, ditch the Giant blue and go back to Patriot red.
Like the 50th logo..but Pat the Patriot is the best.
Makes for a great tattoo too..
It's the 50th season, not 50th anniversary. Anniversaries start after 1 year - anni coming from the Latin annum meaning year. What this means is that the Krafts will probably come up with a 50th Anniversary logo to sell you for the 2010 season!
And they intend to put this on helmets? It'll turn into an undifferentiated mess in any shot that isn't a close-up.
I would suggest a new logo. Neither one is of these was that great. Both were forced on us. There should be suggestions from fans and then voted on. Something new for the next 50 years would make sense. Why not?
Where's the love for the tri-corner logo???
No. No, no no. I'd rather lose with Pat Patriot and Mike Haynes, Nick Buoniconti, Gino Cappelletti, Steve Nelson, Bob Dee, Babe Parilli, Andre Tippett, Stanley Morgan and John Hannah than win with the humorless, genera-corporate Flying Elvis. The Cardinals stuck with their logo despite a virtually unbroken 52-year losing streak. I guess the Cardinals have more character than the Patriots. For that matter, the same old "B" and red stockings did just fine through 86 years of frustration. The Celtics didn't change their logo between '86 and '08. The spoked B worked just as well for Bucyk and Orr as for whoever was on the team before last season. You people whine like a Manning.
We need to wear the old school red unis for a couple games next year!!!
I like it - Pat Dynasty. Delete Flying Elvis, insert Pat Dynasty or PD for short. Down with Pat patriot, he is a sore reminder of the Pats Clipper years.
There's way too much going on. And frankly, love the team, always hated the logos. Old one and new one both make me go.. .'eh'.
Dump the gray alternate jersey and substitute the old red "Pat Patriot" laundry as the alternate uniform for at least one game each year. Logo suggestion; a blue outline map of New England with white state boundary lines and a white star with a red 50 in it on the approximate location of Foxboro.
" Do the six stars represent three SB wins and three SB losses?"
If you read the article you'd know the "Six stars in the design represent the six New England states."
"And they intend to put this on helmets? It'll turn into an undifferentiated mess in any shot that isn't a close-up."
They are not replacing the real flying elvis this will most likely go on the uniform as a patch that they wear the entire year and be painted on the field, other teams have had special logos made for their anniversaries and that is how they use them.
Bryan, I have news for you, the Pats have YET to have an O lineman that could compare to Bruce Armstrong since he retired.
As far as Pat Patriot goes, I say bring'em back! I remember the Pats team shop selling a T shirt that had a map of the New England states with Pat Patriot in the center and said New England Patriots around it.
Why not put that on the patch with a 50 around the top and "years" around the bottom?
I'd also love to see the Pats bust out the old white or red uni's sometime this year too and call me an old fart if you like I don't care but at 38 I wouldn't consider myself so just a traditionalist.
Regardless of the logo the team is still going to be great remember it's the players who earn the W's & L's NOT the logo.
Jason F
Why not just this ($$) , ca ching , who cares.
No longer the Boston Patriots...no longer playing at Harvard, Fenway Park, Schaeffer or Sullivan Stadium. No longer just primary colors. No longer nowhere to shop...or park. Boston sports fans love their miserable past...to show they can stick it out...that they are loyal...thet they didn't pack it in and become Cowboys, Raiders and Steelers fans. We know you stuck it out. We thank you for your loyalty. We're glad you're still season ticket holders in the third tier. Now take off those silly game jerseys with "Favorite Player" on the back, grow the f#ck up and buy a sweater. Let the Flying Elvis be worn by your kid while your wife wears the Pat the Patriot panties.
Pat was and is the best! I am a Pat lover Do not take that as a Sullivan fan.
Hey does any one remember the TREBLE damage award. what was the final tab on that and was Sully alive to see it?
Pat was and is the best! I am a Pat lover Do not take that as a Sullivan fan.
Hey does any one remember the TREBLE damage award. what was the final tab on that and was Sully alive to see it?
I'm definitely one of the 'older guys' but I agree 100% with Ernie. As for 'seasons' versus 'anniversary', the logo says "50 Seasons" right on it. Regarding merchandising, hey, I'm a big Pats fan and proud of it so I'll buy a "50 Seasons" cap this year and a "50th Anniversary" cap next year, if offered. They'll match my batch of various Red Sox caps!!
I agree the old Pat Patriot logo and uniforms may call to mind the era of futility or the era of good Patriot teams on the unfortunate end of bad calls and bad plays, however, my whole life I was a fan of "those" Patriots. I loved the futile, bumbling, snake bitten Patriots!!! Absolutely loved them! I realize that a lot of current Pats fans were either not alive when we stunk or were sporting 'Niners, Steelers or Cowboys jerseys at the time so they cannot relate. But the reason why the recent success of the Patriots is so enjoyable to us 'old farts' and long time stalwart Pats backers is because they were so dismal in the past.
Bring back Pat Patriot...you can't know where you're going if you don't remember where you've been.
Fat-arsed millionaires (to quote Speaker Finneran) do not read online polls, dufus.
This poll reminds of the first time the Elvis logo was presented as an alternative to Pat Patriot. I remember being at a game sometime in the '60s or '70s at which both Elvis and Pat were drawn in chalk on the field. I think it was an exhibition game against the Dolphins at BC but I may be wrong. In any case, an announcer asked the fans to vote for one logo or the other by clapping. Needless to say, Pat won by a landslide. Elvis hardly got a vote. The fact that he looked dull and smudged in comparison didn't help his cause.
Nevertheless, Elvis eventually had his day but it wasn't until James Orthwein bought the team and hired Bill Parcells to be the coach. I was surprised to see him again because I was sure he'd been forgotten, but there he was and this time there was no vote. Elvis was in, Pat was out, and I think even the most die-hard Pats fans had to admit that the new uniform and logo were an improvement. They made the team look more like a real NFL franchise and helped everyone forget the years that the Pats played more like a circus than a football team.
I thought the six stars could also mean our 6 AFC Championships that have been won. I like the design, the red ribbon is a little too big, but I like how it meshes in Pat Patriot with Flying Elvis. As a Mets fan as well, you can appreciate that someone actually took the time to design something that stands for the franchise. If anyone has seen the "Inaugural Season" patch for the Mets, it looks like a 3 year old made it.
COME ON PEOPLE!!! Pat Patriot looks like John Hannah in an 18th century costume relieving himself in the woods... Elvis has won three Super Bowls, while Pat Patriot is a legacy of the Sullivans, Michael Jackson-gate, lining up six-deep at the garbage cans in the men's room of the old stadium in order to 'do your thing', and the Rod Rust era... Let's leave Pat Patriot to the ages and move on....
Elvis has given them better luck ,making the pats King!
I like it as a patch. I would buy it embroidered on a golf shirt. I still have a desk lamp from my childhood (early 60's) that is a real conversation piece. Not too busy as long as they don't put the whole thing on the helmets. I don't associate Pat Patriot with losing any more than the 86 years our Red Sox went between World Series wins. I do mis the red shirts but you can't have everything.
Pat and the old unis are not cursed. The only curse was the horrible owenership of the Sullivans and Kiam.
I prefer the very first logo, 1960 version of the Minute Mans hat with uniform number
I strike a compromise, keep the Flying Elvis, but bring back the red jersey to replace the alternate grey. It is a win win for everyone.
hal9000, you can buy what you want and I hope you enjoy it. My comment was about the article calling it the 50th Anniversary. The point was with the Globe, not the Patriots.
Off topic, I know...but I scored tickets to the international game at wembley stadium today! woo hoo!
There is no way that logo is going on a helmet. A banner maybe but not a helmet.
I go as far back with the Pats as 1970 when I saw my 1st game with my dad at the old Schaffer Stadium. Back when you could bring in your own cooler of sandwiches just image. Unfortunately I have associated the old logo with a lot of almost there but not winning the big one. The new logo on the other hand has brought me some unbelievable memories. Like the snow bowl, knocking out them Raiders. Hey, Raider country what about the roughing the passer call that got you your first super bowl back in 76. Pay backs a bitch! Hey Steelers fans, cancel all those reservation!!! Hey Rams, We have the best offence in the league. I like our chances. Not! Adam sends it through the up rights!!! Oh my god, we did it! We finally did it!! Two more super bowls later, oh yes, we are a Dynast!! After last years 18-0 season and not winning it all, maybe we are do for a change. I guess I’m over all the ghost of the past. Maybe we should bring back the old uniforms but go with the uniforms of the late 80’s. At least for the anniversary year and see what happens……
Pat Patriot was the bomb! It is too bad they superseded him with a profile shot of Pete Carroll.
I like the Pat Patriot logo because it makes me feel like the die-hard fan I've been, even through the lean years. For me it symbolizes loyalty to the team even through the tough times. But Pat Patriot connotes that difficult period, and the new logo is the one worn during this modern dynasty. Therefore the organization should emphasize the new logo, but certain fans should be encouraged to wear the old logo with pride if they were indeed fans when that was the official logo. GO PATS!
I remember being at the Pat's game when they asked for the fans to vote with applause for which logo we, the fans, wanted. Everyone was cheering for Pat and NO ONE wanted Elvis. I remember the announcer begging people to cheer for Elvis. No one was biting
Reiss thinks they'll wear it at least once next year. Flying Elvis is the same whoosh design as the Panthers, Jaguars, Broncos, etc, etc... They all came out around the same time and they are all junk. I'm 30 but I guess I'm an old fart.
Flying Elvis is terrible, long live Pat the Patriot
Pat Patriot does not represent futility. He represents perseverance and tradition. Does George Washington represent losing to you? The Father of Our Country lost significantly more battles than he won. But he did win the war.
I watched many a game on those cold aluminum benches back when most of you didn't care about our team. The least the Patriots could do is bring back the red home throwback unis twice a year. It makes financial sense too as this would contribute to additional jersey sales.
The reason it looks too cluttered is because both logos are on it. The rest is relatively simple in design. I used to think I liked the old logo better but the new one is more associated with winning and better times. I've gotten used to it over the years and now the old Pat Patriot looks almost cartoonish to me.
the old logo is out-dated but equally as awesome as the new logo. i think they should use the red throwbacks atleast 1 game every season. i myself have a welker jersey throwback. dont copy me
Noto to nitpick on you, PatsDog, but the first regular season game at Schaeffer Stadium was November 19, 1971. Plunkett-led Pats beat the Raiders 20-6. It was my first game with my Dad, too, and I still have two of the commemorative gold (plastic) coins they gave out that day.
The Old Uniforms were better also.
dontbuythisjunk, a tip o' the cursor to you for clarifying your post and this article, which is correctly titled but immediately refers to 'anniversary' in the first sentence. Maybe instead of another big government bailout, all pro sports teams should design variously themed logos to be sold on items, the sales ought to boost the economy!
The "King" has left the building...
To be sure ....Pat rules....
You think the man in the hoodie worries about this? They can win with a logo featuring "Patricia Patriot" in a pink tut for all it really matters.
The 50th commemorative logo looks GREAT! A comtemporary mixture of the old and the new. Since 1960 was the first season, I think the logo should have been introduced for the following year (2010).
The new logo is THE CHOICE.....3 Super Bowl Wins with that logo on the helmet.
What did the old logo achieve?.......a heartbreaking, heartaching 46-10 loss in Super Bowl XX......watched if from the 50 yd. line......total misery!!!
Go with the winner....it's easier to draw and easier to recognize.
Winning Football games determined not by the Team Logos, but by Team the Excellence and People running them. Thanks Mr. Kraft and Go Pat the Patriot!
what do you expect, ita a globe poll.
Pat reminds me of childhood in the 80's and the 80's are awesome.
and for all of you who say flying elvis won the superbowls. he didn't. the players did.
I don't know, but i love this argument...classic cases for both logos. Funny stuff to ready.
I want Pat back, but i understand the Elvis logo is synonymous with all the success of recent years. They just never should have changed it. We'd have all the success *and* the good old unis.
"50 Years is the average waiting time to get Season Tickets so maybe we should have a Waiting List as the logo."
I almost peed my pants when I read that, and of course nobody else seemed to pick up on it. But what can I expect from a bunch of people crying about which logo to use? The old logo looks great on hats and t-shirts, but that's it. Wearing red uniforms makes no sense because patriots actually defeated the red coats (or do YOU people not remember history?). The newer logo, like many around the league, is used to appeal to a younger generation (who aren't checking in on this poll). And I'm sorry, but franchises need to keep bringing in younger fans, because losing seasons and having no star players (a-la the 80's) certainly doesn't. Pat Patriot is cool from a nostalgic standpoint, but the logo is way too busy to keep for any modern sports franchise. Give up the argument, it's pointless.
A throwback Welker jersey? I don't think Throwbacks jerseys should be sold unless the player has actually worn them in a game situation. So only the guys that were on the Patriots when we played the Lions in that Thanksgiving game in 2002 should have throwbacks.
I HAVE READ TOO MANY COMMENTS THAT THINK THIS LOGO IS GOING TO BE ON THE HELMETS!!!.....it is NOT going to be on the helmet you idiots!!! It is a jersey patch at the most....and maybe printed on the field and the tickets.
The logo is a testimonial to the team's history and the region that supported the team during the bad and the good. Great Job!!
Have been a fan since the early 70's with Jim Nance going out and Plunkett and Vataha coming in. Yes, Pat Patriot does represent the times when the Pats were the laughingstock with Zeke Mowat and Lisa Olson as just one example but the character itself is still "cooler". That why after 15 years Pat is still around....more now that ever.
Bring Pat back as much as they can. I like the 2 logos for the Pats but hate the 2 logos for the Bruins.........keep the Spoke only and loose the animal.
BOB KRAFT IF YOU ARE READING THIS, PLEASE BRING BACK PAT THE PATRIOT AS OUR FULLTIME LOGO.
I never use all caps, but this is such a travesty. Our logo now is like everyone elses. Like some others have pointed out, Pat the Patriot might be the best logo in sports. And we break it out once every 8 years?? huh. BRING IT BACK BOB, YOULL SELL EVEN MORE MERCHANDISE!
The people have spoken...Bring Back Pat!!!
This is a no-brainer. Everyone should vote for Pat Patriot. They never should have changed it. They should bring it back.
John Hannah looked like such a bad a$$ in the old uniform. The new one doesn't seem to have that mystique.
Count me as an "old fart season ticket holder" who prefers the flying Elvis.
Great Logo, but Pat Patriot goes as far back as I. I hope Pat makes a comeback over the Elvis.
Pat Patriot is my all time favorite logo for any sports team in any league!
I grew up with it and I still love it!!!
I would love to see Mr. Kraft and Co. bring this logo back.
"Hello, Bob?" Let's run with the retro logo this year to celebrate 50 years; I think our faithful fans have spoken and they deserve it"
ps: anyone know where I could score a Cappelletti throwback jersey??!!
At least once a year the Pats should go "old school" especially against teams from the original AFL...The red uniforms were awesome, and get rid of that silver type shirt..that's not the PATS!!
Some things should change and evolve...but not Pat Patriot. It is a GREAT logo that brings generations together like the baseball and the Red Sox do.
Probably okay for use for one season....
To the morons who commented on the 50th Anniversary Logo: you were asked to comment on which logo you like, the old Pat Patriot or the newer Flying Elvis. You weren't asked to comment on the 50th Anniversary Logo!!!!!! MORONS!
I like the Flying Elvis Pat Patriot was a logo of hard times with the franchise from stadium trouble and so forth Keep the Flying Elvis.
They're both good, but it's hard to argue with the success the Pats have had since they switched logos. Using the Cardinals as an example to keep the old logo? Please... Winning with Elvis, let's keep things the way they are now, bring back Pat Patriot once a year I have no problem with that. Super Bowls vs. perennial loser? Which would you rather have?
Pat the Patriot logo was the best in the NFL as were the Pats unis from the mid 80's. It has nothing to do with losing. The teams lost, not the unis. Bob Kraft and Bill Belichick have brought a winning attitude and tradition here, so whatever the Pats wore this decade would be a winner. So bring back PAT THE PATRIOT !!!!
Alternate Unis!!! The Chargers can't lose in their powder blues! Bring back Pat for a couple of touches next year!
Keep the Flying Elvis ! The old logo and uniforms suck. The current uniform is Top Notch...............
how about Pat standing, centered on the 50, facing sorta to the right, football held in his left hand and left arm held loosely at his side and the flying elvis embroidered on the sides of his tricorne...maybe holding a musket in his right hand, parallel to the ground? and no flying elvis at the bottom!!!
I have always thought that the new Flying Elvis looked like the old Colonial Hot Dog Logo. I like Pat!
Hey JPC, you MORON!!! you were asked to comment on which logo you like, the old Pat Patriot or the newer Flying Elvis. You weren't asked to comment on the rest of us morons who interjected (in this instance, that means provided or placed into public knowledge) our opinions about the 50th Anniversary Logo!!!! whadda maroon!!!
Pats friends,
I'm an "old fart" closing in on 50 who grew up on Pat Patriot - full disclosure.
However, the Flying Elvis symbolizes a class, winning organization that is the envy of most NFL cities. Bring back Pat for a couple of games a year if the merchandise sales help us to fund a quality CB on the free agent market, but stick with the winning logo.
The Flying Elvis SUCKS
Pat Patriot with dark skin!
As if Elvis' hat wasn't carrying enough visual weight...
It's never a good idea to mix logos.
This logo looks like something provided by a team, and fan base, that is extremely unsure of it's place in history. I didn't realize "spygate" turned you all into Red-Sox fans circa 1986! I can tell you this, the "Flying Elvis" resonates with fans around the NFL, and the world. I have the logo in my office here in LA and every woman marvels at it (how'd the Patriots do?) and every male takes pot shots at it (Boston sucks, Andy!). How much better can you have it? I say keep the organization looking forward, keep the team and fan base looking smart, and design a logo that exudes confidence. Maybe a sketch of "Pat" behind a dominant "Flying Elvis". That way you'll all get it, and America won't miss it. - Thanks
THERE ARE SEVEN STARS.
I like the new logo. The issue with Pat Patriot is that the NFL do not own the rights to it, a local guy who created it is the legal owner. That's why you'll never see Pat Patriot replace the Flying Elvii
why make us divide the old and the new , I say Pat on the sleeve and Elvis stays on the helmet!!!!!!!!!!!!! However Keep the blue not the red!
The flying elvis looks better on the new helmets; put pat patiot on the jersey sleeves and go back to the Red Jersey! At least for an alternate, the Red was much better than the blue.
Logo looks fine to me. However, somehow they should include the three super bowl wins.
For MIKE REISS: Have the other 7 original AFL teams released their 50th anniversary logos yet?
Go to Gillette on game day and look around. IMHO, more fans wear PAT gear than wear SPERM MAN gear. Not only did the fans vote in the 90's on the field, but they vote on 8 Sundays/Mondays every season. Maybe there can be two mascots. Leave sperm man on the helmets and uniforms, and replace sperm man with PAT on the field and on the boards.
Who cares... yawn.
I'm 37 years old and for me, the old logo represents the players I grew up watching, Nellie, Tippett, Hannah, Morgan, Grogan, Blackmon, Tatupu, etc. The team may not have had the success of the Brady Era, but they were for the most part a group of class players that I enjoyed watching, and tried to play like when I played the game. The old red jerseys and logo are worth dusting off a couple times a year. You have to be true to your roots, whatever they maybe.
Good thing Brady was wearing 'flying Elvis' this past season when he went down- maybe we should bring back Pat and try our luck with him. God forbid they had decided to bring back Pat this year- you'd all be blaming this whole season on him!
