Schwartz aligns with Belichick

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff January 17, 2009 06:00 AM

Jim Schwartz was officially introduced as Detroit Lions head coach on Friday and this piece by Drew Sharp of the Detroit Free Press notes a strong Patriots connection.

Writes Sharp:

When you’re the newest unknown asked to achieve the football impossible in Detroit, it certainly helps your argument if you continually repeat one name — Bill Belichick.

Jim Schwartz reminded everyone at almost every turn Friday that he learned from the Hooded Master.

He must have mentioned the New England Patriots’ coach at least a dozen times during his introductory news conference and other media interviews at Ford Field.

Belichick was one of the first people Schwartz thanked.

“I’ve been very fortunate … to have seen the way that a Bill Belichick has done things,” Schwartz said.

Schwartz was reflecting on getting his start on Belichick's Cleveland Browns staff in the early 1990s, and how he started in scouting. Schwartz told reporters that starting in the scouting realm helped form a strong base for becoming a coach.

  1. I love the idea Joe Murphy! He said he wanted to play in a 3-4.

I think this is a great hire for the Lions. I am not so sure about their front office, they should have hired Pioli.

  1. Cheap coaches get you cheap coaching. This is a coaches league. Luckily we have the best. I do not know alot about Schwartz all I know is the Titains allways come up short and to me will never get anywhere till Bud Adams fires that smug jerk Jeff Fisher. Now that Martenielli and Dungy ( he who had 4 powerfull Colts teams that lost in the playoffs and only thanks to Reche Caldwell and horrible play calling by one Josh Macdaniels won an undeserved Super Bowl) are gone Fisher and Herm Edwards are the worst in the league . O yeah I forgot about Mangenious that clown . I guess the wildly hated Pats are now the model in how to get your team on track but there is nothing like the real thing that these copy cats will see. Just think if there was no Bad Newz Kennels , Tom would never been hired in Atlanta and this drain of our front office and coaching people would probably not be happening .

  1. Even if Schwartz coaches well, he inherits a historically losing front office. He may have to put the Ladies' Aid Society on the field.

Yes, the 2000 decade Patriots are the model to follow. The two longest winning streaks in NFL history are both held by this team. They've been in the thick of the playoff hunt every single year, losing out twice on the last week on tiebreakers, and going 14-3 in the playoffs the other years. No other team has anything remotely like this record.
