Seely interests Seattle

Posted by Christopher L. Gasper, Globe Staff January 6, 2009 07:18 PM

The Seattle Seahawks have requested permission to speak with Patriots special teams coach Brad Seely. The request, which was first reported by Adam Schefter of the NFL Network, was confirmed via email by a Seahawks spokesman.

Seattle still has Bruce DeHaven in its employ as special teams coach, but with Jim Mora Jr. taking over for Mike Holmgren as Seattle's head coach staff changes could be in the offing.

The 52-year-old Seely has been the Patriots special teams coach for the last 10 seasons. His arrival in 1999, after four seasons as the Carolina Panthers special teams coach, pre-dates that of head coach Bill Belichick by a season.

  1. Would there be compensation if he left for the special teams job?

  1. Brad who?

  1. Not sure how that would work, Nate, as the Patriots could simply deny permission. It's possible the job comes with the additional title of assistant head coach, so that's something to keep in mind if the process takes course and Seely interviews.

  1. Does he want to go - or is that understood by Seattle formally requesting permission to interview him?

  1. I thought their special teams were pretty good (with the exception of some unfortunate mistakes by the players). Why is everyone piling on? Did I miss something?

  1. I don't think you ignorant fans understand. This is a coach who would be missed.

  1. Seely's the man. I'd miss him. He's done a great job here in New England. Who the heck can argue with championships?

  1. Unless they guarantee him a better title, why would he want to coach Seattle's special teams? It's not even a promotion, it's a lateral move to an inferior team?Come on Brad, you can do better.

  1. Why don't you fans ask Belichick and Parcells where Special Teams ranks in getting a ring or two. Jeez.

  1. Do any teams do any research on finding other good coaches or do they just look to the Patriots to provide coaches for the rest of the league. This is crap... I mean, I understand why, but come on... why is no one plundering the Colts staff (maybe Peyton has more to do with anything than the coaches), or the Giants staff, or even the Steeler's staff?

  1. Bill Belichick has said repeatedly that a special teams coach is often ready-made to be a head coach/assistant head coach more than an offensive/defensive coordinator. For Seely to survive the changing in coaches and for him to have worked 10 consecutive years is a testament to his terrific coaching. I believe this would be a far bigger loss that McDaniels.

  1. Bill Belichick was himself a special teams coach for awhile and he knows how important it is. He has praised Seely in the past and he is a very valuable commodity for us. I cant believe all you ignorant fans cant understand how good this guy really is. What was wrong with special teams this year?? Oakland torched us but they have great special teams. Also the Stillers caused a fumbles but thats it. Guys this will be a huge loss. I just hope we get compensation if he decides to leave.

Belichick - "Brad is one of the best coaches in the league," Belichick said yesterday. "I don't think there's anyone better in the kicking game."

  1. I would like the see the Pats somehow get the Bills special teams coach.

They are consistently in the top of the league in that department and is about the only thing the bills can do right.
