Gaffney joins Broncos

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff February 27, 2009 05:42 PM

Receiver Jabar Gaffney has agreed to terms with the Broncos today.

The agreement was first reported by NFL Network's Adam Schefter and has been confirmed by the Boston Globe.

Gaffney joins long snapper Lonie Paxton as the second Patriot to join the Broncos on the first day of free agency.

First-year Broncos head coach Josh McDaniels, the former Patriots offensive coordinator, knows what he's getting in Gaffney, who served as the team's No. 3 receiver in 2008.

Gaffney's pact is reportedly for four years, $10 million, with $3 million guaranteed.

  1. Who cares. He will always be no more than a number 3 receiver. He has Brandon Marshall and Eddie Royal in front of him. C Ya J-Bar

  1. Thanks Josh! I know its business. Maybe Gaffney can drop another key pass when the Pats play Denver this season.

  1. Rumours out of Tampa Bay that Cassel is might be going there for this years 1st Round and a conditional 2010 second round pick?

  1. Gaffney was great for two seasons but a huge disappointment last year. Dudes dropped pass in the Indy game was inexcusable for a guy that Denver game $2.5 per year to. Especially in a 3rd receiver?

  1. Good deal for him.

  1. Hope they bring in a decent #3 to pull some coverage away from Moss and Welker. Lot of FA's on the market and the draft is deep in WR.

  1. Yes is this fair play?
Wasn't the fact that Mangini signing LB Matt Chatman considered a slap at Belechick and the unwritten rule that you dont sign players from your previous organization?
Now McDaniels has signed two former Patriots. Granted we can easily replace both of them, but how many more is he going to sign?

  1. Good riddance . It goes to show what type of coach Jr is if he wants this guy. I hope they gave him big money. He sucked. I am sure BB can get someone in the draft to easily replace him . Do not be surprised if the Seahawks cut Branch and he comes back here.

  1. LEIGH BODDEN UPDATE PLEASE.

No one cares about the fringe-crappy players leaving.

  1. He was good 2 years ago but dropped a lot of key balls last year. This is no surprise...

  1. The last few years has seen the coaching staff take its hits... it was only a matter of time before Josh M. and Pioli and others start to "raid" players. Even the "minor" guys who fill a role....like the Vrabel move, players who know the gameplan will help teach the system to the new team mates... let the games begin.

  1. Bodden UPDate? Cassel Update? Anything aside from this garbage.

  1. Now what am I going to do with my Jabar Gaffney jersey? Looks like I need to buy a new one. Patriots ProShop is selling Matt Cassel's jersey for $79.95. Something tells me that's not the one to buy.

  1. I wouldn't call Gaffney a "fringe player". He was on the field for 66% of the offensive snaps, the fourth most on the team. Belichick has expressed his admiration for Laveranues Coles in the past (per Holley's book, at least), so I wonder if that's in the making? It would be even more interesting if they could work a deal with Cincy for Chad Johnson, who Belichick has also praised...

  1. C'mon now, people. Every guy in this organization contributes. Let's not forget the miracle Baltimore game to keep our "then perfect season" in tact. That was an unbelievable catch. Also, Coach Bill once referred to him as a "technician" with his routes. That has to be the highest praise you can get from Belichick. Jabs also developed a nice chemistry with Brady. Yes, he had some untimely mistakes this year, but so did Randy Moss. Good luck in Denver, Jabs. May you have better success than Patten, Givens, and Branch.

  1. Too bad Jabar turned into Reche Caldwell last season.

  1. Good luck Jabar. I'm guessing Josh Mc asked Belichick for permission before approaching these guys. That's usually how it works when coaches leave for another team and want players from their old team.

  1. Asked permission? THEY WERE FREE AGENTS.

  1. Good. Now he can drop balls somewhere else than than NE. Now if we can just get rid of Pees we'll be okay.
