No tender for Alexander; 1-year deal instead

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff February 26, 2009 11:04 AM

Patriots ILB Eric Alexander will not receive a restricted free agent tender from the Patriots; instead, he's agreed in principle to a one-year deal, according to a league source.

The one-year agreement, which has not been signed, is less than the $1.01 million low tender in restricted free agency.

It includes a minimum base salary ($620,000) and workout bonuses.

Alexander's primary contributions with the Patriots have come on special teams.

  1. I don't know how they pulled this off. I figured they'd have to give him the low tender just to keep him from testing the waters. This is a great deal for the Pats. He's a solid special teamer and can play the ILB spot if injuries hit. You need to be able to sign guys like this for vet min if you want to have enough money to spend on your big name players.

  1. Is this a vet min deal? Does his base salary cost to the cap drop to $460k?
