Part III: What is Matt Cassel worth in a trade?

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff February 4, 2009 05:35 PM

Last week, opinions from Super Bowl XLIII were shared on what Matt Cassel might yield in a trade.

NFL Network's Steve Mariucci believed that Cassel would command a first-round pick as well as something else.

Sirius Radio's Jim Miller started with a second-round pick, with the thought that it could turn into a conditional No. 1.

Mike Lombardi of the National Football Post website has shared his thoughts today, and the link is here. Lombardi sets the bar extremely high, ranking Cassel as his top free-agent quarterback and writing this:

"...It will be very expensive to sign Cassel and may also cost a high draft choice. Once the tag comes on him, all bets are off. His value is a first round pick above 15 along with a second rounder."

  1. Mike Lombardi is the most credible source...his football experience is unreal and he knows his stuff. Very happy as a Patriots fan to hear how much he think Cassel is worth.

  1. Ryan please tell me the "...(pause)" indicates sarcasm? Lombardi's name sends me into such a rage that my comment sarcasm detection gets thrown off

  1. Also Mike is a good friend of BB . Regardless this might be the change of luck that the Pats have been suffering the last 3 years with the loss at Indy , the tragedy of Marquise Hill , the Spygate bull , the loss at Superbowl 42 and of course Tom going down. After it is said and done Matt will bring alot and the picks they will get hopefully will be the begining of another strong run. Would it be nice to see a Vikes/ Pats Superbowl next year. with Matt at the controls of the Vikes

  1. I would rather trade Brady. His arm is getting weaker, he has no mobility, he has blown the last 3 playoff years, Denver int in endzone, I ndy he choked, superbowl he was rotten. His great days are over lets hand it over to the kid. I like Brady but business is business. He is taken care of the rest of his life finanially, so lets not be a bleeding heart.

  1. Hmmm, I wonder if Cass decides to throw a spanner in the works and actually decides to stay in New England for the year and fight for the job - don't laugh, NOTHING is guaranteed about Brady's return.

I first rounder BEFORE 15th pick AND a second rounder? That's not a dream, that's a fantasy - Cassel's agents will be asking for 10mill+ a year with that price tag. Would be great if it happens, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

    Cheers.

  1. The Patriots should franchise Cassel and since the Chiefs need a QB trade Cassel to the Cheifs for Tony Gonzalez. Moss, Welker, Waston, Gaffney, and Gonzalez can you say SUPERBOWL #4.

  1. oh crap... i'd like to point out i incorrectly misread the above post and thought the "Mike" in question was Mike Florio (who i hate). i LOVE Mike Lombardi and trust his opinions thoroughly. sorry Ryan. i've got to spend more time reading Reiss' Pieces and less time doing spread sheets

  1. D.Johnson. I agree and glad you mentioned Gonzalez.

Bill.W The Vikes will not give up draft picks (after the Jared Allen trade last year). THey will go for a more seasoned qb, like old man favre, stick to the same horrific play calling, and then move the team to L.A. as no one will go to the games.

    Go Pats!

  1. Alan,
Please root for another team after displaying your asinine comments about Brady.
    Let's go point by point:
    1. "His arm is getting weaker" - evidence? oh right, 50 TD's is evidence of a weak arm.
    2. "No mobility"- He is one of the least sacked QB in the NFL over the past 3 years next to the Mannings.
    3. "He has blown the last 3 playoffs"- Um where to begin: You choose to highlight the last 3 losses, but fail to mention his near perfect performance against JAX (2008), His back-from-the-dead comeback against S.D. (2007), the absolute destruction of NYJ (2007). Not to mention, he was great until the last drive against Indy (2007) and he threw what should have been the winning TD against NYG (2008) unitil the D let him down. Idiot

  1. I stand with Alan. As much as I love Tom and everything he has done for the Pats, I believe we need Matt leading this team. Just look at the injured knee situation. You've got to know that there is another "Bernard Pollard" out there that's going to aim at Tom's knee again. When, not if, Tom goes down again, who would you rather have taking the snaps, Matt or KO? If you said Matt then that's the greatest argument for Matt to stay. Matt showed great stuff going into the second half of the season and I can say that three out of the five losses were credited to the defense being run over and not being able to stop the opponent. Just as we need fresh legs on defense, we need fresh legs at QB. This is my humble opinion.

  1. Tim,
Your humble opinion is a joke... I can't believe how stupid some fans are with their comments.. Tim go watch the WNBA.
    Thanks

  1. Alan,

Are you mad Favre blew your playoff chances?

    Tim,

Bernard didn't "aim" at Bradys knee. It just happened. Thats sports. It could happen to Cassel too. Either way, I'd rather sit through 6 losing seasons than trade Brady. End of subject.

  1. About the draft,

If they got a 10-15th pick for Cassel, I could see them taking the best prospect available. Perhaps Jenkins or a pure 3-4 ILB like Maualuga. I also think they'll take a hard look at Pettigrew with their 23rd pick. BB loves TE's.

Posted by Sean In Taunton February 5, 09 08:53 AM
  1. I would rather trade posters "alan" and "Tim." They were probably outraged that BB didn't cut Cassel after training camp last year.

  1. +1 Dan - remember the outrage when Cass made the cut? The mob is Fickle, when Brady wins his next SB for us they'll be right back on the bandwagon, don't you worry ;-)

  1. Usually those franchise tags start off with the team that wants to sign the player talking to the team, and trying to work a trade for something less than the two firsts a straight free agent signing would cost. I think he'll end up going for anywhere between a 1st and 3rd, to a 1st and a 5th, when all is said and done. There are alot of teams that need a QB, and Cassel is much better than anyone coming out this year, so we'll see which team is gutsy enough to bust a move.

  1. Is Brady still a football player? The guy clearly has ambitions elsewhere. Trade him. Keep Matt. Go Patriots!

  1. You dont trade one of the best five quarterbacks of all time in their prime. If you havn't realized, Brady is in his prime. The Patriots will win two more superbowls with Brady Under the helm.
ps. As far as you saying Brady blew the superbowl, he threw no interceptions and led a 90 yard touchdown drive leaving 2:30 seconds left in the superbowl. His stats on the drive were 9-11 for about 90 yards and a touchdown. Brady won the superbowl, unfortunatly, the defence blew it.

  1. For all the Tom lovers out there (myself included.) Who was Tom before he replaced Bledsoe in 01'? He was about as well known as Matt is today. The difference is that Tom (playing consistant, conservative football) and the beast of a defense we had won the SB. Had we not gone to the SB most fans at the time would have been speculating about how much Brady would rate in a trade. That's the only difference.
In any other year, with an 11-5 record and the Pats on fire at the end of the season, we'ld probably be celebrating another SB victory. Seeing the Cardinals in the SB after the Pats pasted them 47-7 was ajoke. I love Tom, but believe Matt can and should lead this team.

  1. This kid is good but how do you think he's going to even get a chance behind The hands down MVP of the league???

Posted by norty February 6, 09 03:50 PM
  1. I say trade Cassel. Brady is still in his prime and we can use some young talent on the defensive side of the ball. This is how SB are won.
