How much does he have left in the tank? Well, we saw how much Sammy Morris had (has) left, so I'm excited about the signing. This is one of the premier backs of ALL TIME on the roster to fit in a role that was practically designed for him at this point in his career (a spot runner, 10-15 carries a game). Perfect.

as a patriots fan i belive he is good enough to be out 2nd string running back for about 2 or 3 years and when moroney gets injured he will be a decent starter

Maroney is not so great and sammy morris is deffinately not nearly as good as fred taylor so i think this is a great pick up and well worth it. We finally might have the running back we have always wanted

I'm really excited about what they Pats are doing. Getting younger in the starting lineup and clearing cap space. I heard from someone that Ray Lewis is laying low in Florida for the weekend while the Pats move around the pieces and that behind the scenes he's flying in Sunday under the radar to sign. That with the other moves, the draft with the Cassel picks and Brady's return and they'll be unstoppable this year.

I love it. It's a typical Patriot signing. You don't NEED that 25-carry, game-breaking RB to have a successful running game. Those players usually eat up a lot of precious salary cap space while RB-by-committee, which is becoming the new trend of the NFL (much to the chagrin of fantasy footballers everywhere), can get similar bottom-line results at a reduced cost. A combination of Taylor, Morris, Maroney, Faulk, and Green-Ellis is good enough, especially if Brady, Moss, and Welker do their thing.

By you basically saying sammy morris is the same player as Fred Taylor then you probably have only seen Fred play like 2 times in your life. Or you know nothing about football. Even at 33 he will still make you say wow more then once every sunday.

A lot of miles on Mr. Taylor, but he is the consumate professional that will have a positive impact on the offense, I'm sure the Patriots will use him properly and Fred will prosper in his last years in the NFL.

I'd prefer to see Lamont Jordan signed & somebody else cut loose. It's still a good signing considering it seems like every back was on the DL at sometime last season.

This is by no means an attack at you JT but after reading numerous comments on here over the past week I have one question - what's with the LaMont Jordan love affair? What did he show us during his remarkable 80-carry season that made so many people think he's a must-keep?

I'm not saying Jordan played poorly for the minimal action he saw but a lot of people who are against the Taylor signing would've rather seen the Patriots keep Jordan instead. Sure Taylor's old and has a long list of injuries but Jordan is only 2 years younger and hasn't exactly been an iron man himself.

Taylor has more a lot more miles on his tires than Jordan, who has had ONE good season as a featured back (I understand he was behind Curtis Martin on depth chart for a portion of his career). If we agree that the Patriots are going with a backfield committee anyway, I'll take the more talented guy who has a much better resume.

Living in Jacksonville, I have watched Fred Taylor for many years. He is a quality back, but he is injury prone and has never really played in the cold weather. He has piled up a lot of yards over a long career. Like the post above said, I'm not sure what he adds to the Patriots that they don't already have. I'm also not ready to give up on Maroney. He's had some bad luck. I think if he's healthy this year, he could be a real impact player. If he gets hurt again, he's done.

Garry, thank you. I think this isn't much of an addition ... I hope I'm proven wrong but there's real talent on teh depth chart at that position already. Methinks maybe Belichick's looking to spice up the competition. Remember John Lynch?

Don't understand this signing, I think right now Sammy Morris is better than Fred Taylor. Not sure what the Pats plan on doing with Maroney but I will say, BenJarvus Green-Ellis, (not sure if I spelled it right) showed a lot of potential last year. I like him and Sammy Morris to mix it up. Maroney is good, but hasn't been reliable, curious to see where the Pats are going with all this....
