Pats to host Bodden

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff February 27, 2009 06:45 AM

The Patriots are scheduled to host free-agent CB Leigh Bodden on a visit at Gillette Stadium today, the first day of free agency.

The 6-foot-1, 193-pound Bodden played for the Lions last season after spending the first five seasons of his career with the Browns. He had a career-high six interceptions with the Browns in 2007 while playing under former Patriots defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel.

The Patriots have Ellis Hobbs, Terrence Wheatley and Jonathan Wilhite as their top returning corners. Hobbs enters the final year of his contract in 2009, and adding personnel at the position -- through free agency or the draft -- would presumably be one of the Patriots' top items on the offseason agenda.

  1. Mike,

This is exactly the type of player we need. Someone with a bit of experience who desperately wants to be a part of a winning franchise.

Do you have any word on Fred Taylor? PFT reported last night that the Pats will be signing him.

  1. I'm definitely, definitely, in favor of this move.

Bodden and Hobbs as starters and last year's rookies as nickle/dime/depth is a pretty good start. Add an impact LB and a S through the draft or FA and you're looking at the kind of defense that wins Superbowls....

  1. Holy crap, Pats are interested in a CB that is over 5'9" it is a miracle!!!

  1. you guys might recall Ocho Cinco once called Bodden(a couple years back), one of the top cover corners that he faced. Yes please.........My man Ellis Hobbs gets burned too often.

  1. A CORNER OVER 6 FEET!?!?!??!?!?!

  1. Good pickup if we can get him. Hobbs needs to be replaced ASAP. I'd still go for Sean Smith, cb out of Utah in the draft.

  1. I'd still like to add a corner in the first 3 rounds if we sign Bodden but would be happy to have him. Anyone think we might cut Adalius Thomas? We need a young outside linebacker as him and Vrabel are in the back-half of their careers. Why not accelerate it and save 8 mil, spend it on Mike Goff, Mike Peterson and Bodden and try and get Cushing or Matthews, i.e. an olb who can compete from day one versus a DE converting to linebacker like Larry English who may need a Gholston-like red-shirt year. I like Thomas enough but he has not been worth the $$ (although in an uncapped year with the deals we have seen thus far, maybe he is) between the injuries and just o.k. production. Get Mike Peterson as a thumper inside, sign Goff to play right tackle, sign Bodden....draft Cushing/Mathews and get Louis Delmas in rd 2, even if they have to move up to do so. I'm also intrigued by Jason Meredith in the second round if Goff is too expensive, with Brady's injuries I do not want to see Kaczur on the field next year.

  1. Who is this scrub? He played for the Lions last year! That should say quite a bit about the type of loser this can is. Why not go after some real players!

  1. Bodden makes alot of sense for them at this point. I am really hoping they make a run at Laurinaitis if he stays where he is on the draft board. Not really sure who is out there for free agent LB's though. Think they would be better off drafting one though, gotta bump up that Linebacking core for the future in my opinion.

  1. Im not sure if I agree with your idea JaredK. I think Mike Peterson would be a mistake as he does not fit our system. The Mike Peterson role is alreayd being filled by Jerod Mayo. We need another ILB who is at least 250 and is a strong guy, someone who can sift through blocks. Secondly, Peterson got benched last year in his familiar 4-3 defense. I don't think that is a good sign. Secondly, Mike Goff is older, and as far as I know, doesn't play any tackle in SD. I thought Clarey had the right tackle spot filled. I think we should be focusing on getting younger and bigger on the offensive line. Now I can definitley see a Cushing/Matthews signing, and as you said, Louis Delmas is definitley intriguing to me. Those are good projections.

  1. You guys need to understand that there's not that many corners over 6 feet out there. When you're comparing 5'9 to 5'11 you're pretty much splitting hairs... You guys can do better than that!!

  1. Yeah get rid of Hobbs he is the reason we lost the superbowl and he gets burned
    to much.

  1. To Serious Business @12:53, not if you're 5'9"....lol

  1. I agree with the sentiment of some of these other posters, finally a corner who's taller than the average child. I'm sorry... Ellis Hobbs may be a good return man but he's an average corner who was EXPOSED big time last yr.

something else would be nice to see this yr.... a pass rush. Hopefully Tully can help in that category.

  1. If we can get Boden that would be great especially since he'll probably come at a discount because of the down year he had with the lions last year

  1. Rich, Everyone blames Hobbs and Harrison for screwing up on the Giants winning drive. I'm not that big on Hobbs so far, but it was Asante Samuel dropped that very easy interception. That was THE play of the game. It 'was' the game. Also, their offense the whole second half of the season was NOT a potent offense. They became the Colts. Great in the regular season, and terrible when it counts. The Pats scored 14 points in their loss. 14 points! And in the Colts 8 or 9 playoff losses with Manning as QB, they averaged about 12 points per loss. The SB winning teams had much better clutch receivers in big games than this team. Hobbs isn't all that good, but please look at that terrible offense the Pats had with Moss disappearing the whole second half of the year, and last year he dropped countless passes, and TD passes also. They had many weaknesses like putting their whole focus on going 16-0, and the Giants smoked us real bad!!

  1. Good points Construda, I was for some reason remembering Peterson being a bigger backer and we definitely need someone who can shed blocks next to Mayo, especially since Belichek has indicated a desire for a more athletic, ball-hawk free safety and Merriwether is an inconsistent tackler from the free safety spot. regarding Goff, I'd be really happy if we gave Jason Meredith a look in round 2 or Phil Loadholt (although his ability to contain speed rushers is concerning) or anyone to compete with Kazcur, I basically want an improvement there. Delmas definitely seems like the best strong safety package, may be there if we can get the Lions pick at #33

  1. Looks like I picked the wrong linebacker...I figured one would be gone, certainly did not get 13+ mil worth of production out of Vrabel/Thomas and since we need to get younger anyways why not accelerate the plan. I think this means some of the DE's that project to linebacker may be a little less appealing, at least in the first round. I guess if they are really high on a guy like Larry English, they could just have Woods, Cain, Guyton and Crable fight it out...assuming we take a backer early, I'd rather it be a guy who is comfortable and can be in the mix this year rather then a guy who may need a year to learn all the nuances.
