Restricted free agency; Pierre Woods decision
NFL teams have until Feb. 26 to submit qualifying offers to their restricted free agents, and the Patriots have three players in that category: OLB Pierre Woods, OL Wesley Britt and ILB Eric Alexander.
The following are the tender levels:
Other teams can sign restricted free agents to offer sheets, and if the original team doesn't match the offer, it receives draft pick compensation at the level in which the player was tendered.
The low tender level gives the original team a draft pick that corresponds with the round in which the player entered the NFL.
The Patriots' main decision this year is with Woods, who was the top backup at outside linebacker in 2008.
Because Woods entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent, the Patriots are likely to tender him at the second-round level.
Alexander and Britt would likely receive low tenders if the Patriots believe they are in their future plans.

I can't think of one memorable play he's made other than the missed fumble recovery in the Super Bowl.
Woods - 2nd round tender; Britt - low tender; Alexander - adios amigo.
Think Alexander will be a low tender too? He's a pretty good special teamer who can play a need position for the Pats (although only as a backup). IIRC, he was undrafted, so they wouldn't get any compensation for him.
Britt I think was a 6th or 7th pick of San Diego's. I'd take a 6th or 7th for him. With the way Levoir filled in this year, and with O'Callaghan coming back from injury, Britt may not even make the roster anyway. They may not even want to spend the $1M on him.
Keep Britt, dump the other two scrubs. I am sure you could find a couple of guys at Bunker Hill CC that can fill the role better.
Al, even though Woods isn't a very good OLB, he's still probably the best special teamer on the Pats. The question is whether or not a good special teamer is worth $1.5M. I think they gave Kelley Washington close to that much last year, and Woods is a better OLB than Washington is a WR...
I am not too excited about Woods. He gets a chance to play extensively and immediately gets hurt for the rest of the season. Also, (as mentioned earlier) the missed recovery in the Super Bowl was a TERRIBLE play. Let Crable take the spot and draft a couple of guys. We don't NEED to sign any of them to anything, but I expect we will in order to get compensation for losing some depth.
Sonny stole my thunder.
I'm with Sonny. How could Woods let a smaller rookie TAKE the ball away from him in the SUPERBOWL!? The scar still hasn't healed from that one.
Woods is a very good Special Teams player and an OK backup OLB. You've got to remember that Woods was undrafted. He's still young (he's played only three seasons) and could develop into a good backup or possibly a starter. Add to that the fact that the Patriots may be a bit thin at Linebacker, I believe they will make an effort to keep him.
The Pats have three LBs who are pretty old - Vrabel, Bruschi and Thomas. Then they have a whole bunch of first-year guys. Woods and Alexander are the only guy in between those extremes. And they are both decent B-guys who are familiar with the system as well as good special teamers. I'd keep them both for another year or at least until we see how the youngsters Crable, Redd, Ruud, Robertson and Craig actually pan out (plus whoever else they might pick up in free agency and/or the draft).
I thought Woods showed excellent maturation this year and was solid at OLB.....not a starter, but a solid back up. He put in a lot of playing time before getting a busted jaw. I think he has developed into their #1 back up OLB. Plus as others have mentioned he's very good on special teams. I think they give him the 2nd round tender. The Pats need to maintain a continuity from the old lions into the next generation. Not all LBs can step in and excel like Mayo....most take years to develop. I recall Brushci took a few years.
i'd let all3 walk... make room for new blood... do you really think any one of them is worth a million/year?
Alex, Sonny & Eric you'll seem to believe that Super Bowl fumble was the biggest play of the game. What about the offensive line getting waxed every play? what about other non-interrceptions that game? You people really need to get a life an understand the game of football. You'll show your ignorace every time you post! Furthormore, Woods has done a good job for what has been asked by the coaches or he wouldn't be there. Also, playing BB defense as a OLB is very difficult and it takes time to develop. Having said, if he were told to strickly pass rush you would see a different Woods BUT he is asked to drop back in coverage unlike other OLB's(just watch film and you will see for youself). Oh! and btw he's a pretty good special teamer as well. I don't hear you giving him credit for that. I see you people have ugly motives.
