ESPN.com: Jason Taylor talks Patriots

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff March 29, 2009 09:40 PM

Jason Taylor to the Patriots?

ESPN.com's Tim Graham caught up with Taylor at Taylor's charity event tonight, and writes on the possibility that the veteran defender could wind up in New England.

Writes Graham:

Jason Taylor isn't ruling out a return to the Miami Dolphins, but the pass rusher couldn't conceal his delight over reading comments that New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft would love to add him.

"I did hear that. I can't lie," Taylor said Sunday night on the red carpet of an event for the Jason Taylor Foundation at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino. "I have not talked to Robert Kraft. We'll leave it at that. Those things will sort themselves out, and hopefully in the near future so I can get back to work.

"But it's great to be wanted. It's great to be wanted. Sure, especially an organization like them or the Dolphins."

Graham's piece also includes comments from Patriots receiver Wes Welker, who attended Taylor's charity event. Welker admitted that he's been nudging Taylor toward signing with the Patriots.

Graham also posts an entry on his AFC East blog from Taylor's charity event.

  1. see ya in early June Mr Taylor, you'll look great in red, blue & silver.

  1. Hopefully he will take a cap friendly contract like 2-3 years @ 3M per season max to play for the team of the decade and win at least 2 SB rings!! If this happens the Pats will have more time to develop some defensive rookie talent under Thomas, Bruschi, Springs, Seymour, Wilfork and now Taylor!! Maybe this time we will for sure complete an undefeated season!!!

  1. Save the money, sign Wilfork and Mankins, and draft Barwin

  1. He's hoping to come here and we're hoping to have him! Coming to the Pats will rejuvinate him and he will play like the beast we've watched terrorize us for years.

  1. Hey Ryan,

I bet you never saw Barwin play one down and all of the sudden you're on the wagon because the team brought him in for a pre-draft visit? What a loser!

  1. He was born to play for Belichick. Make it happen, Patriots.

  1. This guy is way past his prime. He isn't dedicated to football the way Belichick expects his players to be. He cares more about his popularity and landing in Hollywood. They should save the money and put it towards resigning some of their young stars.

  1. I like the idea if he does not want crazy money and he brings Edeta as a cheerleader.

  1. Tampa Bay's Lynch talked when he got to camp and they dumped his ass. Keep you mouth shut Jason.

  1. I think Taylor could be a good signing. How much does he have left? Are the injuries from last year still affecting him? Are the Pats just courting him to drive up the price for the Dolphins? ...are the Dolphins doing the same thing to the Pats? Who knows? Thing is, I don't think the Pats really have a bad option going into next season. They'll get SOMEONE to play OLB (maybe he's already on the roster. Crable, anyone?) and they'll be better on defense this year than they were last year, and we know they'll be better on offense.

  1. Think Corey Dillon.
    Man wants a ring.
    Matter of professional pride.
JT can play some OLB and fill the passrushing void left by Vrabel's sad departure.
Tom will get him to come here.
And, Captain Terrific will make sure his boy plays his buttski off.
    Word.

  1. Just because there are names on our roster does not mean that those names can play football. So, no not Crable. Just because a player gets hot before the draft does not mean the Patriots should draft him. Gholston got hot as did Matt Jones a couple years earlier. I think draft buzz only helps to ensure that a player will be drafted well-above their value. So, not interested in Barwin higher than the 3rd round if at all. I like Alphonso Smith, Rey Maualuga and Larry English and I think we should package our five tradeable picks in the first three rounds to move into position for them. Mankins is only worth resigning at $5 million or less. Guards are getting $8-9 million on the market.

  1. Taylor will not be going to the Patriots! Plain and simple! I can tell you as a Dolphins fan, Taylor cares too much about the organization that made him who he is!

  1. Bad idea. Get a good defensive draft pick and sign Wilfork. Taylor is injury proned and over the hill.

  1. Suspect Welker's comments are somewhat all telling having played with him etc. but when was the last time we have heard Kraft 's name in the cheerleading mix of a prospective acquistion? WOW!
Sounds an awful lot like a full -court - press to me.....

    GO PATS!

  1. I love Jason! Not only is he a fantastic player, he's not too bad to look at either :-) I love eye candy while watching the Patriots win!!!

your organization made jason who he is?
so do you think jason might be thinking hey thanks
    for nothing.

  1. i really hope this happens...of course, i only say that because i want the Pats to win football games. it's a weird concept, i know.

  1. I like this dirty dancing that BB does with his personnel moves. He lets otherwise high-priced veterans play out their high value in the market, then if they don't get it, BB swoops in with a value deal that supports the Pats entire salary structure. Because the other teams aren't as successful, they can't support the Pats cache' or low, late bids. But expect Denver and KC to become little hotbeds of the formula. It will take a few years to get the salary structure shaken out, will Josh McDaniels and Pioli have enough rope?

  1. We should definitely sign Taylor. He can hold the WOLB position for a year or two. That way, we can draft a younger player to eventually take his place.

Here's my draft strategy (round/overall pick):

    1/23- Eben Britton, OT, Arizona
2/34- James Laurinaitis, ILB, Ohio State
    2/47- Clint Sintim, DE/OLB, Virginia
2/58- Alphonso Smith, CB, Wake Forest
    3/89- Trevor Cahill, OG, Cincinnati
3/97- Shawn Nelson, TE, Southern Miss

    More to come...

    ROFL.

You mean he cares about the organization that paid him huge sums of money with no hope of winning until he managed to get out; the organisation he refused to come back to training camp because he preferred to be on Dancing with the Stars, and the organization that begged to leave? Also known as the organization led by Bill Parcells, a person who clearly does not have an ego and would gladly admit he was wrong and take a player back.

Ok, now that we are clear which organization it is that Taylor cares so deeply about, what was your point?

  1. Who are the AFC East Champs?

Posted by MakeLoveNotWar March 30, 09 12:38 PM
  1. If he doesn't work out we can send him over the the cheerleaders. They love to dance. Bring those dancing shoes Taylor.

  1. "Taylor will not be going to the Patriots! Plain and simple! I can tell you as a Dolphins fan, Taylor cares too much about the organization that made him who he is!"

you mean the team that brought in a new coaching staff that didn't hesitate to trade him, oh and that there is a new owner now too?

I think the biggest thing the dolphins have going is he's already been established down in miami. I assume he lives down there still after playing for so many years.

Posted by mike March 30, 09 01:01 PM
  1. Would be great to add Taylor. He still has game in him and would come much cheaper than Peppers.

Hey Ryan, you can try drafting and unproven guy, but its not going to be to save money. Chances are very good Barwin would cost the Pats about the same if not more than Taylor will. These rookie contracts are no bargin.

    Posted by Jon S March 30, 09 01:49 PM
  1. There is no way he's going back to Miami. They dumped his ass on the Redskins, they don't want him and he's got nobody left on that team he cares about. I wouldn't say it's a complete certainty he'll end up in New England, frankly I'd rather have Peppers because he's younger, but at least this will give us an opportunity to draft and groom an outside linebacker.

To Phil - I would wager very heavily that the Pats will pick and OLB in the first round or, at the very least, a linebacker.

  1. Russ, to say that Crable can't play is a bit premature. Sure he's just a name on the roster because we haven't seen much outside a decent preseason showing (which is essentially useless), but I wouldn't write him off just yet. Will he be a star? Maybe. A starter? Maybe. A contributor in some way? Maybe. A preseason cut? Maybe. Something else? Maybe. Point is, we don't know. The coaching staff knows better than we do, and I'd be willing to bet even they don't know for sure.

The point was that, granted, the draft is an inexact science, but there is still some method to the madness. Highly drafted players TEND to perform better than lower drafted players. The average probowls played by players drafted in the top half of the 1st round is higher than any other group in the draft. The bottom half of the first round makes the second most probowlers, and so on. A team may hit on a superstar in the 6th round (maybe with a compensatory pick. Perhaps, say, a QB from Michigan) and they may crash and burn with a 2nd rounder (such as a WR from Florida...or Florida State......or Flor.....whatever, I'm talking about Chad Jackson. I don't follow college football). Odds are, though, that they'll do alright. The Pats haven't really MISSED with any 1st round picks in recent memory. The jury is still out on Maroney, but if he doesn't turn it around this year, I'd call him a miss. Watson seems like he was taken too high ffor what he's produced...but still a guy I don't mind having on the team. Merriweather looks good, Mayo looks dominant, Mankins is great and the D-Line is probably the best in the game. All of those guys were 1st round picks. I'll take that track record and go forward with the assumption that if they choose a LB in the 1st round, he'll do just fine.

Posted by Rob in Central MA March 30, 09 02:37 PM
  1. Personally, I would absolutely love for you guys to take Taylor--adding him to your long list of ancient Defenders. Then there will be no excuse when the up-and-coming Dolphins take the East for a second consecutive year. Your time has come and gone, Patsies!

  1. No pass rush = No Super Bowl
    2 seasons now without one.

Be certain it is a fatal flaw.

Don't know if Taylor has anything left, perhaps.

I would still do whatever it took to get Peppers.

  1. please dont tell me dolphins fans that you actually think your gonna win the afc east. oh my word.

  1. Wildcat, the "up and coming" Dolphins? That's not as young a team as you may like to believe. Joey Porter is old (still extremely effective...at least last season, but we both know he'll sink back to mediocrity in '09). Jason Ferguson is 34. Vonnie Holliday....is he still with the team? So they either have a hole or a 33 year old plugging the hole. The secondary is old. Their QB is old, and sure they have Henne....but who cares? He's Chad Henne. Let me know when he's proven that he can do anything. Ricky Williams is over 30 and sure, he has less wear and tear than the average 30 year old RB...but he's still old. He's got a year or two left before he slows down. Ronnie Brown is young, and his knees are much, much younger, considering they've been essentially created from scratch multiple times.

The Dolphins don't have the talent to take the division in a year in which the Pats are healthy. They had their moment in the sun because of Brady's injury, and even then they barely squeaked out the division and had to rely on the MOST OVERRATED QB IN THE HISTORY OF THE NFL (besides Troy Aikman) to throw a game away for them to win (I'm talking about Favre). Dolphins 7-9 in '09. Mark it down.

  1. He wasn't happy switching positions in Washington, according to yesterday's news. Does he want to be used in BB's versatile schemes?

    Posted by Derek P March 30, 09 06:51 PM
  1. Injury prone. Leave him be. We're going to need so much more to overtake the Dolpins! I don't know what we can do! It doesn't look good for us................oh....wait a minute........Bradys' back. So..........Miami is playing for second place.

  1. JT if heathly can really help the pats. He old but he still got some more in the tank. i think he would love to come here and play for a winning football team. plus i think the fact that we got wes welker and some more ex dolphin players would really help him come here. The pats are going to get a great player in that sport for the next couple years i mean would it be so bad if you have jt come in and play like a year then we pick up peppers next year. i mean they need some one established at that postition to be a great D in the league. That what killed them last year and they making moves to not let that happen this year. I think JT is option B and that the peppers trade is still the top i think that if peppers comes it will be on draft day. plus Coach Belichick knows exactly what he has to do win. The pats will kick ass this year.

  1. Robert Kraft should stick to the business end of football. He know about as much as Jerry Jones of the Cowboys. Look what happened when he picked Pete Carroll to coach the Patriots. What has Jerry Jones done since Jimmy Johnson stopped picking and coaching the Cowboys.

  1. I don't think we need anything big besides young draft picks 2 build our team on, sure Taylor is still good but how do we know he is going to play a full season.
