HEATH EVANS IN NEW ORLEANS: Mike Triplett of the Times-Picayune catches up with Heath Evans after the fullback agreed to terms on a two-year deal with the Saints. Said Evans: "I always try to tell people I'm not the best at anything, but I think I'm pretty good at a lot of things ... At the end of the day, it just felt like, one, it was nice to be desired by a team that had their kind of success."
WAIT AND SEE ON TEAM'S MOVES: Sam Farmer, the respected NFL writer from the Los Angeles Times, puts together a list of winners and losers from free agency. Farmer slots the Patriots into the wait-and-see category. Of trading Mike Vrabel, Farmer writes: "Losing Vrabel is tough, as he probably has a few good years left, but at least he's not adding punch to the 3-4 systems in Denver or Cleveland, teams that could be closer to turning things around."
REVISITING MATT CASSEL TRADE: The respected Rick Gosselin of the Dallas Morning News revisits the Patriots' trade of Matt Cassel in his "Inside the NFL" column (see fourth section). Did the Patriots get shortchanged in the deal? "A high second-rounder was what the Patriots could have optimistically expected," Gosselin writes.
AND THE PATRIOTS SELECT...: Pat Kirwan of NFL.com provides his mock draft 2.0, and with the 23rd pick in the first round, the Patriots select ...

Kirwan is really sticking to this Peppers thing.
Mr Reiss -
What are the chances, percentage wise, do you think, of T Owens coming to the Pats?
What success is he talking about? The Saints in last place last year. Does he still think he's on the patriots?
Right now, I'm targeting Clay Matthews as the Pats first pick.
Glasgow - Zero percent after the signing yesterday. I don't think he would fit in well with the team whatsoever.
Drafting a running back in the first round just isn't going to happen. Why, with five actually runners on the team, would the Pats do that?
Why is everybody so high on Shawn Springs?? The guy is being released because he can't cover receivers any more. He's been in the league for what, 12 years. He is clearly at the end of his career. What happened to Leigh Bodden? Much younger, knows our system and can still cover receivers. Craft, take some money away from your Patriots Place fund and go out and sign some impact players like Bodden, maybe Macfadden, and definetly Jason Taylor!!
Mike - Think they would be comfortable with Russ Hochstein as the occassional lead back in a two back set? Versatility, right!
GlasgowPat, are there any numbers less than 0? I just don't think he can share the spotlight with anyone. Not enough balls to go around with Moss, Welker and T.O. to suit him.
Chances of TO coming to the Patriots=0.00%
Looks like we'll be switching back to more 2-TE sets with Watson and Baker and a single RB.
Everyone said that there was no chance that Randy "Throw me the damn ball" Moss wouldn't end up here, or if he did that he wouldn't fit in......what ever happened with that?
I think TO is tremedously talented (despite the drops), a hell of a downfield blocker (something Moss, although putting more effort in than in past seasons, isn't particularly good at), and might just be ready to clean up his act.
The only downside would be that with Moss, TO and Welker, teams would know they wouldn't have a chance in hell of covering them all for anything more than a second or two, so they'd probably just continuously throw the house at Brady. Hope they use at least one of those high picks on an O-lineman if they do end up signing Owens. (Understand that I don't actually think they WILL, I'm just saying I don't think it would be as bad a decision as many people think, and I do think the possibility is above 0% (although not too much more than that....but hey, hypotheticals are fun)
Hey commenter Mike - in regards to your assessment of Shawn Springs, here's what Mike Lombardi had to say.
"The only concern with signing Shawn Springs is his ability to stay healthy all season. Last year with the ‘Skins, he played as well as any corner in the NFL, and the ‘Skins’ ability to cover was a major surprise to me. Springs is a versatile player — he can play in the slot, and he can play outside corner. He’s not a safety but more of an inside corner, and he can win those inside match-ups, which is critical for good pass defense. "
If TO wants to come to Gillette, he can, I'd imagine. He'd have to take a pay cut, and publicly declare himself the 3rd receiver. He'd have to take lessons on the BB interview style. So yeah, chances are slim to none. However, if he wants rings before he retires, then there's only one place for him to go. We did it with Moss, and Dillon before him, so who knows?
People, if Owens comes here there is no stopping this offense. Teams will try but won't come close. Think about it....we never thought we would ever have a shot at 19-0 again, but this could very well do it. Who cares who is the number 1, 2 or 3 reciever, just spread the wealth. this would make Brady's comeback season all the more worth the wait. I personally get chills thinking about the possibility.
Hey Scott, I hear that loud and clear. Please keep this in mind, i'm sure washington had a much better pass rush, which helps the corners out a ton. We can't put any pressure on the quarterback so, I would rather have a guy who is still young or younger, that can stick with the WR longer. Bodden does know the defense a little being with Romeo in cleveland. Believe me, I am happy with Springs, but would love Bodden as well!!
Joe, you ask: "Who cares who is the number 1, 2 or 3 reciever"?
A: TO!!!!
People, TO is a proven cancer, consistently undermining each and every organization he's been with. Comparisons to Moss and Dillon don't hold up to the facts: while neither was a candidate for Sainthood, there was a body of evidence from their prior teams and teammates that they'd be positives on the field and in the locker room.
You TO proponents: what evidence is there that he will suddenly reverse his long established pattern of behavior? What do you base your optimism on? I see only wishful thinking.

Mike, I think the idea that he can reform his ways would be based on the contract. Obviously, you don't give the guy a 6 year $70 mil deal. You give him a 1 year deal at managable money. If he acts up, you get rid of him. It's that simple. Also, TO has been a cancer is some very weak locker rooms. The 49ers (of that era)? The Eagles? The freakin COWBOYS?? Those were all leaderless teams with weak head coaches. Granted, Parcells isn't weak, but Parcells wasn't calling the shots. Jerry Jones was and he's about as weak as they come. Andy Reid? The guy can't even control his own family, let alone a professional sports team. McNabb is a crybaby, Romo is a wimp, Garcia is too. Brady? Not so much. Belichick? The man knows how to run a team. Also, it wouldn't be like they needed him. He would need the Pats more than the Pats need him. He would need to turn his image around if he ever cared about a future after football (and yes, I think he cares about that very very much). The Pats still have Moss and Welker without TO. Are the Pats a better team with him? Sure they are. Teams succeed when Owens is on the field. A guy on Foxsports did an article about it today, and the numbers (not just his stats, but team performance, wins/losses) are astounding. The guy can flat out play (despite the drops), and consistently seems to be pretty wide open. People can say he lost a step, but the guy, along with Moss, has been the most productive receiver in the game over the past few years. He would be a huge addition and I think he'd fall in line. If not, the Pats would just leave him behind and there goes his chances.

No, TO can't flat out play. TO could flat out play once upon a time. What TO CAN do is create distractions and dramas. To even begin to postulate that the NEP are a better team with that slab of feces is an indication that you don't know jack about how the Kraft Family and Coach Belichick run an organization.
Seriously--Moss and Dillon were never anywhere close to the cancer that Owens is.
Feh to you. Feh I say.
