Extra points

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff March 7, 2009 08:30 AM

TIMEOUT IS CALLED: With a pre-planned vacation set to begin, I won't be posting on the blog for the next two weeks. But a combination of folks from the Boston Globe and Boston.com staffs have plans to keep things active here. The weekly Tuesday Patriots mailbag will return in about 2-3 weeks.

HALEY ON WHY VRABEL FITS FOR CHIEFS: Chiefs coach Todd Haley, as quoted in the Kansas City Star, touches on why Mike Vrabel is a fit for Kansas City. "You get a guy who’s used to winning. He knows how to prepare to win. Around a young team like we have, that’s a valuable asset. The important thing to me is you get a guy that’s won a lot of games in the NFL and knows how to win. I’m counting on Mike to bring a bunch of these young guys with him and kind of let them know what it takes.”

LOMBARDI ANALYZES GREG LEWIS TRADE: Mike Lombardi of the National Football Post analyzes the Patriots' acquisition of Eagles receiver Greg Lewis. Writes Lombardi: "Lewis is the right fit for the Patriots because he’s an outside wide receiver who can make plays outside the numbers and will be away from Randy Moss, who will draw all the doubles and rolled coverage. Lewis will be one-on-one on the outside, and this is where his “down the field” speed will be able to create some match-up advantages."

  1. its funny how lewis has hardly played any games.hasent been very consistent when he has,but will create mismatches???the pats need a true receiver opposite randy moss.stallworth was that guy.yes he didnt have great numbers, but defenses respected his abilities.and were forced to cover him.as well as moss, and it opened up welker all day long in the slot.

  1. Life will therefore be boring for the next 2 weeks. Enjoy Mike, you've earned it.
I don't think you'll miss the TO to NE signing! (at least I hope not)

  1. The Greg Lewis acquisition is a great one! Not only is he fast, he also runs great routes, make great catches, and when you combine his skills with Moss' abilities and Welker's inside presence/short catch & run, you have an explosive receivers core not to mention Watson, Thomas, and now Baker @ TE, with the depth at running back and Brady throwing the football we should have a far better offensive team than in 2007 maybe they won't score more points but it will be a better offensive team.

  1. You know, Romeo said exactly the same thing about Willie's move to Cleveland.
Vrabel was far more valuable to the Pats than he will ever be to the Chiefs.

That said, the Chiefs probably stand a better chance with Cassel than the Browns did with a constant QB controversey.

  1. a lot of people say good things about Lewis but if he's that good how come he hasnt gotten the stats to prove it? Eagles doesnt have a great receiver core so if he's THAT good then he shouldve climbed the latter...

  1. Vacation? The Pats gave you January off this year! Just kidding, you deserve it. You're the best. Enjoy the well deserved time off.

  1. If you think about this trade in relation to the Cassel/Vrabel trade, BB has just parlayed a 7th round quarterback (Cassel) into a wide receiver and a 7th round pick in next year's draft. Vrabel, who remains a legitimate talent, was a deal sweatener. Trading them both off relieved a great deal of cap space and in return we get a wide-out and a 7th rounder in 2010. BB sent a 2nd round pick in this year's draft in exchange for Lewis, but I'll bet it's not the 2nd rounder he got from KC. He'll keep that pick and trade away one of the lower 2nd round picks he had in his pocket. I don't think for a moment that BB has lost his mind. Fans had to know he had a plan all along.

  1. Mike, sure you want to take that vacation? Your job might not be there when you get back.

Not really... it was a a 5th rounder man, that's why the deal made at least some sense. At a minimum he replaces Kelly Washington with better receiever ablility. No more no less, but we will see if he can flourish with Brady, Moss, and Welker.

  1. Love to see them take a shot with Roy Williams (safety).... Did you see our secondary last year man? If we pursue him he would had to play a linebacker role like Cato june. This guy has zero cover skills. He would hurt our secondary big time.

  1. Vrabel "is used to winning" is another way of saying "he used to be good, not he's not, his name will look good on our jersey and in SI's football preview".
