Fred Taylor: No. 21

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff March 30, 2009 05:00 AM

Veteran running back Fred Taylor, who wore jersey No. 28 throughout his career in Jacksonville, will don No. 21 as a New England Patriot.

Safety Antwain Spann wears No. 28 in New England, and he said he was willing to give it up for Taylor. But Taylor must have preferred 21, which he wore at the University of Florida.

This 1999 story from the Florida Times-Union recaps Taylor's initial jersey choice with the Jaguars.

In New England, No. 21 was last worn by cornerbacks Randall Gay (2004-2007), Jason Webster (2008) and Deltha O'Neal (2008).

  1. So he is going back old school. I hope we have a reguvenated FT so that our running game will be more consistent this year.

  1. Sounds like this guy is ready for a chance at the title. I hope he can push Maroney at the top RB spot.

  1. Hoping to see 12-15 carries a game from Taylor to keep both him, Maroney and Morris fresh at all points during the game and season, most importantly deep into the season and play-offs.

  1. didn't Maroney say something a few years ago about Dillon taking him under his wing? I thought it was something like - he looked me right in the eye & told me he wanted nothing else but to help make me one of the all-time greats - or something like that...
If it happened, it doesn't appear Maroney listened to a word he said...he still dances around, doesn't finish runs, and rarely drops his shoulders to "'hit defenders like a man'
I'm suspect of his training/conditioning a well...I realize football is a vicious sport & players get hurt on a regular basis, but Maroney seems like he's ALWAYS hurt.
Hopefully, Taylor can get inside his head & make a difference, but I'm not counting on it...once a bust, always a bust....
Unless Maroney absolutely shines this year like a golden calf - it's time to stop wasting time with him.

  1. Number most recently worn by Deltha O'Neal.

  1. Thanks Alex K. That is now edited in. I could insert a joke here -- that O'Neal's play was so forgettable that I overlooked it -- but that would be a low blow. Just forgot it.

  1. Oneals play wasnt forgettable.......I STILL HAVE NIGHTMARES OF HIM TRYING TO COVER PEOPLE AND GETTING SMOKED EVERY TIME- DELTA- TERRIBLE, BUT UNFORTUNATELY NOT UNFORGETTABLE

  1. Fred will be the #1 back in NE. That guy is a monster - just ask Pittsburgh.

  1. Mike,

I hope this means there will be no Deltha O'Neal sightings in a Pats uniform this season ?

I do hope however, that there is a sighting on a Patriot's opponent next year, so he can get 'Mossed'

  1. Good old #28....first Curtis Martin, then Corey Dillon. That would have been a nice number for Fred Taylor in Patriot history, but 21 will fit just fine.

  1. O'neal for some reason seemed to think he was supose to tackle the recieve AFTER they had already caught the ball. its dean pees' fault for not correcting him.

  1. I just hope Fred can stay healthy. When healthy he's a great back. Maroney has been injured. I think he blew out his shoulder trying to show he could be a bruiser back like Dillon. After nursing the shoulder back he screwed it up again last year and that's why he ran out of bounds on that infamous play instead taking on the tackler. Everybody could see he wasn't right at that point and his season was done. I hope the shoulder will not be a recurring/perpetual situation. I think he also dances too much trying to find the hole. Vision is KEY.....Dillon had it, Sammy has it and Fred has it. I can only hope that Maroney develops it. I think this is a make or break year for Mr. Maroney. I hope he can stay healthy and meet his potential.

  1. To the guy that said Fred taylor was a bust! Ignorance is bliss! Feel free to look at his statistics to disprove your comment! On an all star team like the Patriots, the only bust he will be is the bust through arm tackles or end zone!
