Veteran WR Joey Galloway visits Patriots

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff March 4, 2009 11:30 PM

The Patriots have one of the strongest 1-2 wide receiver combinations in the NFL with Randy Moss and Wes Welker.

But who’s No. 3?

The Patriots explored one possibility on a Wednesday free-agent visit at Gillette Stadium – veteran Joey Galloway.

The 37-year-old Galloway has traditionally been regarded for his speed and high yards-per-catch average. Over his 14 seasons with Seattle (1995-99), Dallas (2000-2003) and Tampa Bay (2004-2008), he’s averaged 15.5 yards per reception.

Last year, he appeared in nine games, with just four starts, and was limited to 13 catches for 138 yards.

The Patriots' depth at receiver took a hit when Jabar Gaffney -- the No. 3 option in 2008 -- signed with the Broncos.

  1. As long as he's healthy, I'm all for it!

  1. I like it but i question the age. If he is adequate to fill gaffeny's spot then i wonder why did they force troy brown into retirement?

  1. could do worse that's for sure, he's definitely done something right to stay in the league for 14 years.

  1. i am still for drafting a WR in draft - we need to develop couple youngsters now before moss/welker leaves in couple of years.

  1. He had an injury-plagued 2008, but he was one of the better receivers from 2005-2007. Big play guy who could really open things up for the offense, kind of like a better version of Stallworth 2 years ago.

  1. Need someone who can stretch the field and catch the ball when thrown to him. Pats lacked speed on the wing last year. I'd love to see another veteran and a rookie come in who can learn the job.

  1. Put him with a quarterback who can actually throw the deep ball and it could revitalize his career a bit.

  1. hes just name, the guy is done. I have no issue with him trying out but lets no rely on him to be our #3. If this was 2004, it would be another issue.

  1. Preemptive strike for the millions that comment today about Owens...

TERRELL OWENS IS NOT COMING TO THE NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS!!!!!!!!!!!!

  1. nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!! don't sign him....T.O. just got released from the Cowgirls......with Bills over-hauling of oft troubled stars and egos....take a stab at him.....imagine that

    #1. reciever ...... Randy Moss
    #2.reciever ...... Wes Welker
    #2.A. reciever ........ Terrell Owens

those recievers.....would equal the best three recieving corps ever assembled

with Brady at the helm and Fred taylor running down the necks of the opposition

we would be GLORY BOUND once again

    do it !!!!

  1. Well, Terrell Owens was just cut.

  1. Kick the tires on Chad Johnson / Ocho Cinco. I think it's at least worth it to find out what it would take to get him. He only had 540yds and 3tds last year. I have to think he'd be available if the Bengals are looking to rebuild. They also must realize that Johnson won't ever be able to put his heart into what is apparently a hopeless cause. I think he could be had for a 4th rounder or less, but maybe that's just me...

  1. Anyone who posts anything about hoping the Patriots get Terrell Owens is an idiot.

  1. Never mind Joey - get TO!

Posted by Tim March 5, 09 07:38 AM
  1. Well, as long as we are looking at old WR's, I hear TO is now available... :-)

  1. WHY!
What is this team doing, I'm sorry but I think BB has lost his marbles. These players they are talking to make no sense. Why do they continue to look at the offensive side of the ball? Joey Galloway, Patrick Ramsey, Scott Young, give me a break! Why are they wasting valuable free agency time visiting with these guys? In the mean time they are bringing in guys like Chris Carr (2 starts in 4 seasons) and Mikey Adams (who could not break Cleveland or SF’s starting lineup in his 6 year career). Are you kidding me?
This is a complete JOKE! I’m sorry BB and BK, IMO one or both of you have decided to sell out and just bankroll your cash made on prior success. In this economy and with the current state of the NFL, I can’t say I blame you. I am just glad I did not get sucked into paying the highest ticket prices in the league to watch a bunch of over aged and/or third rate talent. I hope I am wrong and you go out and get some legitimate player for this woeful defense. Otherwise you can score 50 points a week but you are still not going to win championships. I lived in SD during the Dan Fouts years. They actually did that for a few years but got bounced in the playoffs by great Pittsburgh and Miami defensive teams. Nothing has changed, defense still win and we are currently not even close to the top on the most important part the team. Again, IMO we have actually gotten worst with the loss of Vrabel. I could go on this rant for hours!

  1. I think Galloway, if healthy, is still not a great option at #3. He's alright, but he's certainly not someone who commands double coverage, especially at this point in his career. I'd actually prefer someone like Mike Furrey over Galloway, but I guess it comes down to the dollars. I think the Pats need to draft a WR somewhere early, because even though they could probably find some plug-and-play veteran this season and still have an amazing year....Moss won't be able to play forever. He's got, tops, 2 good years left in him (I hope I'm dead wrong on that and he plays until he's 50, but let's be realistic) and with 4 picks in the first 2 rounds, this is the year to get younger at any position for the future....of course, do we really want the Pats picking a receiver in the 2nd round? So far they're, what, 0-2?

I think it would be great if they could lock up a younger, quasi-proven guy, a la Welker (although I don't know too many people who expected him to be as good as he turned out to be. I was really high on the signing at the time and even I didn't think it would work out nearly as well as it has).

The draft needs as I see them: OLB (unless they feel that Crable is the real deal), CB (unless they feel that Wheatley and Wilhite are getting there), maybe a safety (depending on how they feel about Sanders. I like him as a starting, but not spectacular, option), WR, OL (can never have enough good linemen), and MLB (Tedy is almost out the door). It might also be a good idea to grab a project for the DLine. The line is amazing...but that's alot of money right there. It wouldn't hurt to have a backup incase Seymour demands big dollars (again) or Wilfork can't work out an extension.

The best part is, they have young players already in the two biggest positions of need. They have Crable, and to a lesser extent, Woods on the outside and Wheatley and Wilhite at CB. If those guys came alot further than we know (because they would know a lot better than we would).....those aren't needs.

  1. Sorry Mike, I'd take Gaffney over Galloway. The Pats need to replace Gaffney with an equivalent or better, or else it was a mistake to let him go. I know he wasn't a great WR, but he didn't suck either. One bad drop last year n the Colts game, but don't forget his performance in the playoffs in 2006 and his clutch catch in the 2007 Ravens game. He was a solid # 3 and the Pats have no excuse to let him walk if they don't get some one better.

Posted by TG in NJ March 5, 09 08:28 AM
  1. As well as Gaffney played last year, why not pick up Joey for vet min? Even if has lost a step or three, at least we know he can still catch the ball

    Posted by ZH_Pats March 5, 09 08:35 AM
  1. Anyone but T.O. Seriously.

Posted by mg March 5, 09 08:39 AM
  1. Solid pickup as a #3 receiving assuming the contract is favorable to the Pats. Should be just as good or better than Gaffney was last year.

Posted by Mike March 5, 09 08:41 AM
  1. The guy is a pill!

  1. I'm sure BB would love to upgrade the defense without giving away premium draft picks. I would speculate that he's already offered the 34th pick (KC's 2nd Rd) for Peppers and was turned down. What's next? I have no idea but it will be interesting how this all plays out. I'm not defending BB, but I suggest that we hold our initial judgement until the draft is over, at the very least. He's not done rebuilding the team.

  1. Mike -

Shouldn't Wes Welker be considered the 3rd receiver and not the 2nd receiver because he doesn't usually play on the outside? Maybe its just my years playing Madden on Playstation but I always thought the "slot" receiver was considered a Y and the X and the Z play on the outside. Last year, that would make Moss the X, Gaffney the Z, and Welker the Y thus 1, 2 and 3. I know it doesn't matter all that much but it seems people refer to Welker as the 2nd receiver simply because he is the second best wide receiver on the team. Any thoughts?

  1. They will never sign TO. Never... They don't have the cap room and need to fill other holes.

Posted by Ryan March 5, 09 09:26 AM
  1. why not give aiken and slater some more reps.

Posted by Alex March 5, 09 09:34 AM
  1. Alex,

Because they are not good enough to be the 3rd WR. Pretty simple.

Posted by Ryan March 5, 09 09:58 AM
  1. I agree with Alex and sportsbozo. Give Slater some reps. The guy has lightning fast speed. Now...if he can catch the football, we would be talking....but I woundn't be surprised if they look at Slater.

Posted by Brent March 5, 09 10:06 AM
  1. Hi Jonathan. Welker is probably perceived as a No. 3 by those around the NFL, but he was playing on the outside last year in 2WR sets, so he officially graduated up to No. 2 in my book. His playtime numbers were well over Gaffneys.

  1. Madden Nerd

Third receivers do not catch 100 passes. Put down the game and come out into the sunshine.

Posted by MarkB March 5, 09 10:11 AM
  1. Slater....eh. He's not a real option at WR. If he can hold onto the ball, he can be a returner. He can be an injury replacement at safety if you get desperate...but that's about it. If Slater is taking reps at WR, he'll have us begging to resign Doug Gabriel....or Peter Gabriel for that matter.

Taking TO....wow, that would be a huge risk/reward scenario. If he was willing to set up a contract where he could be cut risk free (by having a vet min salary, and then having a roster bonus for each game, so if he gets cut, you aren't on the hook for the bonuses), I'd be willing to give it a shot (of course I have no say in the matter). Randy Moss, although never considered as bad as TO, was considered a bit of a prima donna malcontent....and he worked out pretty well. Also, the idea of having Moss, Welker and TO lined up at once is pretty damn appealing. Regardless of how crappy a person he may be....the guy can play. Also, with a real top-end QB (no offense to Romo, Jeff Garcia, or Donovan McNabb), maybe the drops wouldn't be as much of an issue. Also, if the guy is really hungry for a ring.....getting here might just be what he needs to stay in line.

  1. Torry Holt is asking for a release... He's coming off one off year but still racked up almost 800 yards on a terrible team. I'd say he would be a formidable 3rd receiver, brings veteran leadership but not over the hill.

Jonathan- you need to put down the controller. The receiver dictates the what option they are.

Posted by SS March 5, 09 10:15 AM
  1. TO IS NOT AN OPTION...
That idiot will NOT EVER wear a pats jersey... this team is NOT THAT STUPID so get over it.

I like Joey, but Torry Holt would be a heck of a lot better, IF we can get him.
The diff between Joey and Troy Brown is that Joey, despite his age just came off three 1000-yard seasons, whereas Brown has been inactive the last few years.

PS: Also, forget about Julius Peppers.. we could sign 5 free agents with the kinda paycheck hell be expecting...

  1. Heard Galloway on the Sirius NFL station the other day. Certainly fits the profile of a Patriot...humble, well-spoken, team first guy. Had nothing but positive things to say about the Bucs. I like it.

    Posted by frosty1 March 5, 09 10:54 AM
  1. You know, the Patriots just try to put the best players on the field. With a healthy Fred Taylor and Sammy Morris, you might see a lot of two tight-end sets. Try covering Moss and Welker AND a heavy run offense...

Belichick knows what he is doing. No worries here on my part.

Let's all be thankful that you're not in control of this team. Sheesh.

THis team has gotten worse on D.

  1. SS-
I'm with you on looking at Torry Holt- assuming he is available. runs great routes and would be a great looker room presence. Mike any intel on Holt????

  1. Lucas O on Julius Peppers: "we could sign 5 free agents with the kinda paycheck hell be expecting..."

Yea, but could all five of them combine for 14-20 sacks? Based on the last few years, probably not. For only twice as much money as the $4.3 million they were paying Vrabel, they could have the most physically talented defensive lineman in the league.

NO FIVE PLAYERS can bring 6'8", 300lbs, 4.4 speed, and consistent pass rush to the table. I'd rather have one Julius Peppers than 5 journeymen.

If it's possible, I'd say it'd be clear to try to trade for a Hall-of-Fame caliber talent.

  1. obviously too late now, but I was hoping Cassell for Peppers might be a straight-up swap

  1. Randy Moss matured and evolved into a leader, earning the respect of his Pats teammates and coaches. Before his arrival in Foxboro, reports from Oakland indicated that even while profoundly unhappy he often helped younger receivers and even DB's.

TO? Have we seen or heard ANYTHING remotely positive? Nada. Zip. Nothing but selfish destruction in his wake. I will be SHOCKED if BB even has a discussion with him/his agent.

Ocho Cinco is another matter as BB respects and even seems to likes him. But why spend what would be considerable cap $$ on the receiver corps that's already a major strength?

Posted by mikeinNH March 5, 09 12:57 PM
  1. Saints seem to have given up on R. Meachem. Perhaps a Meachem for Maroney trade is feasible considering NO really needs a Rb and we have 4 other good ones with Morris, Taylor, Faulk and Gree-Ellis. Just an idea, what do you guys think?

    Posted by Alex T March 5, 09 01:00 PM
  1. I think TO is the most misunderstood player in NFL history. I met him once and he was very cordial and sincere to me and he seemed to be a nice guy. I think the media has made him into an ass. He tells the truth and he wants to win. In Dallas Romo and Garret are both overrated yet TO put up decent numbers. If he came here at a decent cap # and lets face it he is 35 he should be available on the cheap side I would think the Patriot offense would have the potential to be the greatest of all time basically un stopable as long as everybody does their job . I am sure BB is salivating at the thought.

    slot-welker
    2. tj houshmandzada! if hes still out there..idk...but we cant bring t.o. to new england- he'll cry about how randy moss has his number!...and if housh is isgned already-id go for galloway...we need a 3rd wr, not another top receiver

  1. billw - The problem with TO is too many drops. That's why I wouldn't want him on my team.

  1. as a pats fan who roots for the bucs on the side i'd love this signing! if galloway could revert back to 2007 form he'd be great he's a pure deep threat but at 37 i dont know if he has anything left. if his speed is gone he's pretty much done.

Posted by Peter March 5, 09 03:50 PM
  1. Why don't the Pats pick up T.O. Their offense will be unstopable, they brought Randy Moss back to life, now they can do it for Owens. Also Tom Brady will be able to put some championship rings on his other hand.

Posted by Zach March 5, 09 04:26 PM
  1. "The Patriots have one of the strongest 1-2 wide receiver combinations in the NFL with Randy Moss and Wes Welker."

Mike, I would couch that statement with "provided Moss hasn't lost a step"(though in reality, Moss would have to lose 2 or 3 steps). I am a huge Moss fan, but I also know that sometime between 30-35, the male body starts to produce less testosterone and we get slower. I just hope we can get one more ring before Brady and Mos have to hang it up.

Posted by Veeve March 5, 09 05:37 PM
  1. Hey Ron I am sure you are the Nfl's resident expert on TO. You have no idea what went on with him at his other stops He is not a wife beater, drug addict or crack head.. We had the same bullshit that was said about Moss before he came to New England. The guy wants to win witness his performance on one leg in the Superbowl. He can not help Garcia, McNab, and Romo suck. They cannot win the big one. He realized that . Tom Brady does not suck. BB does not suck . I think the guy is smart and realizes his legacy would be elevated if he had a ring. He like BB have respect for the legacy of the game and their place in NFL history. BB will never get over the loss in the Super Bowl and what it meant to him personally in a historical perspective. TO addition could make this into a historical run. Keep your mouth shut if you do not know what drives these people

Posted by billw March 5, 09 06:37 PM
  1. I think it would be smart to get T.0. he is a great reciver and the patriots have a huge history of turning bad attitude players into amazing players we would defintly have the best offense in the league then we could spend all or most of our first day draft picks on defense which is the big hole. Torry Holt would also be a killer signing we would still be really good and just got better but then we still need to draft a reciver now to get exp from 2 futuer hall of famers (Moss, T.O.-Holt) if signed would be a amazing to work with them not to mention Welker who probly has the best hands. It would be like having a coach that plays with you

Posted by Josh Barcus March 5, 09 08:18 PM
  1. Not a bad pick,im hopeing to see him in New England,we have been known to add vets like this in the past and we dont have much luck in the draft as far as that goes but i do like Hakeem Nicks N.C. i must say.All said and done, if Joey comes to N.E. and he can stay healthy then its a great pick with Brady throwing him the ball.
