WOONSOCKET, R.I. -- In my experience covering the New England Patriots, few players have done as much charity work as left tackle Matt Light. The nine-year veteran works on behalf of several different causes.

Today at the Woonsocket (R.I.) Middle School, Light's selfless work was recognized

Light received an NFL Charities grant for $10,000, which was presented by Patriots Chairman/CEO Robert Kraft. The presentation was part of NFL Charities Week and recognizes Light’s work with his Light Foundation.

As part of the presentation, Light led a financial literacy class with seventh- and eighth-grade students.

“We’re very grateful for the opportunity to apply for a grant like this,” Light told reporters. “NFL Charities, they’re dedicated to helping guys off the field with their charitable endeavors. That is huge. I think when you have that kind of support, it makes it so much easier for us as a foundation, to know we have an organization that stands behind us and is there to help fund some of the programs that we have in place. We’re very appreciative.”

Light also announced that he is starting an annual scholarship fund in the memory of late New Bedford (Mass.) Standard Times sports writer Dan Pires.

"When you look at what Danny left behind and the people he affected with his life, he was as charitable-minded as anyone out there just by the way he lived his life," Light said.

  1. He was quite charitable to the Giants D-Line in SB 42 as well. So is he still doing that whole 'football' thing?

  1. Let it go SoBe. Sheesh, it's in the past - try to get into today and the future. Light is a very good pro-bowl type player.

  1. Really classy, Sobe! You picked a heck of a time to go after my favorite player. Namely, when he is being recognized for his charitable work. No one can be a Patriots fan and not like Matt. Nine years of service in the NFL at left tackle, for the team of the decade I might add, should be enough to silence nitwits like you.

  1. Matt is not an all pro. He gets abused by speed rushers. He's so overrated

  1. #5 31 left tackles are not all pros.... are they all weak. Whats your point?

  1. lol i love the crybabies like sobe. face it, the giants played better than the patriots. get the heck over it, it was a year and a half ago. fact of the matter is, light has won three rings as a patriots player and was incredible in two wins over the panthers and eagles.

spoiled patriots fans, no wonder other teams hate us. a team like the eagles or browns would kill for one ring, and some on here are complaining with three.

anyway, good to see matt light helping out with charities, he's a class act and a helluva football player.

  1. Ryan,

Do you know why the Giants won that game??? It's very simple. The game calling on O and the O-line. That is how they lost and you can't even debate it. The O-line cost them the SB. Matt Light sucked so bad in that game. Only a kool-aid drinking pats fan could say Light is anything, but an average at best LT.

"the giants played better than the patriots"

That's highly debateable. Because the Giants won the game does not mean they played better. But for a pathetic missed interception by Asante "Its all about me" Samuel and one of the luckiest plays of all time by Manning and Tyree the Patriots would have won the game.

But back to Light - a class guy on and off the field and yes it was classy for him to
make that long haired thug for the Dolphins (Crowder) his punk. That dread locked punk thug is a disgrace to the NFL and Light stood up for what was right and did not ignore the cheap shot that he received first from the punk. When soemone says top Crowder now who's your daddy -- he says Matt Light!

  1. Too bad the morons hd to destroy this thread.

Good move Matt with the Danny Pires scholarship.

  1. Yes Ryan (#8) only kool-aid drinking fans like the fact Matt Light is a key member of this team. If you don't like the kool-aid then I'm told Rex Ryan's doing some interesting things in New York - sounds like they're more your type of team.

Fact is Light is a class player on and off the field - a true New England Patriot. A Bill Belichick type player.
