Louisville's Wood gets look from Scarnecchia

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff March 31, 2009 03:00 PM

If the Patriots select an offensive lineman with one of their early draft picks, one name to keep on the radar is Louisville's Eric Wood.

As noted by Gil Brandt of NFL.com, Patriots offensive line coach Dante Scarnecchia carved time out of his schedule to scout Wood at Louisville's Pro Day on March 26. Wood is primarily a center, but could also fit at guard.

At the very least, the presence of Scarnecchia at Louisville's Pro Day indicates that the Patriots have not yet ruled out Wood, who is one of the more experienced interior linemen available in the draft, having started 49 games over his college career.

The Patriots are seemingly set at center with Dan Koppen, who is under contract through 2011. Starting guards Logan Mankins and Stephen Neal, however, have contracts that expire after the 2009 season.

  1. This is a guy I've been keeping tabs on. He seems to be a great fit for the Pats at G/C. Has the tenacity and athleticism they look for. He had a great game at the Senior Bowl and actually blew BJ Raji off the line for a goal line touchdown.

  1. I watched senior bowl practices, game, and combine. Wood is excellent. My choice among O lineman after round one. I hope it happens, he was outstanding in the senior bowl at guard. Gritty, solid player. Robert Ayers had a great senior bowl and is another potentially outstanding player for the Pats. I am really liking who they are looking at. If this is BB or Caserio influence, it is looking good.
