Pats not in mix for Haggans

Posted by Christopher L. Gasper, Globe Staff March 13, 2009 01:29 PM

With an obvious need for an outside linebacker after shipping Mike Vrabel to Kansas City, one low-cost, veteran option for the Patriots would be free agent Clark Haggans.

However, according to a league source, the Patriots are not in the mix for the services of Haggans, a nine-year veteran who spent last season with the Arizona Cardinals after spending his first eight NFL seasons in Pittsburgh.

The 32-year-old Haggans has drawn interest from former Patriots vice president of player personnel Scott Pioli, now the general manager of the Kansas City Chiefs. Haggans has visited the Chiefs. So, instead of being a potential Vrabel replacement in New England, Haggans could end up as Vrabel's teammate in KC.

  1. It seems like the Patriots are holding a spot for Julius Peppers, if not Jason Taylor. It's as though they are waiting for the Peppers situation to resolve itself, with Plan B being to sign Jason Taylor.

  1. Chris, please tell us about all 1,000 players the patriots are not interested in. Riveting stuff. We want Mike back.

  1. Bring in Jason Taylor for a year and draft Clay Matthews. "Redshirt" Matthews, let him learn from Taylor and Thomas, and then let him have Vrabel's position for the next 10-15 years. Clay Sr played 19 years and was a Belichick favorite. His uncle, Bruce, played 18 seasons and is one of the finest OL ever to lace em up. Bruce's dad, also named Clay, played in the NFL in the 50s. Good football genes. Sign him up.

  1. If the Patriots were to sign Julius Peppers it would mean Richard Seymour would likely not get a contract extension this season. Taylor's price would not only be cheaper but could also have a shorter contract. I would go with Taylor.

  1. Tell me again.....Who else are we not interested?
Can we stop lamenting about Asante Samuals as well? Samuals was NOT half as good as you say he was, Chris. If he was so good he wouldn't have dropped Manning's pass in the Superbowl. Good riddance
