Pats to wear throwbacks in 2009 season opener
The Patriots will be wearing replicas of their 1963 uniforms -- and the helmets with old Pat Patriot -- when they open the season on Sept. 14 against the Buffalo Bills at Gillette Stadium.
The "Monday Night Football" opener has been dubbed a legacy game by the NFL, which is commemorating the 50th anniversary season of the American Football League. The Patriots were one of the eight original AFL franchises that began play in 1960.

Both the Patriots and Bills will be wearing throwback jerseys for the game, as Buffalo will wear replicas of its 1965 uniforms. Then in the "Monday Night" nightcap of an old AFL doubleheader both the Oakland Raiders and San Diego Chargers will also wear throwback uniforms.
In a release the Patriots said that they will have three games this season where they will wear throwback jerseys designed as replicas of what the '63 team, which advanced to the AFL title game, wore.
All those games will be against other original AFL members, which also include the Denver Broncos, the Kansas City Chiefs (Dallas Texans), New York Jets (New York Titans) and Tennessee Titans (Houston Oilers).
Original AFL members on the Patriots' schedule for 2009 are the Jets (home and away), the Bills (home and away), Denver (away) and Tennessee (home).

This makes for a very vivid mental picture: TB makes his re-appearance in Foxboro wearing a #12 Pat-the-Patriot uniform to signify the franchise's 50th anniversary.
Hurry September. Hurry.
Has the team ever worn the "throwback" uniform in a game that Brady played in? Anybody?
"Then in the "Monday Night" nightcap of an old AFL doubleheader both the Oakland Raiders and San Diego Chargers will also wear throwback uniforms."
Non-news compared to Pats v. Bill classics. Bolts seem to wear the throwbacks more than their current scheme and Oakland IS a throwback.
Sweet. I always liked Pat Patriot.
pat the patriot !!!!!
You can basically run to Vegas with the pick now that they are in the throw back jerseys. Just think of the glory days of 1990 Patriots football and you'll see what I mean.
"Has the team ever worn the "throwback" uniform in a game that Brady played in? Anybody?"
I remember in 2002 they wore the Pat Patriot helmet and red jersies in a Thanksgiving Day game at Detroit. I was hoping they would be wearing the red ones again. Unfortunately, they're wearing the same ones they wore back in Bledsoe's second year, which are kind of boring.
Now that's what I'm talking about... they should wear that jersey and that helmet for the entire season. That's a uni!!
Gregg, They wore throw backs a few years ago with Brady vs Detroit Thanksgiving Day! They wore the red jerseys. Can't remember the exact year. Brady said after game that he thought the old uniforms were awesome.
In 2002, the Patriots wore their throwbacks against the Lions in Detroit. They wore the Red jerseys. It will be great to see the old Pat for the 50th Anniversary Season. But, I like the Flying Elvis jersey better. Better memories.
Hey Mike: Maybe you can start something to get the NFL to have the officials for those games wear the old ORANGE STRIPED official's jerseys that were worn in the AFL. I go back to game one, 1960, and those AFL games were some of the best times of my life as a Pats fan. $2.50 to sit in the end zone at Braves Field (BU FIeld), no nets to stop the balls from getting to us on kicks, and so many great remembrances.
Hopefully the Broncos will wear their awful stirped stockings when the Pats play them so fans can really get a good chuckle.
Hopefully, The Pats will have as many of those original players that are still alive present at the game. We know GINO will be there.
I am looking forward to that naight more than anything because for me, it was the beginning of my 50 year love for this team. I would give anything to be there, anything.
Nice to see...I prefer the old uni's anyway
In response to Gregg's Question about Brady ever playing a game wearing a throwback uni. If memory serves, I believe that Pats wore throwbacks on Thanksgiving Day 2002 at Detroit. Can anyone else out there verify that?
When we played Lions on Thanksgiving game 4-5 years ago, that time Patriots wore the old jersey
Gregg,
If I recall correctly, the Pats wore throwbacks on a Thanksgiving game a couple years back.
Hate them
I like the throw backs for a game but I think our "flying Elvis" is the best in pro sports next to the Chicago Blackhawks.
Mike, are they wearing red or white throwback unis next year?
I've been a Pats fan since '65. I really love the old unis.
Lovin' it! Loving how this team is shaping up so far as well.
Thanks everybody. As soon as I saw the first post about the Thanksgiving Day game, I remembered it. And Fred, I also remember Brady's comments now. I also recall that it was a rather lackluster win in a rather lackluster 9-7 year...but the uniforms sure looked great.
I respect Pat Patriot but, frankly, like the Flying Elvis much more. Too many bad memories with Old Pat.
What a great way to start off what I hope is a Championship Run.
I've been a Pats fan since day one, and like many of you, I can't wait for the season to get started.
Good luck to the Patriots and all of their fans!
Hey Mark FitzGerald..... seeing as you go back to day one, like I do, do you remember the AFL Ref Walter FitzGerald? I always thought he hated the Pats. Any relation? (lol)
I remember one game at Braves Field (BU) when he made what I thought was a bad call against Pats QB Tom Yewcic right in front of our seats. I was so mad that I jumped onto the field and was lunging at FitzGerald when the Boston police horse collared me from behind. I was young, and stupid. (lol)
Who cares! I hope they wear the jearsy and Brady gets hit late out of bounds crashing into Belicheat shreding both of there knees. Maybe that ugly helmet will come flying off, hit Tedy Bruschi and he will have another stroke. Hopefully I have the chance to chat with some of you patsy fans. The best game i have ever seen was the Superbowl when your 18-1 Patsies left the field heartbroken...bunch of cheaters!!
pat the patriot back !!!
great !!!
awesome !
wow...3 games...wonderfull !
i love the old unis and Pat Patriot !
will the Pats play all 3 games with red jerseys and white paints ?
"Now that's what I'm talking about... they should wear that jersey and that helmet for the entire season. That's a uni!!"
Has a truer statement ever been posted here? They need to switch to those unis permanently!
To Mike Allen: Thanks for the memory. I, too, go back to 1960 when I was 15 and went to my first game. You forgot to mention that as fans, it was easy to walk up to the players' bench and talk to them during the game. I had a brief conversation with Billy Cannon, who was with the Houston Oilers. I also am in possession of an autograph football of the first (1960) Patriot team which I purchased from Jack Rudolph (LB) in an auction of his memorabilia. Too, bad for this game that they don't wear the helmet with the TriCorn emblem as they did their first year.
I just hope BB will wear the ratty old grey hoodie & NOT that faggy-looking red sweatshirt he sported at the Superbowl loss.................
If the Pats are going to wear the throwback jersey three times it looks like it will be twice against either the Jets or Bills and once against the other (Jets/Bills). Of the 8 teams participating three have white jerseys (Patriots, Oilers, Broncos) while the other five have dark jerseys (Chargers, Jets, Chiefs, Raiders, Bills). We can rule out two teams playing with white jerseys so we won't be seeing Patriots-Broncos or Patriots-Oilers matchups (sadly). So we're left with the Bills and Jets. Its a shame, I would have enjoyed seeing the old Oilers uniforms in action against the Pat Patriot uniforms...
those old jersey's are sweet. pat the patriot helmets need to come back!
I love the idea that the Pats are going back to the old uniforms but I like the style uniforms of the 1980's rather than the 60’s. If they do decide to make it permanent then I hope they choose the 1980’s style.
Why does any team wear throwbacks? there was a reason they got new uniforms - the old ones sucked and were ugly!
To Mike Allen...
No relation at all...Thank goodness. I remember that call on Yewcic!
Geez TonyEason...
Remember when John Hannah said you should wear a dress? Your panties must be in a wad with the comments you made here. You must be a terrific sports fan to wish injuries on players...I'm guessing you must be a Jets fan, or a fan of some other loser organization. Truly, I do feel sorry for you.
yes gregg, he has worn throwback before..... you don't watch all the games?
Hey Pats Fans,
I'm looking for a couple of Fat Heads or Decals about 6-8" tall, one of Pat the Patriot and one of the Flying Elvis, anything exist in the New England sports stores like that? I got the big Patriots helmet fathead in my rec room and would like to put those two above my flat screen, if anyone knows of a place I can check on-line I'd appreciate it. I chcked fathead.com, patriot pro shop and ebay but nothing.
Thanks,
Charlie
It is about time the Patriots brought back their old uniforms. Other teams wear their throwbacks a couple of times each year.....why not us? Here's to hoping that Old Pat creates a new level of energy in our home stadium. It's been at least 5 years since they wore these uniforms....which have remained highly popular among Patriots' Nation. Let's hope Old Pat comes back again and again!!!
i agree with post n.31 (Tom): i would love to see Pats and Oilers playing with their throwbacks
anyway Pat The Patriot back is perfect ! i like our old logo a lot
let's hope the Pats will play regularly from now with old unis and the 'old' Pat
Mike,
Are they wearing the Red jerseys with the white pants ?
Thanks
I want the teams to wear REAL THROWBACK JERSEYS, with long sleeves, cotton or wool, etc,
otherwise they are just different graphics on the Vest-like ones they wear now, with no sleeves. they still look the same
get the real throwbacks or dont bother
correct...Mike : do you know if the Pats will wear the red jerseys and white paints or white jerseys and red paints ?
Go Pat Patriot ! Best Nfl logo ever !
I think it depends on your age as to which uni you love. If you're old like me, it's Pat, otherwise the younger crowd has no connection to Pat and only knows the Elvis logo and all the success we've had with that. It would have been sweet to us old guys if they had one 3 SB's wearing Pat on their head. Vindication!

Tony, it's really embarassing to be from the same part of the country as you are. Mo-ron.
I think the Patriots best uniforms were 1979.
White jerseys with Red pants, Red jerseys with white pants
Ahhh!! Steve Grogan. We miss you!
Best uniforms were from about 76...all white, red, blue, red armbands...white jerseys, white pants. Looked like pajamas. Awesome.
I have to say the best uniform was the first one - 1960 - as my dad was the one who designed the first Patriots uniform and helmet - the TriCorn design. Going through his memorabilia has been awesome!
Tom Brady wore the throwback against the Lions on Thanksgiving Day back in 2002. It was awesome seeing the great players of the dynasty wearing everyone's favorite uniform.
They also wore white jersey red pants combos in the 80's
i say the pats should wear the old pat logo on the helm , but instead of a white helm make it silver one with the '96 superbowl or current jersey as a permanent look.
The old Patriots uniforms were fantastic.
The current ones are on the dull side and they don't leave any impression at all. The old Bills uniform is a classic in its own right and it should be a great opening game this season.
