Ramsey still on radar

Posted by Gary Dzen, Boston.com Staff March 21, 2009 11:31 AM

The Patriots have Tom Brady, Kevin O'Connell and Matt Gutierrez on the roster at quarterback, and earlier this month explored the possibility of adding a fourth option -- veteran Patrick Ramsey.

The team hosted Ramsey on a free-agent visit at Gillette Stadium March 3-4.

Ramsey has yet to sign with another club, and the Denver Post reported today that he is deciding between the Patriots and Titans.

So while the Patriots' major work in free agency is over, the pursuit of Ramsey is one possibility that remains in play.

  1. Well this should really be a no brainer on his part, like all he has to do is pull out the imaginary scales and figure out where he would benefit from holding the clipboard the most !! Who would you rather learn from,Tom Brady and BB or Kerry Collins and Jeff Fisher,if its me I'm going to New England and hoping never to see the field....It worked for Matt Cassell !!

  1. Hey Guys...Does anyone have our current salary cap numbers? I lost track with all the low tier signings. Hope they still have enough left to sigh Big Vince and Mankins to long term deals. And would be nice to sign Jason Taylor down the road! I think he would just love the chance to terrorize Bill Parcells twice a year. So maybe the Pats can sign him cheap.

  1. . . . "the Patriots major work in free agency is over" . . .Are you discounting the possibility of bringing in Jason Taylor as a replacement on the defense for Mike Vrabel? I wouldn't consider that a minor move!

  1. Last year I thought O'Connell was better than Cassel from what I saw in preseason. Turns out Cassel was better than I thought, a lot better. Because of that I trust Belichick knows what he is doing. Ramsey would be another good backup. An addition of Ramsey create some good competition on the roster. Might he push Gutierrez out?

  1. Good pick up, as good to have another Vet. Hope this doesnt mean Brady wont be ready for the opener, though.

  1. What about Byron Leftwich for backup QB. Far better option than those on the roser or Ramsey

  1. I'm guessing he picks the Titans he has a better shot at taking some snaps.

  1. I know that he's an unknown quantity, but I'd rather go with O'Connell as backup right now. I believe he can be even better than Cassel was last season. And, for that matter, I like Gutierrez, too. Problem is that if Brady IS, in fact healthy, and doesnt' go down again, like Cassel, they wont get a chance to show what they can do.

  1. Carl Parisien Natick MA says: why would Rmasey come here and be 3rd or fourth on the depth chart. I wouldn't

  1. Adding Patrick Ramsey to compete with Kevin O'Connell for the backuo QB position on the Patriots would ensure that the team would be adequately protected at that critical position should Tom Brady not be 100% ready at the start of the 2009 regular season.

  1. I don't like the thought of adding Patrick Ramsey as a patriot fan. Although it maybe to early to start O'Connell and the thought of Gutierrez is scary considering hes a player who barely made the team Ramsey isn't that great an addition to what we have on our roster already behind Brady. Further more the year Matt Cassel had just shows that not only has a culture been built but a system that isn't built on stardom but merely players executing and staying discipline, and in doing so he excelled. To be honest I'd be willing to bet Mr.Belichick could get similar if not better production from O'Connell and Gutierrez at a much lower cost than Ramsey who would have to learn our system leaving room to address other areas of the team.

  1. Whats the difference between the 3 of them they are not going to sniff any significant playing time. For what it's worth you could have 2 High School QB's sitting on the bench if Tom is healthy! Look I don't care but it's good for the competition to bring another QB so there is no complacency.

  1. anymore news on Tom Bunchen? Will his "boss" let him leave the rainforest he's playing in for the last 6 months with her and get back to football this year?

  1. He'll be signed, then cut before the season starts.

  1. Bill Child, we're talking about backup quarterbacks, not windmills! Just because Leftwich is as good as Roethlisberger doesn't mean he's worth the money to bring here.

  1. It always helps to get someone who knows the Denver and Jets weaknesses. I suspect that Gutierrez isn't that good because he got cut at the end of training camp last season, and maybe BB feels better about having 3 quarterbacks.

You obviously don't belong among those talking football..............

  1. I think they need to give Gutierrez a chance too. He's a hard worker and a smart player. Cassel got his chance and I think they'll see the same from Gutierrez too if given a chance. Nobody ever thought Tom Brady would be one of the greatest if not the best QB, but got lucky and got his chance just like Cassel did too.

  1. sportsbozo:

hes an 8 year veteran... he doesnt need to "learn" anything.

also, if brady's not gonna be back for the season opener, i want o'connel in there. i dont want some chump-change veteran backup, id much rather test out what could very well be the future of the patriots at the QB position.

  1. hasn't anyone thought that bb is adding a qb for a draft day trade pkg?

Posted by bucky guntz March 25, 09 07:27 PM
  1. I agree with most of the comments above we should trust our own judgement and test the waters with the people we have. Other wise why do we keep them if their not that good.,either trade for better players or use the ones we have. I liked the little that I saw of O'Connell he could just as well be the next Brady . I'm against bringing in Ramsey give the people we have a chance to play.
