Rodney not on board with rule changes

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff March 26, 2009 10:01 AM

Rodney Harrison, who played safety for the Patriots from 2003-2008 and is currently a free agent, was a guest on Dan Patrick's radio show on Wednesday. The topic of the NFL's rule changes was discussed, and Harrison said he thinks the league has gone too far.

A summary of Harrison's comments is posted on SI.com, where the audio to the interview is also available.

Harrison told Patrick that "football is supposed to be a man's sport" and "the game is going to slow down and it's going to get softer. It's like patty-cake right now."

  1. This comment will probably open a can of worms because of the mind thought by Pats haters that Rodney is a dirty player even though many of us disagree with that premise. IMO, he is an old school hard line football player that does NOT go out to intentionally hurt anyone. He plays hard and when you do that, it is next to impossible to stop your forward motion in mid air.

  1. I totally agree with Rodney, I mean Brady getting injured was crushing and I know it hurt to see him get hurt. But I'm starting to agree with all the other players. The game is going soft. You could try to argue against it but why. Anyone with eyes could see where the league is headed. Put flags on Qb. But its ok when huge O-linemen and TE chopblock at the knees. So, what does that tell you. QBs are beginning to transfer into kickers and punters.

  1. Now Brady doesn't even have to wear a helmet or pads next year. He can wear Versace.

  1. They should just put the QB in a redshirt at this point.

  1. I agree with with Rodney. The NFL should stop playing with these rules or run the risk of doing the same thing as the NHL which is now a borring game. It's about time they realize there are two sides of the game fans cheer for. The offense and defense, not just one. However they should get rid of chop blocking. If I want to watch non-physical sport I'll watch baseball or golf. Stop screwing with my NFL!

  1. I'm just tired of people attributing rule changes to one player and/or one specific play (e.g. "Brady rule"). ANY team's fans would want their 1st-team starting [fill in position here] in every game. I imagine from a rules standpoint it's hard to protect the players and the game at the same time, glad it's not my job. It's a thankless one, obviously.

  1. Give Brady a gown and Welker a skirt.
I remember all the moaning and groaning in Patriot Land when the NFL supposedly changed the rules for the Colts. Receivers being hit and held all over the field.
Now all the fans for other teams can say the Patriot's get special treatment.

  1. Rodney's definitely a man's man. Amazing how horrible this franchise was 10 years ago and now we've gotten so many great players and teammates.

As Reiss says, enjoy this time while we have them because it'll never happen again.

  1. I want rodney to come back to the pats for 1 more year and he doesnt have to play every down.

  1. Welker hit - no argument. The player was finishing the play.

Brady, lunging at the qb's knee, intentional or not, is a little different. If Pollard had tripped and hit it...it is one thing. He was on the ground and made an effort to hit. Unless he is superman, there is no way pollard would have hit Brady above the waste so a rule like this needed....for an QB.

  1. NFL = National Fairy League

  1. That last comment "National Fairy League" is homophobic and should be removed.

  1. Yeah, I agree with Matt. Fairy's don't tackle, they slap one another and prance around.......kind of like soccer.

  1. Rubbish! Who wants to go a whole season without seeing a team field its best players? Brady vs. Manning was going to, yet again, be the highlight of the season. If Manning was injured in the same manner, then I'd be of the same opinion. You can still have hard play and hitting without obscene violence.

  1. I think there's a delicate balance between letting them play and removing situations where there's no reason to hit somebody and the risk of injury is high. People seem to forget that Brady didn't get hurt in a sack. He got hurt while throwing a completion. Now sure, Pollard was supposed to bring down Brady...but the play was over at that place on the field. The ball was gone. He also was already on the ground and just threw his helmet into Brady's knee. It wasn't a "clean play" or "playing until the whistle", it was a shot to take out Brady's knee and it worked.

With Welker...he wasn't going to catch that ball. The guy launched himself at Welker's head and knocked him out. We, as fans, may like seeing the "bone-crunching hits"...but seriously? They're still people out there doing their job. This isn't NASCAR, where the only reason to watch is to see fiery wrecks (I still don't watch, by the way. If I wanted to watch people turn in one direction and get in crashes, I'd go sit by the Pike/495 toll plaza). This is the NFL and there's an exciting game going on and you don't need people intentionally trying to injure other guys to make it fun. It's fun enough.

That said, I think that if the QB has the ball and you're trying to sack him, then do what you need to do to take him down. If the ball is gone, it's over. People will say "but how do you expect guys to just stop? Do you expect them to see if the ball is gone?" Umm...yes, yes I do. If you aren't looking at the QB, it means you're lunging (either spearing or going for the knee). The only reason you wouldn't be able to see if the ball was gone is if you got beat on the play already. Let it go.

    Thank you!
What insight. Let's not talk about the choke hold Sammy Morris tried to put on Pollard just before he hit Brady (legally). Followed by Morris diving onto Pollard's back, pushing him with greater force into "Tu-Tu Tom"
Defenders can not hit above the shoulders and now below the waist. That presents a fairly small target.
Expecting players to pull up so no Patriot gets hurt (that's the big bitch around here) is ridiculous.
Pollard was finishing the play as was Clark.
It comes down to 5 years without a Superbowl and Patriot fans continue to cry.
You all cheer and adore one of the dirtiest players in the game(Rodney), what hypocrites
