Taylor made for Pats?

Posted by Christopher L. Gasper, Globe Staff March 11, 2009 12:45 PM

With an obvious opening at outside linebacker and need for an experienced pass rusher after trading Mike Vrabel, the Patriots make sense as a possible destination for Jason Taylor, a six-time Pro Bowler and the NFL's active career sack leader with 120.5 sacks.

The former Dolphins star and "Dancing with the Stars" contestant was released by the Washington Redskins on March 2 after he wouldn't commit to attending 75 percent of the Redskins' voluntary (in name only in the NFL) off-season workout program. The 34-year-old Taylor said he would rather spend the time with his family.

Taylor and his agent, Gary Wichard, have been mum on the subject of Taylor's plans since his release, but David Hyde of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel says New England is the obvious landing spot for Taylor.

Toss in Taylor's long-time bromance with Patriots quarterback Tom Brady -- the two are friends off the field -- and Hyde seems to have a strong case.

  1. Get it done! I also wouldn't mind them taking a chance on DJ Hackett to be the #3 WR on a cheap, incentive-laden deal. He's coming off injury, is relatively young and was pretty darn good in Seattle before that. Seems like their kind of guy.

  1. Wouldn't surprise me. Tuna traded him and he might want to show he has something left. He's probably got a little left. Last year he suffered a freakish injury.
Tuna thought he was not committed to football by trading him. He may have been right.

  1. I doubt the Pats would pay too much for Taylor when they were going to release Vrabes due to money anyway. Vrabes knew the system and only had one year left. Why pay alot of $$ for Taylor when he knows half as much as Vrabel?

  1. See what happens when Reiss leaves? Words like "bromance" make it to the blog.

Just kidding CG. Keep up the good work.

  1. I like it. Do it.

  1. I think this would be a great move for the Pats. As the team's roster stands now, it's tough to find a full time starter at OLB to play opposite Adalius Thomas. Consequently, signing Taylor would be beneficial to all parties because it would allow Woods, Banta-Cain and possibly Crable to play on different occasions, while also allowing Taylor to focus on rushing the passer. I think it's critical that Taylor not be used as an every down player in order to maximize his effectiveness.

  1. WRONG!!!!!!!!!!!
This is not a good fit for the Patriots. I live in the D.C. area and saw that this guy only played in 5 or 6 games this season (I assume that the rest of the time he was with his family). When the Redskins ask for, ask for his participation in practice inorder for him to become better aquanted with teamates that he only saw for half a season, he can't because he wants more family time!
    WRONG,WRONG,WRONG
A self-centered person is self-centered no matter where he is.

  1. I can always tell a Gasper post. Mike would never use "bromance" haha Thanks for the link anyway.

  1. PLEASE! OH GOD PLEASE GO SIGN HIM, BILL.

  1. Maybe the Sox and Pats can get Taylor with Schilling together on a single contract that goes July thru January and includes some promo work. Neither one of these guys wants to work full-time anymore.

  1. I've lost all respect for Chris Gasper, the Boston Globe, the NY Times company and all of its subsidiaries(sox included) for his casual insertion of the word "bromance" in a news article/blog entry. How the mighty have fallen

  1. you did not just use the term "bromance" in the patriots blog, did you? really?
    nothing is sacred!

  1. He will be here in June at a good price I am sure. If he has any thing left only time will tell. Crable will be our new outside backer come September

  1. When is he coming? Please and thank you.

  1. Let's sign Taylor so we can put the talk to trade for an underachieving, though talented, Julius Peppers to bed. I rather have a guy that brings it every play than one who takes his talent for granted.

Taylor would likely want a one year contract anyway and the team could use the time to groom a younger player behind him. Spend the dough on Wilfork; he has earned it.

  1. I suppose as a player I'd like to see him here, but the "I don't want to be part of the team until the first game" BS doesn't seem like it would mesh well with the rest of the team. Perhaps if he was with a franchise that had more chance to contend in the NFL he might be more willing to attend pre-season activities. As a guy that shows up when he wants to, I thought the Red Sox already got rid of someone like that.

  1. Christopher, love your work, but promise me something. Promise that you will never, ever use the word "bromance" in a Patriots-related context again.

  1. let's also get roy williams and we are all set for the draft. the 23rd, 3 2nd rounders and 2 3rd rounders (because we are getting a compensatory pick for assante). we are ready to get going.

Posted by jr russo March 11, 09 02:54 PM
  1. There is really only one glarring need on this defense and it is at both Inside and outside LB. If they got Taylor on a cap friendly deal that gives them solid help outside and then in my opinion they need and likely would use their #1 and one of the Second round picks they have to go get the best LB in the draft which they could have by moving up to about 12th.

  1. can anyone decipher the long snapper situation
    why the musical chairs?/

  1. this is what we need...this is the missing piece for the D...Jason Taylor and a couple of draft picks on Defense...and we're back on the top of the AFC!

    Posted by Jorge E. March 11, 09 03:14 PM
  1. "Bromance"? Thought it was a typo, at first. Not exactly "back of all trades"...
But like Dennis, I'm grateful to Chris G. for feeding my Pieces addiction during Mike's abandonment, uh, vacation.

And I certainly trust BB to assess Jason T's current desire and abilities. After all, he's got the best benchmark imaginable with Jr. Seau.

Posted by mikeinNH March 11, 09 03:17 PM
  1. I've met Jason Taylor several times. He talks up Brady everytime. It would be a natural fit and give him a chance to win a Super Bowl. He would be foolish not to take an offer if it comes.

Posted by Marcus March 11, 09 03:23 PM
  1. Sign Taylor, then draft Mathews or Cushing with their #1 pick and have a nice rotation developing on the outside

Then, resign Rodney Harrison and then draft a Safety to be worked in with Harrison, Sanders and Merriweather.

Draft another CB with some development potential

Draft an ILB to go with Mayo and Guyton

The defense is reloaded, Brady is back, TE is improved, 3rd WR is improved, Fred Taylor to push Baloney for playing time and the Pats can fill out their roster with other development guys.

In 2010 the Pats have a good, young fast set of DBs and LBS to roam around the field. Harrison, Brushi and Hobbs are gone, better clarity on the labor agreement.

Yeah baby, the Pats will be good for another 3 years, minimum

Posted by rob March 11, 09 03:26 PM
  1. Sign him up to replace Vrabel at a discount and add some more veteran depth at SS through Roy Williams....in spite of his attitude issue which can be controlled.

  1. Does anyone think Taylor is really a team-first player? I'm not doubting his talent, but he couldn't assume a "role" when Parcells took over operations at Miami, and couldn't believe that he wasn't being fawned over. Participation in the OTA's is an example of that. Anyone?

Posted by David March 11, 09 04:10 PM
  1. #20 - you know something we don't?

Paxton went to the Broncos with McDaniels...Hodel came from the cardinals to replace him...what else were we supposed to do...not have a dedicated long-snapper?
I think this new guy sounds ideal - I've never heard of him before yesterday & for that position - that's about the best thing you can hope for...
It pretty much means he made zero mistakes in the past 112 straight games he played

  1. i could see this happening too easily i remeber him not too long ago single handely beating the patriots in miami. he'd boost the pass rush a lot and possibly mentor shawn crable.

  1. I don't know....I think Mike Reiss has spoiled me. Mr. Gasper, you seem to "Reach" or stretch the envelop, as they say....... too often. Guess, I shouldn't blame you, there's just not much going on.
But this article just seems to redundant

  1. I can't believe the word "bromance" got so many people's panties in a bunch.

Posted by Globe Copy Editor March 11, 09 04:45 PM
  1. Evidently money. Like Gaffney, Paxton got a deal he wouldn't have gotten in NE. I think they did well to replace him - at roughly Paxton's old salary - with an experienced guy who's been as consistently good as Paxton for about the same period of time.

Posted by Scott March 11, 09 04:51 PM
  1. Just what we need, another name for two different jerseys. I don't mind having two players on the roster with the same last name as long as it's not Hobbs. (lol)

  1. "Bromance" is funny, come on
I live in DC. my theory is that Taylor didn't agree to the workout clause because it was a graceful & quick way to remove himself from a bad situation. I'm saying this as a Redskins fan. Good players come to Washington because Snyder thinks he is playing fantasy football and signs whatever big names he can get for tons of money, not thinking about the big picture. So you have Portis who is BFF with Snyder and argues openly with the coaches (FWIW I like Portis and the coach is not that good), now you're gonna have Haynesworth making even more $$ and not answerable to anyone. Zorn is not Joe Gibbs in being able to keep the team together. A lot of guys are not given the opportunity to succeed by the franchise. It's the total opposite of New England. at this point I rather see players I like go to the Pats, who I'm also a fan of, than go to the Redskins. Taylor IMHO could not help being injured and played hard when he was able to play. Prognosis for the Redskins is not good for next season & at least a few beyond.

  1. bill loves vets at the line backer position

do this deal, with so many picks we can have a solid vet there to help groom some younger guys we pick up in the draft

how could people disagree, tbc starting or jason taylor? hmmmmm....real hard

  1. Hey D.C. guy I think that you're just jaded from watching that team with the offensive name. JT is a class act all the way and was far and away the most feared and respected player the pats offense faced over the years...also the guy is one of the leagues top humanatarians in terms of charity work (NFL man of the year winner)...try to separate the facts from your bitterness.

  1. NO...NO...NO...

I remember attending a Pat's game against the Washington Redskins many years ago. Billy Kilmer. Sonny Jurgenson. Jack Hamburger. Jason has had his day. He is now football history.

  1. I second Paul's post. No more "bromance," ever.

I like the Taylor pick. One of the best ways to improve a secondary is get a pass rush. It's a lot easier to cover a guy for three seconds than for eight or nine.

Posted by Gooby March 11, 09 06:45 PM
  1. To Jsimp628, I live in the DC area too. I thought Taylor was misused by the Skins and made to play injured. Snyder always overpays for the Messiah, and then the player proves to be only human. If we are just patient, Haynesworth may be available in a year or two. In the interim, this may be a fit for the Patriots. I'm not worried about "selfish" players on a BB team. The specie just doesnt exist.

  1. Zach Thomas didn't sign with the Patriots out of loyalty to Dolphins fans. I wonder if Jason Taylor would be the same way. I mean he's going to go into the Hall of Fame in a Miami Dolphins uniform, so I wonder. Which type of guy he is? Is his loyalty closer to Johnny Damon or to Zach Thomas? Who knows......this guy's head seems more in hollywood these days so nothing would surprise me. He's always expressed admiration for Tom Brady, so who knows.........

  1. Can anyone tell me how old Jason Taylor is currently? Has Jason Taylor had any type of injuries over the years? It also seems like he really does not want to play professional football anymore. The Patriots have several second through fifth round draft picks. With Crable, Bana-Cain, and Woods healthy, why waste the time and money on Mr. Taylor?? The team concept is not to pass rush but to contain with push pressure on the quarterback. Fans seem to be wishing for a big named player on defense. The Patriots have created big names on defense over the past ten years. Let us wait and see who the Patriots draft. We have trusted the Patriot system for years. Why give up on the system now??!? Thanks!

  1. I'd rather have Julius Peppers. At least I am fairly certain he is serious about football.

Posted by Kurt March 12, 09 02:25 PM
  1. I much rather have Julius Peppers he's younger faster and more durable the jason taylor. Peppers wants to be in a 3-4 scheme I would trade a second round pick for him

  1. Tully Banta-Cain is your starting OLB. That guy doesn't get enough respect.

I loved him when he was here - a good young backer who was developing nicely. I'm thrilled to have him back.

Posted by Classless March 12, 09 11:58 PM
  1. Taylor would not be an asset at this point. His outside interests will not work well with team first. Not to mention that for the past 3 years, age has been a factor for the defense. First Round draft pick to a USC Linebacker and let Taylor ride off into the sunset.
