T.O. vs. the Patriots

Posted by Chris Forsberg, Boston.com Staff March 8, 2009 05:00 AM

With Terrell Owens signing a one-year deal with the Bills on Saturday, he joins the AFC East. That means Owens will face the Patriots twice in the 2009 season -– which will nearly match how many times he’s faced the Patriots over his entire 13-year career.

A look at how Owens has fared against New England while playing for 49ers (1996-2003), Eagles (2004-2005) and Cowboys (2006-2008):

  • 2008: no games
  • 2007: 6 catches, 66 yards, TD (in Dallas)
  • 2006: no games
  • 2005: no games
  • 2004: 9 catches, 122 yards (Super Bowl, in Jacksonville)
  • 2003: no games
  • 2002: no games
  • 2001: no games
  • 2000: no games
  • 1999: no games
  • 1998: 3 catches, 61 yards, TD (in Foxborough)
  • 1997: no games
  • 1996: no games

  1. Newly signed CB Shawn Springs SHUTDOWN T.O. last year when he covered him in the first game (Redskins vs Dallas). Kept him to 2 catches for 11 yards, 0 TDs. He is knows to play well against bigger receivers (he is 6' 0").

  1. The main difference I see in the past games (at least those in recent years) is that the Pats secondary was better in any of those years than it was last year. This really puts the pressure on for the Pats to bring in someone good to put on Owens. Maybe we are talking upping our offer to Leigh Bodden or someone else. That being said Springs faced him many times over the last few years as and Eagle and Cowboy so maybe he's the guy.

  1. Can't wait to see our jerk-crap secondary trying to cover him.

  1. that does seem sort of strange. I know Owens has spent his time in the NFC but still, only 3 games against the Patriots in his entire 12 year career, interesting.

  1. On a one year deal this is a decent gamble for both sides. The Bills had to make something happen in the FA market. Their offense couldn't possibly get any worse than it was last year. The problem for them will be finding ways to get TO the ball. They have to change up their conservative, run-first approach. With a one year deal, though, Owens may just behave since he knows he could line himself up for another big deal in the uncapped year in 2010.

  1. I can't wait for Red Sox season, so tools like 'gick' find something better to complain about.

  1. It should be a good fit for Buffalo - T.O. loves mediocre QB platoons and I'm sure he'll be very supportive as they try to get their offense figured out.

  1. Great news for the Patriots. I do feel sorry for Trent Edwards. And Dick Jauron does not have the personality to deal with this princess. It makes hating the Bills fun again too.

  1. The best way to neutralize a receiver like TO is to get to the QB quickly.

    Cheers,

  1. who is going to throw TO the ball? Edwards yeah right. If thats the case I feel safe putting Troy Brown in there to cover TO

  1. Ericnh - you nailed it on Springs. I'm down in Washington and I can tell you I thought releasing Springs in favor of Hall was a terrible decision for the Redskins. He single handedly helped them win that game against Dallas last year and he's bringing an element that was essentially lost on the Pats last season (pressuring a receiver at the line). Don't expect a lot of numbers from him, just expect Qb's not the throw his way. T.O. is going to have to ride this season out because he's not going to enjoy playing with Edwards.

  1. Good for the Bills. That franchise has been a joke that everyone surrounding them has just had to feel sorry for. How do you not feel bad for a team that goes to the SB four times in a row and loses all of them? It's pretty laughable.

  1. jam him at the line of scrimmage. he will fail get frustrated and give up on his routes. any coach with half a brain will do that.

How soon we forget. Here's the Pats record for the years the Bills went to the Super Bowl: 1-15. 6-10. 2-14. 5-11.

We were laughable. The Bills, 4 SB losses or not, were pretty freakin' incredible.

  1. Oh this is gonna be good. TO infects contenders SF, Philly, and Dallas, now his latest host is the ever confused Buffalo Bills? Let the Dick Jauron suicide watch begin.

The TO signing is sadly typical for the Bills, for example drafting a QB (Losman) that by his own admission "had never played in snow before" (Dec, 2005 past game Pats win @Bills).

This guarantees another usual Bills season: early contenders, late folders.

  1. I'm no T.O. fan, but jamming him at the line will result in getting your corner tossed aside and he'll catch pass after pass.
No corner matches up physically with him.

  1. Wonder how T.O. will do in the Buffalo Tundra season that starts in November?

40 MPH winds and 20 degree temps I think will be a large problem for Mr Popcorn, not to mention the sleet and snow..

  1. At least the Buffalo games will be mildly interesting now. How many have they lost in a row to the Patriots?

That may have been true in years past, but no longer valid. T.O. no longer wins those battles on a consistent basis and he definitely doesn't like being smacked around. You HAVE to whack him these days...he'll just go off and pout.
