Another mock at 23

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff April 24, 2009 05:00 AM

For the fourth straight year, Casey Pearce of the San Diego Chargers website has put together a writers' mock draft. The draft has been posted at chargers.com, and Pearce called when the Patriots were on the clock.

This was what the board looked like:

  • 1) Lions -- QB Matthew Stafford
  • 2) Rams -- OT Eugene Monroe
  • 3) Chiefs -- OT Jason Smith
  • 4) Seahawks -- WR Michael Crabtree
  • 5) Browns -- QB Mark Sanchez
  • 6) Bengals -- LB Aaron Curry
  • 7) Raiders -- DT B.J. Raji
  • 8) Jaguars -- WR Jeremy Maclin
  • 9) Packers -- OT Michael Oher
  • 10) 49ers -- OT Andre Smith
  • 11) Bills -- OLB Brian Orakpo
  • 12) Broncos -- DE Tyson Jackson
  • 13) Redskins -- LB Rey Maualuga
  • 14) Saints -- DB Malcolm Jenkins
  • 15) Texans -- LB Clay Matthews
  • 16) Chargers -- RB Knowshon Moreno
  • 17) Jets -- WR Darrius Hayward-Bey
  • 18) Broncos -- DT Ron Brace
  • 19) Buccaneers -- DE Everette Brown
  • 20) Lions -- DE Robert Ayers
  • 21) Eagles -- TE Brandon Pettigrew
  • 22) Vikings -- WR Percy Harvin
  • 23) Patriots --

In this scenario, I was deciding between ILB Brian Cushing, OLB Larry English, CB Darius Butler and DL Ziggy Hood. I ended up going with English, focusing on the pass rush.

    1. Nice pick Mike, other than Ayers I think English is worth the 23rd pick. Hood maybe a pass rushing Defensive End a potential replacement for any DLineman that we might lose next offseason.

    1. I know there are questions about his size, but if Everett Brown falss that far do you see the pats trading up to get him. He is great at getting to the qb and would be a solid player for years under Bill Belicheck

    1. Awful choice. This draft is studded with OLB types, and very good ones could be found at #34 or #47. English will still be there at #34 if not #40, if he isn't you have Sintim who is a better fit for the Pats, and could also play ILB. Why not go after more difficult to obtain positions such as:
DL, OT, CB ? If this mock is correct (it can't be, Brace is laughable at #18 for one thing) then Butler is the guy to take since the elite OT's are picked over, and Pettigrew is gone.Hood is a 1 gap player that could be converted, not sure I want to take such a risk when we could draft a no brainer, starting quality type CB instead. No ILB outside of Curry or Rey this year is a value at #23. No.

    1. In this scenario, I would take Butler, because after him, the cornerback talent drop a lot and there are no chances Butler can drop in the second round.

English seems really good, but he could sleep in the early 2nd round, if not, we should select another good OLB (Sintim, Barwin). Maybe English is a better player than Butler (as least as good as Bulter), but because the talent is not the same between the CB and the OLB, I would try to fill the two holes with both elite players.

    1. Good pick. Mike, do you think the pats would/should trade back into the first round to get a player they like? Considering the 'phins choose 2 picks after the Pats do? When looking at both teams needs, it looks like they both have simliar needs on both sides of the ball.

    1. Get Darius Butler!

    1. Aaron Curry at 6? I don't think so... Also would the pats consider trading up as high as 10 if Andre "the Giant" Smith fell that far? Mike, I know you mentioned the limit for a move up to be the 12th pick, but with a player like Smith or Orakpo available, could it be concievable to go as high as tenth?

    1. I can't see the browns picking a qb with the 5th pick... well some teams really deserve the record they finish with.
The draft changes so much by one team picking something no one expects.

    1. 1. Ebben Britton - OT
      2. Larry English - DE
      2b. D.J. Moore CB/WR/Return
      2C. Trade for #2 in 2010 and #3 in 2009
      3a. James Casey - TE/FB
      3b. Scott McKillop ILB
      3c. Trade new pick and #6 for #2 2010
      4. Mitch King - DL
      5. Dillard - WR
      6. J. Johnson RB
      7. B. Toal ILB/FB/Special Teams

This draft gives the pats flexability to trade Kazur or replace him after 2009. We get a nickle corner this year in moore who is also a great special teamer. McKillop is super productive - reminds me of Zach Thomas. Mitch King is just a beast. Not the second coming of Klecko - this guy knows how to play. Dillard had 18td's for Rice last year. J. Johnson could be productive as a Faulk type RB and Brian Toal may be a Larry Izzo.

    1. I agree with David Laflamme...

Darius Butler, the CB should be the pick. The Pats can not allow another season to happen with the prospect of Ellis Hobbs out there on the corner. Even with the two free agents and the two rookies from last season, this is a poition that needs a huge input.

As David said, there will still be a solid LB available with that early 2nd round pick.

    1. P4747, 3c is untradeable because it is compensation. Thanks for your detailed suggestion/prediction though.

    1. Of the guys you were targeting, Mike, I would have gone with Butler over English there. I also don't get where this groundswell of support for Eben Britton has come from. This team does not need another OT with marginal feet and short arms that will struggle against NFL speed rushers. Of the top tier tackle prospects, he has by far the heaviest feet despite being athletic, and some of the shortest arms. These are two of the biggest red flags as far as physical tools go for a left tackle. Some examples of recent guys (there aren't many) who were high picks that had arm lengths (sub 33") similar to Britton: Robert Gallery, Mike Williams, Jeff Backus, Chris Williams and Sam Baker. Not exactly a murderer's row of blocking talent, there. Baker is the only one who has looked good in his career, and he was asked to run block far more than pass protect, where arm length isn't nearly as crucial. Britton is a fantastic technician and hard worker by all accounts, and I've seen him maul guys in the running game, but that screams right tackle to me, which isn't a position you draft in the first round, I think.

    1. Just read on Peter King in SI that the Pats offered number 23 and number 47 to Jacksonville in order to move up to number 8 overall. My guess is they would be targeting either Andre Smith or Tyson Jackson...
