Draft reset
The Patriots entered the 2009 NFL Draft with 11 picks and -- as could probably be expected -- were active in draft-day trades to move around the board. Here's a look at where the Patriots stand after Day 1 (deals in parentheses are picks traded away; full trade details at the bottom of this entry).

Pretty clear that LB wasn't their top priority, picking in the last 3rd of the 1st round. I'm looking forward to seeing the new DB's play! I'm also pretty surprised that trading out of the first round didn't land any 2010 picks.
What the ??? The Pats seemed make the very fair trade with Ravens and then another with the Packers. You arent supose to make "fair" trades when teams are desperate to move up, you should take them for more than what you give. Just like what Oakland did to them when they moved up 7 spots in the 2nd round. Very disappointed by this draft, Chung was a stretch and Maualuga was there still as a steal. No Problem with Butler and Brace, though I feel that they could have gotten both still by staying at pick 47, giving up 3 picks for 1 to move 7 spots is steep. Vollmer probably would have still been available in rounds 4 or 5. WR Tate or TE Coffman would have been a better pick.
What about Gisele?
Please contract BB tonight and make sure he doesn't make any further moves in this draft without consulting you, professor.
What's clear is that they didn't think the USC 'backers were a fit. Unlikely that they will trade many of the late round picks, so I'm guessing that BB&Co. will stock up on long shots and hope that there is a gem (like Gisele's hubby) hidden there somewhere.
I was really hoping they would get one of those linebackers available late in the first round... Chung definitely looks like a reach for the first draft pick taken this year. Furthermore, I really think that Gilbert kid out of SDSU would have been a nice late 2nd round pick rather than the OL they got. I think he would have certainly still been on the board tomorrow, but i doubt Gilbert will be around for our first pick in the 3rd round since he is the top rated player left over from day 1. A little disappointed, but we'll see how they turn out. Need a really good 3rd Round... tons of picks.
I love what the Pats did today. First, they don't want to pay big money for a first round pick when all the talent in the draft is in the second and third rounds. Second, they got rid of four of their garbage picks in the 4th, 5th, and 6th rounds, which now leaves them with their two compensatory picks, which they can't trade, and their last assigned pick in the 7th round. Its beautiful how well orchestrated this draft has been so far by New England. It's Mastery at its finest.
There's much in that war room that we are not privy to. I would just like to be able to sit in and see the action. We/ve done well with past selections on draft day so far, so my bet is this year will be no different.
I Trust in Bill!
I believe most comments after last years draft was what a reach "Mayo" was so early in the first round. Kudo's to #9 I trust in Bill!
So, are we now to believe that a back-up rookie safety (Chung) is equal to a starting NFL Quarterback worthy of a new multi-million dollar contract (Cassel), and an outside starting linebacker (Vrabel) who was one year removed from the Pro Bowl and provided the only semblance of a pass rush?
give the kids a break you didn;t become an over nite sucess right away rember they just got done with college ball good job bill
I really don't understand why they have not addressed their need at linebacker. They traded Mike Vrabel, Teddy Bruschi is not getting any younger, and they passed on three quality linebackers to take a free safety. Can someone please explain that to me.
Good draft so far. Couple observations:
1. I think SD taking Larry English and Lions taking Pettigrew and Broncos taking Ayers were the players NE would have taken with #23 .. since they were gone, it was great move to trade into second round and THREE #2's now for 2010.
2. Also think they would have LOVED Eugene Chung at #8 from Jacksonville.
3. Through Round 3 the only postion still a need is OG. The 6'7" tackle they got is not a OG in Pats system. Passing on OLD Gilbert is querstioable. TE/OG next!
This is the most effective franchise of the century. The owner, coach and quarterback are on the same focused page. They draft for a certain combination of spirit, intelligence, versatility, strength and determination. Bob Sanders has most recently pointed out that a Safety can be the heart, backbone and spear point of a great defense. This draft will brace their defense with a level of depth they've needed for the past two years. Brilliant - not only because of the track record but also because of the stockpiling of 2nd - 4th round picks where the most cost effective players are.
The pats are awsome! Mr. belichick's decisions are always sound and safe with good reasoning. There might be a few questions about some positions that were not addressed like where's our pass rushing lb,but the off season isn't over yet, the draft just is.By the time pre-season arrives every thing will be on point. he should join obama and help with the economy and reduce the budget!
