Globe 10.0: Best and worst picks of Belichick era
In today's episode of Globe 10.0, Bob Ryan and Mike Reiss debate the Patriots' best and worst draft picks of the Bill Belichick era. Below, you can vote for your choices ...

Matt light got my vote too. No dynasty or dominating offence cannot be build with no LT. Arrival of Light, brady and seymour started the whole think.
Worst pick....
As much as Maroney has been a disappointment, from the an objective standpoint at the time he seemed to be a great pick. Jackson on the other hand had so many question marks. Amazing speech but an awful work ethic and some behavioral troubles. At least Bethel could return a kick, just couldn't catch a pass.
about the writers mock draft , my thought is clear and one that has a great chance of playing out. At this position we may want to drop back a slot or two to get another two for next year. And those whom understand the pats will agree it will happen at one point and why not here. I would trade this pick and then two or three spots later pick up Larry English, Brian Cushing and more importantly Donald Brown the runner out of UConn as he is amazing. Don't forget we have a knack for getting what we want in the first round and we could maximize this draft by trading back a bit.!!!
Best pick besides Brady would be Matt Cassel pending what they do with the second round pick they got from KC. Converting a seventh round pick who never played in college into a second round draft pick at #34 is pure genius.
Worst pick would be Chad Jackson. Everyone salivated over his speed but overlooked the fact that in the Gator offense, all you have to do is outrun the coverage which Jackson could do in college easily. Not so in the pros and his route running and discipline in taking care of himself left a lot to be desired. Wasted athletic gifts.
My 23rd overall pick would be Brian Cushings USC
I actually thought Adrian Klemm was the worst pick, but he wasn't an option.
How can you even put David Thomas on the worst list. Who ever came up with that should go back to writing obituaries.
Putting Thomas on the worst list...but not Watson? Watson went in the 1st versus the third (much higher expectations) and hasn't lived up to it. It seems like the ball sails through his hands every time he tries to catch a pass in the back of the end zone, and other times it just hits him in the chest and bounces to the ground. He has potential, but he's been a bum so far.
That said, Watson is still way better than Chad Jackson. Jackson got my vote...just saying Watson should have been there over Thomas.
I agree with David; Adrian Klemm.
Chad Jackson is the worst because Green Bay got Greg Jennings with the pick the Patriots sent to them for Chad Jackson
The worst pick by far was Bethel Johnson. He could return, but he's the worst because the Pats could have had Anquan Bolden instead. Imagine Belichik using his versatilty...huh? I mean, come on...
worst pick - adrian klemm.
Best pick - easy, Koppen. Probowl center, one of the best in the NFL every season - with a 5th round pick. Cassel turned into a 2nd rounder. Even so, that second rounder would need to be a probowl player and solid starter from day 1 to match Koppen. Asante was great when he left, but average at best when he started. He was a huge risk in the secondary for the first year or two, got eaten up against the Panthers in the superbowl. Koppen has been solid from day 1, he's very underrated.
Worst pick, Jackson, he did nothing. Bethel was a huge part of a superbowl team; we beat Indy in the dome because of him, he caught a TD in the Tennesee playoff game. He was never a good reciever, but he was very good as a return man.
The worst pick was clearly Ben Watson [1]. His key drops have killed us and he was a top choice.
Ok, this is going to seem a bit unorthodox, but I think David Givens deserves to be higher on this poll. For a guy that was able to tie the record for consecutive playoff games with at least one TD, he is getting way too little credit. He was a big part of the Patriots playoff contention in the first half of the decade. In fact, he was the only receiver (not counting Mike Vrabel) to score a TD in both the 2003 and 2004 Super Bowls, which the Pats only won by 3 points a piece. Sure, it's a team game, but Givens contributions in the playoffs were huge
i agree with mitch. i always though givens was better than branch. samuel is the best though with koppen 2nd. its a shame givens blew his knee out with the titans.
Cassel plays one season and does a rather mediocre job, but he's third in the running so far? Mat t Light has fewer than half as many votes despite being the uncontested starter for 8 years (and counting)? I recognize that Light was chosen in the 2nd round whereas Cassel was chosen in the 7th, but even so, their relative contributions to the team would be like comparing Donte Stallworth to Troy Brown.
Matt Cassel was easily the best pick. Though I am basing this on the team's ability to find talent like that in the 7th round and not so much how he's performed since it's only been one year.
As far as worst, it's CJ. The worst part about that pick was they had to trade up to get him.
I think fans totally overrate Asante Samuel. The Patriots have YET to replace Ty Law and as far as I can see, cornerback has been a serious defensive weakness since Law left.
What about that Wisconsin receiver? Was he part of the BB busts? Another track star that really couldn't catch. Bethel Johnson was the worst.
I still say people overrate Samuel.
What about Eugene Chung? Oh wait that wasn't Belichick. Jackson seems to be a no-brainer. I just donated my #17 Jackson jersey to goodwill last week.
How many huge INTs did Samuel have? Yes he's soft and yes he gambled a lot but that's what made him great. This is unpopular but I think Light is overrated and is near the end. He got toasted so many times during that traumatic super bowl and got used a few times last year too . . .
Chad Jackson is the worst pick because Green Bay got Greg Jennings with the Patriots pick and got from us a starting offensive lineman with the additional third round pick we gave them in the trade to move up- Jason Spitz. Packers got 2 starters, one close to all -pro level, we got nothing. It's a mini-Kevin McHale and Robert Parish for Joe Barry Carroll in reverse. Let's hope we do a lot better tomorrow, I think we will.
The best pick of the Belichick era was when Bob Kraft picked Belichick. It takes a picker to know a picker. Bob and Bill more Super Bowls in the future. Money and brains are tough to beat.
ASANTE SAMUAL WAS THE BEST PICK BESIDES TOM BRADY HE LEAD ALMOST EVERY YEAR IN INTERCEPTIONS, INTERCEPTIONS RETURNED FOR TOUNCHDOWN, LEADS ALL TIME IN INTERCEPTION IN THE PLAYOFFS SO ASANTE SAMUAL GETS MY VOTE FOR BEST PICK BESIDE BRADY
The best is Matt Light his work ethic, strength and determination are irreplacable. Next would be Cassel he came through in a crunch was not a top draft pick and did not cost the Pats much money. We are getting a good pick this year in return for his trade to KC.
The biggest disappointment for me is Maroney he has never been a productive power RB and he lacks speed. Very over paid for what he has produced. I wish Dillon would have been healthy enough to stay on another season. Maroney is no Dillon!!!
My worst pick is Maroney, he has not lived up to the 1st round hype that a first rounder lives up to, instead he has been constantly sidelined with injuries, each and every year. Yeah he has his glowing moments, but not in the big games. I feel he is over-rated and could be dealt away soon.
All the second rounders.
Adrian Klemm
Marquise Hill
Chad Jackson
Bethel Johnson
Throwing in First Rounder Ben Watson and Muroney is good too. Their drafting is uneven to say the least.
As much as I like Matt Light I cringe when I see him get beat, and I seem to be cringing a lot the past few years.
Ok, where to start? First, Is Maroney really a bust? I consider a bust someone who sucks (or lacks the skills to play in the NFL). It's obvious when Maroney is healthy and playing that he can play, so it's not like he sucks. For the bust, I chose Jackson. At least Bethel could return kicks. Jackson just sucked. And besides his big bonehead play last year, I like Dave Thomas. I wish he would be used more in the passing game. I agree Watson is more of a bust than Thomas, easily.
For the best pick on that list, I agree with the consensus pick of Samuel. Once he blossomed, he was one of the best DB's in the NFL. That's a great value with a 4th round pick. Same could be said for Koppen. Light was a 2nd round pick and even though he's generally solid, he does have some games where he just gets schooled. Givens belongs at the bottom of the list. He was just an average WR who just happened to catch TD's in the playoffs. Cassel, look he did very good this year, especially for a 7th round draft pick, but I still think he outperformed his real value. We'll see the 'real' Cassel next year in K.C. (Too bad too, cause for whatever twisted reason, I kinda liked what little I saw of Croyle and Thigpen).
