John Madden retires

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff April 16, 2009 10:45 AM

NBC Sports Chairman Dick Ebersol announced today that John Madden has retired from broadcasting.

Although the news is not Patriots-specific, the thought here is that football fans visiting this site might be interested.

As part of NBC's press release, Madden issued the following statement:

"It's time. I'm 73 years old. My 50th wedding anniversary is this fall. I have two great sons and their families and my five grandchildren are at an age now when they know when I'm home and, more importantly, when I'm not... "It's been such a great ride... the NFL has been my life for more than 40 years, it has been my passion – it still is. I appreciate all of the people who are and were such an important part of the most enjoyable, most fun anyone could have... that great life with the teams, the players, the coaches, the owners, the League... my broadcasting partners Pat and Al... the production people and the fans...is still great... it's still fun and that's what it makes it hard and that's why it took me a few months to make a decision. I still love every part of it – the travel, the practices, the game film, the games, seeing old friends and meeting new people... but I know this is the right time."

  1. I hope this means that Collinsworth will be freed from the NBC Studio to do the national games . . .

  1. Thank God - I've been waiting for this news for about 6-7 years....

  1. Thank god. About 5 years too late, but better late than never.

  1. He was an easy target for people to make fun of, but he was very good at analyzing a game. In the last few years he stopped doing a lot of his goofy "BAM" things and focused more on breaking down the game. Most people never paid attention to that and just continued to hack on him for his annoying voice and past antics with chart drawing and such. He was a great link from NFL's past to its present. He will be missed. Long live Madden!

  1. John Madden had no reason for football if Brett Favre wasn't going part of it anymore.

  1. Funny how Madden retires as soon as Favre is pretty much done.

  1. Madden was a goof, but he was a part of the NFL, from those Raiders championships to the Thanksgiving terducken. I wish him well and thank him for his role in the history of the league.

  1. I do not like his EA sports playstation games and I never liked him as a broadcaster. Even in the Pat Summerall Days....Always stating the obvious.....

    Oh Well...have a great retirement...you need it...

Bamm!! Put some tough acting tinactin on that career...and its over!

  1. I always liked him, he was like that loud obnoxious uncle that made a lots of noise and would occasionally have a nugget of wisdom.

Plus he was quite the looker, if that face doesn't scream Offensive Lineman nothing does.

  1. Always hated him, Let's never forget that he coached that piece of garbage Tatum, I know he & Stingley were close after, but from my end I will never forgive the Raiders, Tatum, & Madden. I wish them all the worst.

  1. There's someone who stayed beyond his relevance by about a decade.

I do like Chris Collinsworth, I think he provides good insight and is not afraid to say something was dumb. I also liked Jerry Glanville for consistently giving a coach perspective, enough to get beyond the old southern boy accent.

Now let's appreciate Gil Santos and bid him farewell too, Gino bails Gil out of dozens of mistakes per game.

  1. I love this guy and will miss him. In my humble opinion he is the best sportscaster of all time.

  1. That's strange...most true football fans know that his critical thinking skills and inner monologue retired years ago.

  1. Hallelujah!

  1. Sorry to disagree with all of you but I thought he was awesome. He livened things up and was honest to a fault which makes him human unlike most sportscasters these days. I like Chris Collinsworth but he's more machine than a human being, spewing stats all over the place even when they don't need to be. I'm not old (37) but we've lost a few guys on both sides of the border that delivered news and sports for my entire lifetime and that's not a loss that should be mocked.

Great career for a good man.

  1. How you people could hate on Madden is beyond me. Appreciate the game and the ones who helped make it what it is today.

A very long, solid career; best wishes.

  1. I don't hate Madden, I just hated listening to him for the past 5 years or so. I don't wish harm to the guy or anything, I'm just not to upset to see him go. He stayed past his prime. It was time (years ago) for him to move on.

  1. Agreed, Sean. After devolving into foolishness at the midpoint of his career he rededicated himself in recent years and was returning to his old form, something apparently lost on some of the "real football fans" above. He's contributed to the popularity of the NFL in so many ways. I hope he enjoys a long and healthy retirement.

  1. I agree, all the flak he gets from people just isn't fair. Maybe he's way over the hill but he's contributed alot to the game, made it more popular and widespread. Retirement is well deserved.

  1. The teacher of the pupil that basically cost Dayrl Stingley his life famous words wereI think the Patriots should play it out and go into overtime against the Rams Good riddance ahole

  1. Yeah, it's time alright. I know he has great football knowledge (I mean that sincerely) and there is great nostalgia surrounding him, but he's a relic, who's time has come. Madden's contributions to the game should be recognized appropriately, though.

  1. He's still gonna do Tough-actin' Tinactin commercials, right?

  1. Don't feel bad for being critical of Madden- he didn't die or anything. The fact is, he co-held the top job in NFL broadcasting when he shouldn't have been. A novice could analyze the game better than he did. There's a reason Frank Caliendo poked fun at him for always stating the obvious! I understand his place in history, but I have higher expectations of someone in his position.

  1. I had the true displeasure of walking by this piece of crap at the 2005 opening game coming down from the club seats at Gillette. No true Patriots fan should give this guy any praise . In the last 31 years the only thing any of us could hope for would be having his Madden Cruiser overturning, and him suffering the same fate as poor Daryl Stingley. Yeah he was a true American hero presiding over a locker room of thugs, steroid , coke, and alcohol scum bags . A gift 1976 championship to boot. It makes me sick to hear all the praises of this clown.

  1. I don't know what game he was covering but it certainly wasn't the one that was being broadcast. I echo the common sentiment.....Thank God!

  1. "I think that the Patriots should run out the clock and go into overtime"
