Patriots acquire TE Smith from Buccaneers
The Patriots acquired veteran tight end Alex Smith from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers today in exchange for an undisclosed selection in the 2010 NFL Draft, the team announced today.
From the team-issued press release:
Smith, 26, is a veteran of four NFL seasons with the Buccaneers (2005-08). The 6-foot-4-inch, 258-pound tight end was selected by Tampa Bay in the third round (71st overall) of the 2005 NFL Draft out of Stanford. In four seasons with Tampa Bay, Smith played in 58 games with 43 starts and caught 129 passes for 1,252 yards (9.7 avg.) and 11 touchdowns. Last season, Smith played in 14 games with 12 starts and caught 21 passes for 250 yards (11.9 avg.) and three touchdowns. As a rookie in 2005, Smith finished second on the team with a career-high 41 receptions for 367 yards (9.0 avg.) and two touchdowns while playing in all 16 games with 10 starts. His 41 receptions led all NFL rookie tight ends that season and ranked third among all league rookies, while standing as the highest reception total by a Tampa Bay tight end in 10 years. As a blocker in 2005, Smith helped open holes for running back Carnell “Cadillac” Williams, who had six 100-yard games and won the NFL Rookie of the Year award. In 2006, Smith played in 14 games with seven starts and finished third on the team with 35 catches for 250 yards (7.1 avg.) and three touchdowns. In 2007, Smith started all 14 games in which he played and finished fourth on the team with 32 receptions for a career-high 385 yards (12.0 avg.) and three touchdowns.

Looks like a nice pick-up. Who do you think gets released? Getting crowded at TE.
wow, that means Watson or Thomas is not going to be on the roster come september. This kid was hyped coming out, lets hope he can play, it must light a fire in Watson and Thomas.
Bye Bye Ben Watson or David Thomas.
This is a good solid movel Smith's stats speak for themselves. One can only imagine what he will do with a Quaterback like Tom Brady throwing to him. When I was in Tampa, it was well established that Alex Smith can open solid running lanes. This is the pick we have needed to put some more reliable variety in our offensives schemes as Watson has just not gotten it done of late. I expect this guy to beat Watson out for the lead TE spot, but you can never tell as Watson has not had solid competition for his position, and may rise to the occasion. Either way its all good
how many tight ends on patroits on the pats roster as now?
Better than any TE's in the draft. Although he is no Dustin Keller, a decent pick up.
Dont underestimate Belechick. And dont be surprised if this Alex Smith also gets cut before camp ends. Hes cut guys he has brought in before in the past. Nothing new.
Watson is too slow and too small. He is going to be blown-out.
Why did Tampa Bay trade him ?
It's an outrage still that the Pats passed on TE Jeff Moy out of Burlington High School all those years back. Out-rage.
Nice pickup, should be quite a competitive camp for TE. Baker & Smith both better blockers than Watson/Thomas. I think Thomas is the odd man out. Watson is one of the fastest TE's(chasing down champ bailey in playoffs) is perfect example but needs to upgrade blocking. Also Watson & Thomas" contracts are both up after this season. Way to go BB.
Say, "Goodbye" to Thomas--I hope. I haven't forgiven him yet for losing us a game last year with a late hit...
Tampa continues roster purge. Say hello to 4-12. Great move for New England. Watson probably goes as he has been less than effective of late.
Watson will be cut never lived up to expectations,
The Pats passed on Jeff Moy (the TE from Burlington High School) because their program is complete garbage, which starts with the team and ends with the town itself. Please, Jeff didn't have the toughness in him. That is why he was nicknamed Jeff "Boy Toy" Moy in HS.
Jeff "Boy Toy" is a tight end or has a tight end?
Yeah, I remember Jeff Moy too! He used to get tossed around the field like a friggin' ragdoll. That guy had the hands of a club-fisted midget, and the next block he throws will be his first.....
Have people already forgotten about Baker as well?? There's your starting competition! Smith and Baker are going to double-team the entire league!
Baker + Smith = Serious Double Team Action
hey EricNH are you serious??....Watson is too slow??...what are u kidding me...you realize he is considered the 2nd fastest TE in the NFL ...now i'm not saying he has lived up to any expectations or that he is good or bad....just talking speed here...so to make such an ignorant comment like that really shows that you have no idea what your talking about
Watson would be even faster if he did not get bogged down by his stone hands
Wasn't it Watson who chased down Champ Bailey a few seaons ago from the opposite end of the end zone? Slow he is not.....
PATS SHOULD TRADE BEN WATSON FOR KOREY STRINGER AND PAT TILLMAN STRAIGHT UP.
PATS MISSED OUT ON jj arington that boy can punt pass kick and run da ball. you see him in da super bowl. that boys got moves. that mr beleichick once again missed out on an all pro RB. just like he did on that tatum bell.
Watson has value - look for a trade, hes not delivering the consistent pass catching ability or blocking that Smith can. Thomas, will be the back up. Smith will do really well in New England
This is brilliant move by bb. Bucs let him go because they got LJ Smith form Philly I beleive. I live in Philly and let me tell you Alex will be better w/ TB than LJ will be with any one at QB. Creates comp. in TE position. They now have four goods ones, one will get released. Let the competition begin. My guess is Thomas goes, but who knows. Let them foght it out, like BB planned it. I like it, any way you slice it. And also, moron who said Watson is slow should not post again!! WTF?
"Watson is too slow and too small. He is going to be blown-out."
Huh???
Bucs let him go because they resigned Jeramy Stevens and traded for Kellen Winslow prior to the draft. They also have Gilmore on the roster. I am sorry to see Alex Smith go. He is a very smart player and a good community guy. He doesn't get the team in trouble during the week and he plays on Sunday. I am Bucs guy but I will be watching the Pats more closely as they have added not only Smith but also Joey Galloway. I don't know what my team is doing other than cutting payroll...but they no longer have a waiting list for season tickets and they are offering partial season ticket packages to attract new fans. Not a good year to look forward too I am afraid.
