Patriots' new player rep steps in at key time

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff April 5, 2009 07:15 AM

Linebacker Mike Vrabel was the Patriots' longtime player representative. With Vrabel traded to the Kansas City Chiefs, offensive tackle Matt Light will take over those duties in New England.

In the Boston Globe Sunday Football Notes, Light talks about his new role at a crucial time in the NFL, as owners and players work toward labor peace over the next 10 months.

"It wasn't until my third or fourth year that I really started thinking about the union and how the business of the NFL operates," Light said. "I think it's like that for a lot of guys - you come into the league and I think you're pretty bogged down with being a rookie, and you're probably still trying to figure it out in your second year. Once you get past that, for me, I wanted to start learning more and try to help out in any way I could."

  1. I notice in that piece that it's mentioned that "Bill Belichick's presence at the University of Connecticut Pro Day last week was duly noted in one NFL office, and that club wouldn't be surprised if cornerback Darius Butler is strongly considered with New England's 23d pick". I said in your initial entry on Belichick that I consider Butler the top CB prospect in the entire draft, so this doesn't surprise me a bit. While I'd prefer Gilbert at 23 and Butler at 34, I'll be more than happy to see the Pats snag Butler at any point in the draft. In Belichick's defense, he'll be a top 5 corner in the league.

  1. It is good to see Matt Light concentrate on something else other than dancing around like an idiot on those life water commercials.

So what is wrong with Light dancing and showing his athletic abilities for a 315lb guy? Most guys can't do that even if half that size. So are you jellos or intimidated? Or maybe you just not in touch with your Feminine side, or then again maybe you are!

  1. First of all Iggy, year in and year out I watch Light get destroyed by speed rushers for example Jason Taylor. I want him to concentrate on football not dancing. Seems like you are more of a fan of Dancing with the Stars than the Patriots. A true football fan wants their teams o-line to watch film and get ready for the upcoming season.

  1. "jellos"? Did you mean jealous? Iguide, you'd better stop watching TV and pick a dictionary once in a while.

  1. Hey Carl, lighten up! It's nice to see an o-lineman getting in on some of the advertising gravy for once. And you say that Matt has been getting beat consistantly by speed rushers for years and years? Try watching the games, not the other teams' highlight reels. Here's some more startling information for you: Tom Brady actually throws an incomplete pass from time to time. Let's run him off the team!!

  1. Type your comment here...how can you cømplain about light when we keep a bum like maroney? It would hurt me alot less seeing light leave than vrable though. John

  1. Anyone who wants to keep Vrabel is retarded this is his like 15th season we need a younger pats team. The only good trades were making are for older players like Fred Taylor from the jaguars and Joey Galloway from the Buccaneers.
