Patriots to host LB Jason Williams on pre-draft visit

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff April 3, 2009 08:25 PM

The Patriots are scheduled to host Western Illinois linebacker Jason Williams on a pre-draft visit at Gillette Stadium, the Globe confirmed tonight.

Williams' visit was initially reported by Brad Biggs of the Chicago Sun-Times.

Williams is scheduled for 10 pre-draft visits, as teams work to gather more information on him because he wasn't invited to the NFL Combine. At 6-foot-1, 242 pounds, he'd project to inside linebacker in the Patriots' base 3-4 defense.

Williams' stock began to rise after an impressive 40-yard dash at Northwestern's Pro Day in March.

  1. Ironically enough, this is Rodney's old school.

Has anyone else noticed that Jason Williams' scouting report is almost identical to Mayo's report last year? They're both extremely good in coverage, very fast for their position (4.5 or better), and physical against the run. Oh, and scouts think they both need improvement on taking on guards and stacking and shedding. Worked out pretty well for Mayo, don't you think?

Jason Wiliams has twice as many career tackles for a loss (47), and 15 sacks as a linebacker. What's most impressive to me is his 12 passes broken up and interception. He's a true three-down linebacker. Oh, and he's actually AHEAD of Mayo in every category measured at the combine/pro day, yet didn't receive a combine invite, and is only projected in the 3rd or 4th round, so he's playing with a chip on his shoulder.

Hm . . . sounds like a steal in the late 2nd or early 3rd. I hope he's a future Patriots, manning the middle with Mayo for the next decade.

  1. DOESN'T HAVE ENOUGH "BEEF" FOR THE NFL???? AND TOO SHORT ALSO FOR A MIDDLE LINEBACKER??? AND, HE HASN'T COMPETED AGAINST THE "BIG BOYS", THE 3 FROM USC HAVE, OR THE OHIO STATE LB STAR, THE GUY FROM NORTHERN ILLINOIS AND/OR THE ONE FROM CINCI.
I CAN SEE BB GOING FOR HIM AT MAYBE 6 0R 7?? AFTER AN LB STUD IN ROUND 1, A CB, SS AND A FS WITH THE 3 2ND ROUND PICKS
