Patriots trade picks acquired for Hobbs

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff April 26, 2009 01:40 PM

The Patriots quickly turned around and traded the two fifth-round draft choices they acquired in the trade for Ellis Hobbs.

The team shipped picks 137 and 141 to Baltimore for picks 123 and 198 (sixth round).

With the 123rd selection, the Patriots selected Penn State offensive lineman Rich Ohrnberger.

  1. Ellis Hobbs for an undersized O Linemen?

  1. From Dan Pompeii who had him as 8th best guard

    8. Richard Ohrnberger, Penn State

This is a tough blocker who is good in a phone booth. But he lacks ideal power and size at 6-2, 297, and he could be overwhelmed by bigger defenders. He also can be considered at center.

    Might be insurance for Mankins

  1. Today's moves give us the foundation for a really good CFL team.

  1. They must have really liked this guy. Also the Hobbs trade takes off 2.5 million off the cap. They will need that money to sign some of these draft picks. Any insight on Ohrnberger?

  1. Yo Ellis, allow Mr. Foot to introduce you to Mr. Curb....

Then again, the Pats were looking to start over at CB and they also needed some new developmental guys on the interior of the line. This guy is a guard to replace Neal or one of the back ups. Maybe even Mankins insurance.

  1. Or an O Lineman for an undersized Ellis Hobbs? Hmmm...

  1. Why do NFL teams hate Duke Robinson? Ohrnberger is a scrup. Bill Belichick is taking the familiar late-round approach this year of "draft a lot of players, and hope a few of them don't suck." This is reminiscent of the year when they drafted a lot of players (namely offensive linemen) - Oldenburg, Hilliard, Eligin - and none of them ended up making the roster. Passing on Duke Robinson at this point if you're going to take a guard is, by consensus, a bad idea. I see Vollmer maybe being the next Nick Kaczur, but Ohrnberger really has no business getting picked in the fourth round, and you could definitely make a case for him as an undrafted free agent. Very disappointed.

  1. Well, as they say, "In Bill we Trust." Dropping out of the first round and trading Hobbs is creating some salary room, maybe we will get to keep Seymour and WIlfork.

  1. Well he won't be starting this year, barring catestrophic injuries to the line, but who knows? I'm sure Koppen had knocks on his game (going in the 5th round), but he turned into a probowler. Let's let the team do what they do: develop linemen.

  1. Ellis Hobbs for a sub 300lb 4th round Guard? Belichick must be smokin something! Who's going to return kickoffs now? Don't say fumble fingers Matthew Slater!

  1. Ha, good riddance! Mike Holley's boy is gone! Er'body DRINK! Hobbs was an undersized ballboy anyways, but he did play hurt which was all the time.Man, Im trying to find something good about and I can't lol!

  1. Why not choose a lineman who actually has some tools to work with like a Duke Robinson though? Robinson has superior size, athleticism, strength, everything. Ohrnberger just looks like a practice squad guy like when they took Oldenberg.

  1. I'm so tired of you whiners. If you were such good talent evaluators I'm guessing you would be working for an NFL team or ESPN.

  1. its been great having you here hobbs, you almost gave it your 110%. you took way too much blame from fans good luck in philly!

  1. So you're saying Al Davis is one of the top 32 talent evaluators in the world, and Matt Millen was one up until last year? I'm thinking no on that one. There are probably a lot of people who could run a team better than Millen did (that is, you know, build a team that could win a game at some point last year.) Sometimes the best people for the job are not the ones who have it.

  1. Here's how the conversation with the Eagles probably went.
BB: Hey Andy, would you be interested in Ellis Hobbs?
    AR: Ellis who?
BB: You know, #27, plays CB for us. You see him in the end zone a lot.
AR: Oh yeah. Him. What do you want for him?
BB: How about a 3rd rounder.
AR: . . . . long pause while AR almost chokes on his cheesesteak while laughing hysterically.
BB: Well, what do you think he's worth?
    AR: How about a 5th ?
BB: Would you consider two 5’s? Pleeeaaase?
AR: OK, but you need to wash my SUV for a year.
    BB: Deal

  1. I think Hobbs was probably worth at least a 4th next year, but he became a 4th this year and a....6th? (7th?) this year. That's not bad (if you extend the trade out to the final choices). A fourth this year and 6th or 7th this year is easily worth a third next year, which is near the top end of his value.

But Jim, that was pretty good.
