Porter: Taylor could be on way to Patriots

Posted by Christopher L. Gasper, Globe Staff April 3, 2009 07:10 PM

Take it for what it's worth because it's coming from the mouth of Dolphins linebacker Joey Porter, but in a video interview posted inside this story on the website of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, Porter implored the Miami brass to sign free agent Jason Taylor before he goes to the Patriots.

Porter told Omar Kelly of the Sun-Sentinel today that he's spoken to Taylor and that the NFL's active career sacks leader would love to return to the Dolphins, where he spent the first 11 seasons of his career.

Porter said he hopes the Dolphins make the move, but then hinted that if they don't Taylor was headed to New England.

"I'm just watching SportsCenter every day to watch for it to come across the ticker," said Porter of the Dolphins signing Taylor. "I mean Jason really doesn't want to go anywhere from me talking to him, but if it doesn't happen he would have to. Hopefully, we can get him in before he makes that trip out to New England because you really don't want to have to play against him twice a year.

"We know what he can do as a player. I've played against him forever. It's always going to be up top [that] those guys are going to make those decisions, and it's kind of tough to comment on that when you have no control. I don't want to be the one lobbying for something that I feel like puts them in a tough position. I don't want to do that because they like me and I like them. ...But at the same time we need Jason. If we can get him go ahead and get him."

  1. This is sad. Coming off their surprising run to the playoffs, tMiami's leaders are whining in the press. Have they no confidence at all? What message does this send to the locker room if they don't sign Taylor?

If I were a Miami fan I'd be upset to be reading these stories in my local paper and hope they trade him on draft day.

  1. Sign Taylor now. He would be the perfect stop gap at OLB plus who better to help groom the young OLB/DL they will inevitably draft?

  1. he said he would not want to go to a hated rival of the dolphins
a team he played for, for 11 years
if the fins sign him now they will have to give back there sceond round pick to washington due to a clause in the contract

  1. All one needs to remember is that Porter is a washed up Squealer who's last chance is with Miami... He has made numerous comments against the Patriots concerning the Squealers loss to the Pats in the play-offs when he was on the way out.

  1. Parcells does not want this guy back. He has a terrible work ethic and picked a dancing show over his teamates. Kind of what has happened to Tom Brady. First 8 years it was Patriots first everything else 2nd. Now it's girlfriend/eligitamate kid, family dog or goat and then may be the Patriots. Should have kept Cassell, younger and hungrier.

  1. The Pats have probably locked up Taylor - I'm sure BB has gotten Taylor's agreement to join the Pats. I don't think Bill Parcells will take him back. But the Pats won't sign him at this time because Taylor won't be doing the off-season program that most Pats are doing right now. So signing Taylor now - and then him skipping the program entirely - would not be a good start with his teammates. Expect Taylor to sign after the off-season program is over. (Taylor knows that Parcells is not going to resign him, but he's smart to lay the problem at Parcell's feet so Taylor can comfortably sign with the Pats but still be admires and liked in his hometown of Miami. It was Parcells fault - Taylor tried, but Parcells said no. Miami fans will not blame Taylor. Smart.)

  1. Jason didn't look good when he played last year. Maybe it was injuries. Maybe he is better. Maybe not. Don't get your hopes up too high for this guy. Parcells wasn't happy with his work ethic last year. That's why he was let go by Miami in the first place. What is he doing now to get in shape for football at his age?

  1. Taylor played with the Redskins last year and was injured most of the year. Two years ago, Parcells wasn't happy with him and he was, I believe, traded to the Redskins.

  1. keepinitreal, or should I say keepinitstupid!haha
dude, you are definitely neurlogically challenged! haha
The last time we saw Tom Terrific(excluding early first qtr of first game "08") he was leading the Pats down the field and into the end zone for a go ahead score against a ferocious Giants defense with mere minutes to play in the Super Bowl!
Not his fault that defense did not get it done!
I am sure, I am one of many to call you a "MORON"!hahaha

  1. @Steve44: Yeah, that makes some sense. But, God, it's so annoying to see this storyline, day after day after day, every single day, (It's almost as bad as hearing about Julius Peppers.) listening to him "shop" outloud for his contract. Like, doesn't he have an agent or someone that can make sure his name's in all of the Florida papers? Although, I'd have to think that if it was his agent doing the talking, the media would be more comfortable addressing his performance in Washington and how that contract played out.

Actually, Taylor’s departure from the ‘Phins is not too not unlike the situation with Culter: A new coach/GM comes in, sees a commodity in an over-valued player, “fails” to go out of his way to make the player feel special. The player takes the bait and publicly forces the trade. The suit then cashes in on draft-picks/cap-space/the chance to re-build the team in his own image & gets to take credit for any success going forward, while the player’s out in the cold. Where I’d disagree with you is how quickly the fans forget in light of some of that success, like Miami had last year and like Denver will probably have this year.

  1. The pats are as good a pick as any team this year to win it all. I hope they bring back Junior Seau late in the season - he earned and deserves his ring.

REDSKINS 2008 GAME FILMS, AND DECIDE, TRYING TO DISCOUNT TAYLOR
    NOT 100%, DUE TO INJURIES.
