Patriots host Andre Smith
The Patriots are hosting offensive tackle Andre Smith on a pre-draft visit today, according to the Birmingham News.
The Boston Globe has confirmed the report.
At one point, Smith was considered one of the top prospects in the draft. His stock has fallen since the combine in February, when he left early because he apparently felt he wasn't ready to work out.
At 6 feet 4 inches, 332 pounds, Smith played the last two seasons under Nick Saban at Alabama.
The Patriots have the 23d overall selection, and this could be a case where they are projecting that a player once thought to be out of their reach slides to them.

Not clear that the Pats think Smith will slide to 23 but if he slides to 18-22 they would consider trading up for him if they feel his grade is worth it. Because BB knows Saban well he probably feels he can appropriately value this kid. If the Pats could get a good tackle who could play a few years on the right side and then move over to the left side when Light is past his prime, it would be worth a lot.
This is smart due diligence in case he slides even further than anticipated.
He seems to be a bit heavier than other Patriots offensive lineman, especially at his height. Do you know if he played lighter at Alabama?
Very interesting the Patriots would spend one of their 30 visits on Andre Smith. Not only does his attitude suggest he has "bust" written all over him, but I strongly feel the Bengals will take Andre #6 overall
Slightly off topic, but is it just me or does Andre Smith have the worst body ever on a professional athlete?? Not that its an important factor when predicting future football success, but the guy just looks sloppy! I had the misfortunate of watching Andre Smith run shirtless at his pro day and I may have puked a little in my mouth!
I don't want this guy, given the choice, I'd take Oher over A. Smith, at least Oher works hard. I also think that even if Rey M. ILB USC is on the board at 23, you take him, even if he's a two down player, in the nickel package, one ILB comes off the field anyway. I think he can be a good 3 down ILB. On a side note, I've seen a lot of people say stuff about Sean Smith as a joke (there's one Smith shipper out there I guess), I think he'd be a good pick up in the second round, who wouldn;t want a tall CB/S? And as for Pat White, in round 3, maybe, but I'd rather take a real WR like Britt instead, besides Welker plays slot, so we need a young outside guy. (sorry that I go a little off topic, but I don't have a chance come on the site often)
Well apparently he plays better than he works out. For the reverse, see Vernon Ghoulston. I'll take a guy who can play over a guy who looks good at a workout (and you're right, Paul, that looked AWFUL). This guy was being talked about as a potential #1 pick prior to his combine/pro-day missteps. The guy's got the talent. If Saban says he's got the goods....and he's available somewhere close to #23....you grab him and don't look back. Give up the last 2nd and the first to get him at #17.
Actually, while I'm on the topic of giving up to get more...realistically, how many of the top 4 picks do we expect to contribute? By nature of them being a 2nd (or 1st) round pick, I'll assume they at least KEEP them to see how they do, but contribute? Probably 3. To contribute in a meaningful way (starter or other significant role player)? Two. If you can package two picks and get something proven, you take it. Not talking about this guy (Smith) but talking about Peppers or whoever. Package and get a contributor.
Do it. Do it.
I watched him play EVERY game in college. He's the most dominating LT in this draft and he's a good kid. He just made a bad choice. That being said, no way he's there at 23.
Id take him over almost anybody at 23. He is In my opinion the number 2 OT in the draft and if he is around at 20 or so I would trade up.
Ok so this is just one play, and almost all these dratees can provide film of one great play that they did, but it still fun watching this.
