Rodney Harrison on the (driving) range

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff April 8, 2009 09:55 AM

Josh Weinfuss of the Panama City (Fla.) News Herald pulls out his driver and catches up with safety Rodney Harrison on the driving range at the Bay Point Resort Golf Club. Harrison is currently in Florida with his family as his kids are on their spring vacation from school.

In the piece, which can be linked to here, Harrison provides some detail as to his rehabilitation and plans for the future.

"Hey, right now, like I said it's just a matter of getting healthy," Harrison tells Weinfuss. "When I'm healthy I can go anywhere and play football. I have enough confidence and enough smarts and enough experience to know that there's not many places where I can't play and be productive. I know I can still play football at a high level and we'll see.

"I don't think you ever lose the love of the game. I think 10 years from now I'll still feel like maybe I can go out there and play. Do I want to come back? If all things being equal, if I feel really good and I feel like I have the passion for it and if that's something that fits in my family plans, maybe."

  1. Geez... From the way Harrison is speaking, it sounds to me like he believes that the Pats don't want him anymore and that, if that's the case and he still wanted to play, he could "go anywhere and play football". I hope if he's healthy that he's on the Pats' roster for another season, as I have believed for several years that he is such a key member of the defensive backfield.

  1. I think he'll be back. He's a favorite of Belichick...and if we can get some secondary help from the draft, I think we can expect Harrison is an even more lesser role, playing less steps. This would be great for Rodney, and we'd also get to develop the younger guys.

  1. Jimi, if Belichick can cut the greatest Patriot (Troy Brown) then he's certainly not afraid to let Rodney do his thing elsewhere. Still Rodney is a class act and I hope he finds a place to play if he wants.

  1. I wouldn't mind seeing Rodney here for Veteran Minimum, in exchange for less time required on the field. Instead he'd be more of a mentor for the younger guys & utilized on the field only when the plays are "critical" - this would keep him fresh (hopefully) & place more emphasis on his experience/knowledge of the game.

I can see him still being a beast, if only asked to take 12-15 snaps a game

  1. I am a great Rodney fan, but the undertone of his comments sounded like he will not be back as a Pat. The Pats brought in three draft prospects for the safety position for a second look add to that scenarios.

  1. Rodney is one of my favorite patriots players. The patriots should not allow him to sign with another team since they can probably get him for so cheap. He can continue to work with meriweather and sanders and a draft pick if they get a SS.
