Shawn Springs contract follow-up with Pats

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff April 3, 2009 05:00 AM

A closer look at the contract that free-agent CB Shawn Springs signed with the Patriots:

It is a three-year pact, with base salaries of $1.75 million in 2009, $2.25 million in 2010, and $2.75 million in 2011.

The deal includes a $2.7 million signing bonus and workout bonuses of $100,000 per year.

This is a sizable deal for the 34-year-old Springs, who will earn $4.55 million this season. The payout reflects that the Patriots are counting on Springs to step into the No. 1 role vacated by Asante Samuel.

  1. I had him as the #3 CB going into the season. This is surprising considering he is oft injured and one of the oldest CBs in the league. If he tanks this year no doubt he will be cut to free up cap space for Bodden and/or Hobbs resignings.

  1. I'm not sure the Pats are looking for Springs to be the #1 CB, I don't think they look at it like that. He brings two things to the table that other CBs on this team don't: size and flexibility. He can match up with the big WRs on other teams, which will also help in the redzone. Springs can also help at S, where the Pats need some depth. At this point only Meriweather and Sanders are legitimate players there. A few weeks ago when speaking on Sirius about Springs, BB mentioned Springs' size @ 6-0/207, which makes him the team's biggest CB. BB also mentioned that they placed a big value on Springs' versatility, he can play and has played outside CB, slot CB, and S.

  1. I don't think he will be number three at all. Hobbs is so bad words can't even begin to explain.... Springs and Bodden will be the starters... If the two rookies from last year step up Hobbs may be 4th on the depth chart.

  1. Yeah, with a 2.7mil SB, that amortizes to 900k each year, so if the Pats do end up cutting him next season, they would save his salary (2.25 mil), his WO bonus (100k) and have the cap hit accelerated on the signing bonus (1.8mil), but he would have earned 900k of that anyway, so it costs them an additional 900k....so they'd save, what, 1.45 mil, taking a hit of 1.8 mil in dead money? Not too bad, considering he MIGHT be able to perform as a legitimate #1 cb.

  1. I personally don't want Hobbs back after this season. Sure he's been a stud KR for us, however, when it comes to coverage skills, I'll take an injured Springs over Hobbs anyday of the week...twice on Sunday! I think there's even a possibility that Hobbs loses his starting position at some point this season with all the additions(Bodden, Springs) we have, the 2 rookies from last year and perhaps a CB drafted this year! I think this could very well be the last year Ellis Hobbs wears a Pats uniform!

  1. Bodden is going to be the #1 corner barring an injury without question. Are you kidding me? He will be the #3 and #2 if he is really lucky.

  1. BB has serious man-love for Hobbs. Love him or (in most cases) hate him... he's here and he's playing - lots.

  1. I hope I'm wrong, but injury-prone Springs will be overpaid for watching the games from the sidelines. I'm surprised the Pats would spend so much on a cheerleader.
