Tate: I made a mistake
FOXBOROUGH -- University of North Carolina receiver Brandon Tate, who was selected with the 83rd overall pick, held a conference call with reporters today and acknowledged a positive test for marijuana at the combine. Foxsports.com previously reported the test.
"I made a mistake and all that is behind me," he said. "I'm just moving forward and ready to go to the NFL and play for the Patriots."
Tate said he figured the test would affect his draft status, "but I was still waiting on that call because I knew someone would give me a chance and I thank the Patriots for that. I'm going to come in and be willing to work for them."
Tate is recovering from torn ligaments in his right knee, sustained in an Oct. 11 game against Notre Dame. He was asked if he thought he'd be ready to participate in minicamps and training camp.
"When I go up there, I'm going to do rehab and whatever happens, happens," he said, noting that he hasn't had any setbacks.

Mike, do you know when the injury happened? Was it around the same time as Brady? Sounds like a similar injury. Granted, different positions use body parts differently, and every injury is unique to some degree, but is there some type of prognosis? No setbacks means.....starting on the PUP? Straight to IR?
SPLEEFER!!!!
That's right! You BETTER get your ass in Rehab! ;o)
I read that he tore his ACL and MCL, just like Brady did. The big thing will be how well he runs his cuts post-injury. But I really like the pick, he could have easily been a 1st rounder if he hadn't been injured. I think he might start the season on PUP, and then move to IR if he hasn't fully recovered.
When do you think you can bring us the transcript, Mike? Loving your work this weekend, top-notch as always.
Man, I hope Tate and Moss don't have bong-hit parties and Moss start driving into Cops again.
Right now the Pats have 4 receivers at the top of the depth chart (Moss, Welker, Lewis, Galloway) who were either trades or FA pickups. After striking out using high draft picks on WR in recent years ( Bethel Johnson, Chad Jackson) , it will be interesting to see if this kid can stick.

I THINK THEY DRAFTED THIS GUY FOR SPAYA POTS FOR BRADY WITH SAME KNEE AND ALL.
It wasn't a real cop, Bill, just a meter-maid. No biggie :) (kidding, obviously)
Pats trade Ellis Hobbs to Philly for picks 137 and 141.
Bong-hit parties? Now there's a new term!
He'll probably on the IR this season or PUP until week 6 but good selction nonetheless. But, boi if he ever gets back or close to 100%, watch out now! Dude's slippery in the open field, poor mans Deion Branch. Maybe Mike Felger will shut up about losing Branch and stck to talking about Larry Fitzgerald's bootymeat haha
Legalize it, don't criticize it.
Can we stop calling it a "mistake" when someone smokes a little weed? Every mistake I ever made in my life was done under the influence of a legal substance -- alcohol.
I'm tired of people having to apologize for using a harmless substance that makes them feel good. If anything, sharing a bong probably makes teammates more likely to fight for each other in the trenches.
In the name of sanity, it's time to legalize this stuff and for the NFL to stop penalizing players for a performance non-enhancer.

Sounds more like the second coming of Chris Canty, actually. There's nothng wrong with smoking a little weed now and then. There's a LOT wrong with testing poz at the combine because every-freking-body goes there knowing in advance that they will be tested. In other words, our third round pick is either really really stupid (even by standards of North Carolina ath-a-letes), or he just can't pass on it even knowing there's hundreds of thousands or even millions riding on his draft position. Either way, its a lousy pick.
It wasn't a "mistake". It was a deliberate action which he knew for a long time was both illegal and unacceptable to the NFL. Now that its happened, if he doesn't face any further punishment and he's smart enough to stay away from it, he may be the productive player the Pats are hoping for either this year or next.
