ANALYSIS
In trading the first of their 2009 third-round draft choices -- 73rd overall -- to the Jacksonville Jaguars, the Patriots push a valuable chip into next year's draft by acquiring a 2010 second-round draft choice.
Given the depth of the Patriots' roster, this deal is an excellent use of resources.
It will provide the Patriots more flexibility in the 2010 draft, and keep the pipeline of young talent fresh as the team works towards its goal of sustained success in the salary-cap era.
This deal is similar to what the Patriots did last year, when they traded a third-round draft choice to the Chargers for a future second-round choice. That pick acquired from the Chargers ultimately was used in a trade to acquire cornerback Darius Butler this year -- seen by some as one of the best "value" picks in the draft.

Excellent!
I love the Jaguars, but they could struggle again, this year, and that pick we're picking up looks like about the 40th to 45th, a GREAT value for the 73rd!
And an extra 7th is just gravy. Hopefully we'll trade it forward!
That's ONE. More to come, methinks!
Great move. Finally getting some 2010 picks
Considering what is on the board right now talent wise, this was a great move. A 2nd and 7th for a 3rd?!?!?! Not sure what JAX was thinking there.
Great business decision, and with two more tradeable third-rounders (excluding the compensatory pick), I would love to see them do it again. But please God, can they pick an OLB?
Brilliant move.
I'm a huge Jags fan as well, but they have some question marks so it'll probably be around 45 or so...which is a very nice move-up, considering the Pats already drafted 4 players and can't possibly fit too many more on the stacked roster.
I like the trade but here we go again.....they still have not PASS RUSH and lack of olb's make me nervous..They D still needs ALOT of work.
OK. The Jaguars are in a killer division. So they are likely a 6-8 win team next year.
I hope the Pat's can trade and get a second round pick next year from the Chargers. There is something fundamentally wrong with that franchise, beyond the coaching staff.
Hey Mike, what do you see the Pats doing with the next pick? Any player targets, or a trade down/future?
"considering what is on the board right now talent wise"...ARE U SERIOUS. its the 3rd round not the 7th..they still have done nothing for D next year..they might score 100 but there going to give up101...good trade b/c the 2nd next year but other then MAYO AND WILFORK that D needs alot of help.
who are they gonna take at 83 Reiss?
any Peppers talk or has that ship sailed?
Wasn't that the trade the Chargers got Jacob Hester from? I always love when they push picks forward to increase their value, so hopefully this trade works out as well as the last one did.
So they traded the 23rd pick for:
2nd rounder next year
41st pick this year
83rd pick this year
2 5th rounders this year
7th rounder this year
Not too shabby! More talent, less expensive deals, and less egos!
The Pats have not enough spaces on the roster to bring in over ten draft picks, so the trade makes perfect sense. Getting an extra second round pick next year is great and
a seventh round pick can still yield a gem like Matt Cassel if the Pats are lucky.
It appears more and more likely that BB has something in mind when he passed again on a chance to grab a LB. Vince Redd just torn the head off from the practice dummy during a drill and impressed the coaching staff to no end ? Jason Taylor?
I would not be surprised to see the next pick get traded as well for a third next year and another seventh this year. They can package the 2 sevens and draft Vollmer in the 6th, oh wait...Still can't believe they make that pick with the talent on the board.
I like this trade with the Jags. Now that was smart. With no OLB to this point, I can see Taylor coming in.
"other then MAYO AND WILFORK that D needs alot of help" Really??? Have you been drinking this morning?
Hmm? Duly submitted, Steve, but with Merriman coming back, and an all around talented, deep, and probably SIGNIFICANTLY healthy roster, the Bolts are NOT at the top of MY list of owners of coveted draft picks! :p
I'm with Marco and Steve in my increasing unease about our lack of Pass Rushers...But I have confidence that Coach Bill will gather enough Rushers to go with a RIDICULOUSLY deep Secondary to frustrate, thwart, and, by the Gods, tear to SHREDS even the Peyton Mannings of the world!
they've revamped the secondary steve. give up 101? please. what a pessimist.
they have a lot of talent on the defensive side of the ball - adalius thomas, richard seymour, wilfork, mayo, shawn springs, wheatley, sanders, bodden, meriweather, ty warren, jarvis green, etc. now they have darius butler, ron brace, patrick chung...they'll find a way to more consistent pressure on QBs since they have a much improved secondary and a stout d-line with emerging star Mayo at LB.
I guess Steve HAS been hitting the ole Crack Pipe pretty hard!
LT they are not, but with Thomas, Crable, Woods, Redd, and even Colvin coming off the edge, put together with one of the best D Lines in the World AND, suddenly, one of the best and deepest SECONDARIES around...Oh, I like our CHANCES!!!
I am beginning to think that BB may be able to swindle Oakland Raiders by trading them Billy Yates and the 234 pick this year for one of their all-Pros.
Grant, I have been drinking this morning and I still know the D is awesome.
Don't underestimate those late round picks (see Tom Brady).
I hear yah Rob. Plus BB traded yet another 3rd Rounder for a 2nd....that's 3 2nds in 2010.
Belichick is brilliant...blah...blah. One of the least mentioned elements of these trades is that the Pats are giving up this year's production of the draft pick they've traded away. So they trade a 3rd rounder *who potentially would have played all year* for a better pick next year. While it's true the player selected next year presumably will have a career of equal length (barring injuries), nevertheless that production is lost for this year. It's one reason why these trades aren't done more in the NFL. It would be nice once in awhile to hear why very smart people in other organizations don't go this route. Oh, sorry, that would be too controversial!.
It is obvious why very smart people in other organizations don't go this route:
1) They need to plug all of their holes THIS YEAR or they might lose their job. Most do not have the job security of a BB.
2) Their team is not stocked with talented veterans and younger players who are about to "break the bank" with their first contract extensions. The Patriots do not have the room to keep 7 or 8 rookies on their roster and they don't have the free cash to get 2 or 3 first round rookies and be able to resign Wilfolk, Mankins, etc.
Other teams need those picks RIGHT NOW more than the Pats, who have the luxury to think in the best long term interests of the team.
