Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff April 25, 2009 06:53 PM

The Patriots traded the 26th overall pick and the and the fifth-round pick they acquired earlier today (162) and received pick 41 (second round), pick 72 (third round) and pick 83 (third round), according to the team's Twitter page.

This gives the Patriots 13 overall selections in this year's draft.

  1. 4 seconds and 4 thirds.... have a feeling the dealing might not be done yet...

  1. Wow - a first and 5th round pick for a 2nd and 2 3rd round picks? In Bill We Trust.

  1. Guess they didn't want Matthews....Not sure what they are doing but as others have said typical BB....

  1. So... I cut a great weather day short to see who Belichick will pick and he not only trades down once but twice, thereby passing on some interesting names still on the board.

A bit frustrating but you've got to love it - Belichick really knows what he's doing. This is great. Next year if it's the same situation it'll just be the radio in the car.

  1. I love this trade. Four seconds and four thirds this year. Incredible work.

  1. Greaaaattttttttt - 13 picks and it looks like we're not going to use ANY of them. You can't tell me there's NO ONE the Pats can't use in the 1st round!!!! I'm watching all the competition get stronger and we're sitting on our thumbs filling up our draft pick bank. USE SOME OF THE DARN PICKS!!!!!

  1. If some of these picks don't turn into Peppers....come on. There's no way 6 rookies make the roster.

  1. A late 1, with a 5 tossed in, for a 2, a 3, and a 3???

    AWESOME trade.

I guess I'm gonna have to get over my man love for Matthews and Maualuga!!!

Coach Bill has LONG since earned our trust.

If his analysis of our Salary Cap situation, the players available in the late 1st, and the players available in the 2nd and 3rd are such that the trade makes sense, that's good enough for ME!

Going this route will give us AMAZING flexibility, and quite likely save us Cap Space.

    A late 1 and a 5 for a 2, a 3, and a 3???

    BRAVO.

  1. They are saving $$$ for Wilfork & Peppers

  1. Wouldn't be shocked to see one of the seconds and one of the thirds used to sneak back into the 1st round if a player they like is still there... or an early second sent for a 1st next year...

Posted by Ben April 25, 09 07:04 PM
  1. Make that 8 players, not 6. Still, no way they have 8 rookies come in and contribute. Maybe make the roster, but not come in and contribute. You can only backfill with so many guys. Eventually you have to go get a guy.

  1. What? they gave up their 1st round for more 2nd and 3rd round picks!!?? They already have too many of those. No way they can sign all those guys onto the roster this year. There are too many! What a waste. Couldn't they at least have gotten a 1st rounder next year?

Posted by KFG April 25, 09 07:05 PM
  1. So we've essentially traded the original 23rd straight UP for a 2, a 3, and a 3!!!

    WOW.

    He IS the MAN.

  1. We should start a drinking game, every time they trade a pick drink, I'll bring the Keg!

  1. Why stockpile picks this year when they don't have that many open roster spots?

Posted by Big Mo April 25, 09 07:06 PM
  1. And here is why they are in it every year. Watch em now trade a couple of lower picks for a first next year with crappy team...putting them in a position for another Jarod Mayo heist. But plese Bill...get some secondary help this year!

  1. I hope you're right Jim~

  1. 8 picks in the top 100???

    Good TIMES!!

Thank God it's Coach Bill calling the shots, and our lunatic fans!

  1. Amazing. Stockpiling. I love it. No one I really loved at 23 or 26. Think they can still get a LB in the group of Matthews with the 2nd round pick from KC. I just hope not Lauranitus because I don't like Ohio St LB's

  1. SCREW trading for Peppers! That would be INTENSELY stupid!

Put ME down for MASSIVE Back to the Future swaps: Trading this year's picks to move up in NEXT year's draft, even while amassing fresh talent BOTH years!!!

I wouldn't be surprised, under the circumstances, if we did that THRICE!

  1. in bill we trust or is it in bill we cheat. 18-0 then................. look at the last 3 years what has you team produced. There competitive yet nuthin greedy bastards.

    I LOVE MY TEAMMMMM

  1. Christopher,
We are not Lions fans.... there is no way that all these picks make the roster. Gotta be more dealing coming such as two 2nds for a first next year.

How about a 2nd and a 3rd for someone like Boldin?

Posted by Big Mo April 25, 09 07:15 PM
  1. I hope they're making a big package for somebody. I'm sure it's smarter to use some of the picks, but the fan in me wants a big name. Who knows, how about somebody no one knows is on the block? Who thought Vrabel was going to be traded?

Posted by Rob in Central MA April 25, 09 07:15 PM
  1. my not-so-crystal crystal ball says that we draft rey mauluga with the 34th...

    watch it happen...

    Posted by Lucas O April 25, 09 07:21 PM
  1. pointless unless impact players are coming back

Posted by Classless April 25, 09 07:25 PM
  1. Mo, thanks for reminding me which team we're rooting for, wise ass.

    If you think it'll take 2 2's to get a 1, you're on Crack.

    A 2009 2 will fetch a 2010 1, straight UP.

    That's how it works.

    ***

Everybody is aware that we had more draft picks then roster spots BEFORE the draft started...So I kind of get the feeling that Coach Bill is aware of that, TOO...don't you think? ;o)

The man builds Championship teams by improving Value when Opportunity presents that chance. The Ravens trade was THIEVERY!!!

    Relax and enjoy...
