Vontae Davis visits Pats

Posted by Christopher L. Gasper, Globe Staff April 8, 2009 06:30 PM

Despite the work the Patriots did in the off-season to secure their secondary, the team still wants to investigate a few of the 2009 draft's top defensive backs, both of whom have Big Ten roots.

The Patriots had Illinois cornerback Vontae Davis in town for a pre-draft visit this week, according to a league source, who confirmed the visit, first reported by Albert Breer of The Sporting News.

Breer is also reporting that the Patriots will host Ohio State cornerback/safety prospect Malcolm Jenkins, widely regarded as the draft's top available defensive back, next Monday.

Both players have some question marks.

Davis, the younger brother of 49ers tight end Vernon Davis, was part of a group of players that the website NFL Draft Bible.com reported, citing anonymous sources, tested positive for marijuana at the NFL Scouting Combine in February. However, Davis's agent, Todd France, has denied Davis tested positive for the drug.

Jenkins, who won the Thorpe Award as the nation's top collegiate defensive back playing cornerback for the Buckeyes, is being eyed by some NFL teams as a safety due to his slow 40-yard dash times. The 6-foot, 204-pound Jenkins was clocked at 4.54 at the combine and was not able to noticeably improve that number at the Ohio State pro day.

Now, our Mike Reiss-crafted disclaimer on pre-draft visits:

NFL teams are allowed up to 30 visits with out-of-town prospects before the draft. The purpose of those visits can vary -- from genuine interest, to a smokescreen, to a final medical check. Sometimes the visits can result in a player being ruled out by a team (e.g. if a player's interview or film work raises concerns about his ability to fit into a team's scheme).

  1. Maybe this is a dumb question, but the phrase "out-of-town prospects" is always used when talking about pre-draft visits.

Does that mean there is a different standard for local players that don't need travel or lodging? For example hosting a player from BC or UConn.

  1. anything quoted from a source and not written by you (e.g. the "mike reiss-crafted disclaimer") should be in quotes

  1. Don't mention nfl draft bible. If you do, you're giving their story credibility, which is exactly what they want. They are a joke of a website trying to rack up hits. There is a reason they only get 10,000 visitors a month.

They don't have any inside sources.

In fact, the only people to know about the test results are the doctors, players themselves, and possibly the agents. The teams don't even know.

Why would NFL draft bible know? Like come on.

  1. Another reason to host players they won't get is so they can figure how good they really are...in case they get drafted by the Raiders and are free in 4 years.

Also a good indicator they think they might package some picks and move up in the draft if they are looking at higher grade players.

  1. Matt, you failed to mention M.A. also is obsesses with certain types of men - men who play c.b. even though the only thing he's ever coached is (maybe) powderpuff football.

  1. Matt--you forgot Mike Allen's tired anti-Hobbs comments.

  1. O believe me I've had the corner back argument with Mike Allen. Hobbs is a good if not great slot corner back but he was forced out of position before he was ready and hes still reliable but the Pats don't trust him and haven't had a solid pass rush so they've been playing back the last few years . I still like the guy but there's a bunch of haters since the Burress TD in the Superbowl where he should have had safety help over the top. Hes not as bad as people think.

Wait til everyone sees Wheatley this year! o boy that's why were not drafting a corner this kid is going to be great. Remember the Indy game he worked his way into the starting line up made a sick play then got hurt. Wheatley is going to open some eyes this season. I believe we focus on LB/Safety then O-line early in the draft. BPA at 23 no matter what. I'm all for William Moore or Larry English at 34. I'm not on the Connor Barwin band wagon unless hes there at 47.

  1. p.s. I like Jenkins dropping to say around 16 or 17 or Maualuga and the Pats using their third or last second to move up and snag one. Forget Jenkins 40 times the kid is a player as well as Rey. Imagine Maualuga and Mayo patrolling the middle of the field. Maualuga is great on the run and rushing and Mayo is great everywhere. Maualuga will be our Ted Johnson with a little bit of Lofa Tatupu (smarts wise) mixed in. Bruschi can play on third downs this season until Rey gets adjusted to life in the NFL.

  1. I'm kinda surprised of all the talk of moving Jenkins to safety. I realize that his 40 time was merely average but he is taller/long arms then most corners which when combined with good instincts makes up for a step or two. Also, he had the fastest cone time which shows excellent quickness and agility which is almost as important if not more then straight-line speed. I could see him having to move to safety down the road and making a successful transition, I do think he could be a terrific corner for the next 7-8 years before switching and corner is a far more valuable commodity then a free safety in my opinion.

A guy who is also being considered as a tweener who might be a great value is Sherrod Martin from Troy. He will be 25 at the start of the season ( some injury/redshirt years) but he is a very athletic free safety who likes to hit and many think could play corner in the NFL...great size, flexibilty and tackling is something we could use long-term. he's 6'1 190 lbs, 4.52/40, 90 takcles, 4 picks as a Senior. If he is on the board when we pick at the end of the third, would love to add a guy with his flexibility.

  1. Larry English has good production in college and looked good in the Senior Bowl practices. But in competition against the best in the Senior Bowl game he was pretty much a non-factor as was Clay Matthews and BJ Raji for that matter. This has me wary on English and Matthews for the Pats. I think they have better choices. Barwin only played about 3 downs on defense in the Senior Bowl and one of them was an excellent rush where he flushed the QB and landed on him from behind as he threw. He has questions marks as to his strength but is in my eyes promising.
