Fred Taylor's goal: Catch Jim Brown
Veteran running back Fred Taylor, who is in his first year with the Patriots after 11 seasons with the Jaguars, has one personal goal in mind as he nears the end of his career.
"I've always said I wanted to catch Jim Brown," Taylor tells Vito Stellino of the Florida Times-Union.
Taylor is 16th on the all-time rushing charts, with 11,271 yards. Brown is eighth at 12,312 yards.
"Whether I do or don't, it's been great playing in the NFL for this long. When you look at the average life span, things that I've gone through throughout my career with injuries. ... I've just got to keep moving forward. Whatever I end with, I'll take it,'' Taylor says in the Times-Union piece.

Nice to know our new addition is looking for individual goals and the heck with team goals. Doesn't seem like a Patriot style to me. Dillion left all personal goals at the door and didn't even acknoeledge his record breaking season, he was all about a super bowl.
canpatsfan: You're an idiot.
Do you honestly think he came here to set records canpats? He came here for a shot at a ring.He could've gotton more money elswhere without a doubt. The Jags have no shot this year. If we get a little over a 1,000 yards the next 2 seasons out of him we'll get we wanted out of him and he'll get what he wanted.
What are you like some Jr. High Assistant Principle or something?Cut the guy some slack dude.
Look at the guys history, he has always been a team player, he clearly is demonstrating this by appearing at rookie minicamp. He states that he has and is very coachable and willing to do whatever it takes to help the team win. I think he is being realistic that he is on the tail end of his career. Trying to achieve personel goals at this juncture in his career is perfectly normal.
Personal Goals are to be private inner personal goals. When you talk about them you take away from the team concept. We could very well be reaching the end of the Patriot Way - 100% team first. No Brown, McGinnest, Vrabel etc. I think we are basically just like every other team. At least Hobbs "what about me" and Assante "where's my money" are gone, which should help the team concept a bit.
canpatsfan make a very valid point. While I can appreciate Taylor';s personal goal, and him wanting to do i, it's something he needs to keep within himself as long as he is part of this Patriot's team.
When it happens, if it does, I am sure that the media will give him his recognition.
Until then, it's better left unsaid.
JRWest give your head a shake. canpatsfan is 100% right on the money. You can't start talking about personal goals when you play a team game. If Maroney or Morris are carrying the load I don't want a cry baby asking where his touches are going, I won't break the record I wanted to. Good point Mike Allen.
Fred Taylor is going to be great for us. He came here for voluntary OTAs and is doing everything we could ask. He's also being polite to reporters....they asked him about his goals and he answered winning a Super Bowl first and then said catching Jim Brown. The team goal was first.
Rich, maybe you should stop shaking your head. You've obviously disoriented..
Fred Taylor's career is an open book. Maybe you guys can go give it a look over and see what type of player he is before judging him ignorantly again.
You're really not representing Patriot fans well right now.
Chill out guys. This is a legitimate long-range goal. He's not saying he wants to reach that mark this year. There's nothing wrong with having individual goals and with making them public. It shows confidence and accountability. You think Ty Law didn't want to set the Pats record for most interceptions? Did that make him a selfish player? Individual goals must be reached in order for team goals to be achieved. The Pats must think they are important because they build performance-based incentives into a lot of their contracts.
Jim you make a point but lets keep individual goals to yourself and team goals in the publc. Fred just hasn't figured out the Patriot way just yet, but he will. He appears to have a solid work ethic which should be a good thing. JR I to agree with Canpatsfan you are the idiot. Just because somebody has a negative comment towards the Patriots you take a shot at him, what a homer, I mean loser
Wow. JRWest you consistently take the words out of my mouth, and for that I thank you. People bitching about Taylor's quote obviously have reading or interpretation problems (possibly from a failed attempt at early education). There's only one reason anyone comes to play for the patriots, and thats to play for a team that plays as a team. The Patriots are truly the embodiment of that idea. Besides that now, I'm pretty damn glad he wants to break that record. At the pace lawrence Maroney is going, he's due to break 200 yards this season... and that's if he can make through the preseason and even then... the first two games, without getting injured.
My point here is, if you never set personal goals, you will never accomplish a god damn thing in your life. *Personal goals may include; playing as a team! also, running for a lot of yards and scoring TDs!* Either of those two personal goals is absolutely fine in my book. We all know the Patriots have a capable passing offense and if someone wants to take it on their shoulders to embolden our running attack, more power to him.
