Lombardi on Pats-Raiders trade talks
Mike Lombardi of the National Football Post files his "Sunday at the Post" article and includes the following under the category of "Things I heard around the NFL last week":
"The trade rumors about Oakland Raiders defensive end Derrick Burgess are real. So real, in fact, the Raiders asked the Patriots for their second-round pick this year, Sebastian Vollmer, and back-up quarterback Kevin O’Connell in exchange for Burgess. The Pats turned down that trade proposal, just as the Raiders have turned down a few of the Patriots’. New England remains interested in Burgess, but the prevailing thought in the NFL is that the Raiders will not trade him – they’re just making it seem that they’re making the effort. Burgess has made it clear to anyone who listens that he wants out."

With that kind of trade demand, it's pretty obvious Al Davis doesn't want to trade Burgess. Burgess and his agent aren't dumb though and I am sure don't want to be treated as fools. That is not a genuine trade demand. That's a waste of everyone's time and cellphone minutes. 3rd rounder, take it or leave it, Al. You are going to have a disgruntled player who isn't part of your rebuilding plans or you can secure a draft pick before you release him.
I want the Kool-Aid that the Al Davis and the Raiders' front office is drinking. That trade proposal is laughable. Move on from dealing with the Raiders. I am sure they will release him at some point just as they did with the newly signed D'Angelo Hall last year. The Raider organization is easily one of the worst run professional sports franchises.
After hearing all the trade talks Burgess will make it real easy on Oakland management to trade him. I still can't believe his coach said publicly that he was looking at trading a player.
Al Davis is still sore about Moss blowing up with the Pats.
He feels like the Pats made a fool out of him - which we did.
He's never going to let Burgess go without something stupid like a 2nd round pick and a player.
Davis is a childish moron. He feels like the whole NFL is out to get him.
They're not. They're just waiting for him to kick the can.
I'm sure trade negotiations broke down right after Davis' proposal was drowned out by the hysterical laughter coming from Belichick & Co.
Burgess for O'Connell and Vollmer??!? What kind of crack you smokin', Al? You think you've got Dwight Freeney over there or something??
oh that Al Davis!...he's great for comic relief
O'Connell isn't going anywhere! Sounds like Davis is still feeling the burn from the Moss trade.
That deal is a laffer.
3rd rounder or nothing.
Sounds like Al Davis is trying to make up for the Moss trade.
Veteran OLB in final year of contract for a 2nd round OL (likely 4yr contract) and 3rd round QB (with 3 years remaining)
I think Al Davis is old and is experiencing dementia. What else explains this and the fact they take Bay at WR instead of Crabtree, LOL. We need to find Al Davis's Power of Attorney and have them take over.
Al Davis playing a little hardball huh what a joke just give em up Al we're not giving Randy back
Al Davis lost his mind some time back in the 80's, but come on, this trade deal is a little crazy even for him, I'll give you one old guy for a rookie and your back-up QB who are both really young, I'll have them for years (or until I cut them this season) and you'll have the old guy for a year maybe two....................Someone please help the raiders by taking over, I could do a better job at this point. The raiders used to be hated because the won, but now all we can do is laugh at them. I don't know much about the player they are after, but a 4th rounder is high enough in my opinion, besides Burgess is going to have to play a new position, so that cuts the value down a bunch.
As a kind of side note, I find it interesting that they focused on O'Connell as part of the trade package. They see something in him? I agree that this kid might be a very good QB some day.
I also agree that the Raiders remain in a fantasy land. They have given us too many players for too little over the years, the Moss trade being the most outrageous, and now they want to get value for older mistakes.
I guess the value of Vollmer, while not recognized by many Pats fan, who called the pick an overreach, might be more obvious to people who are actually involved in the NFL. Apparently the Dallas Cowboys were quite interested in drafting Vollmer as well, and that might be the reason why he was taken high even though we layman fans had never heard of him.
No way, should they make that trade. That'll be equal to giving up 2 2nds for and injury prone player, no thanks! 3rd round at the most. Or even a conditional pick that could turn into a 2nd based on %percentage played and then make sure he doesnt hit that mark. Sounds Pats -Like
Hilarious. Looks like Al wants his money back on the Moss deal.
Wow, of course Al Davis would want a trade like that! Its amazing to me that the Raiders even gave their first rounder to Darius. That is one dumb man if he really think were giving him our sec rounder and kevin... STUPID!!!!!!
yea you guys are so right about AL not. you guys think that your team is so good how come it took years for yous guys to even be thought about being a good team AL still knows his stuff and if you think number 21 was drafted to be a S now is the best coner in the game how does that happen if AL sucks sorry that you guys won't be good here in a few years but thats life yes i said it first they will suck in a few years
If the Patriots trade for this guy they are out of their minds. He is going to be 31 in August, he's coming off and injury, he's never played linebacker, and he's looking for a big money contract.
They should have never let Vrable go. They also should have drafted a young potential rush linebacker like Matthews, Barwin, Everett Brown, Cody Brown or Simtin instead. It was not a well thought out draft.
Look keep your picks and players we don't want them , that's why we said no to anything like just a 3rd. Burgess is in the last year of his contract and he only makes aqround 2 mil a year so he is going to work like a mad man to get that next and probly his last good contract . Laugh all you want but Raiders are on the up swing and you guys are heading strait down . I'm mean really how has your draft been the last 4 years not that many good picks , quit living off that Brady pic . New England = overrated.
Vollmer could be one of our starting tackles of the future (and NEAR future, considering the Pats' contract situation next season).
O'Connell is our QB of the future (yes, someday even Tom Brady will retire)
Burgess has spent the last two seasons injured, and is 21 years old. I agree that it's clear that the Raiders are only going through the motions with Burgess's trade demands.
It definitely was a fake trade proposal, and they can't be serious. The Raiders have to know that O'Connell has more value to us than he does to them. They already have a young QB (who Davis is in love with) and a more than capable backup (Garcia). So there is no place for O'Connell there. He'd be there third guy, while he's clearly our top backup.
If you want to make a trade for a player you target someone that you value more than the other team. Not the other way around. This offer must have been a fake.
its a joke to even suggest that trade be made, 2nd round pick, occonell, and vollmer. even trading a 2nd round pick is a bad idea for an injury prone 33 year old.
....I admit it's just a "gut feeling" but I really think O'Connell is going to be a very good QB in this league.....he certainly has the physical tools....no way the Pats make this trade in a million years
weezelwords:
I think the depth chart of QBs in Oakland would end up to be Garcia before Russell. Compared to JaMarcus, Rohan Davy looked like Drew Bledsoe.
Robert, what's up with the run-on sentence? You're not exactly Nostradamus to predict that the Pats will have some lean years in the future. EVERY team in the NFL has down years from time to time. I like the Pats chances as long as Belichick & Brady are still there, though. You're right about #21 on the Raiders. He is the best corner in the league, but don't give Al too much credit. Even a blind squirrel finds an acorn once in a while.
Yeah the Raiders are on the upswing all right, they went from the 4th worst team in 07 at the 7th worst team on 08, huge change, watch out for them Raiders!!!!
One player does make a team, and #21 is great i don't think anyone would deny that, but it's easy to play against that defense, all you have to do is throw to the other side there's no one else to fear....One great player from the draft recently doesn't mean AL Davis still has it. As long as the Pats stick to their team system, they won't fall all the way down like the Raiders did.
I'd say give us your 1st rounder for Burgess because you havent had a good pic in the first round becide Mayo for a long time . We were never gonna trade you him , he will have a great year just like the Raiders will ..Book it . Last year was the first of many for you guys not to make the playoffs .New = overrated . Last time we dont care about Moss he stopped playing for us half way through the season who wants a loser like that , play only when he wants to .thanks but no thanks
Robert., or is it Scotty G, or is it Nancy? Do you hear voices in your head? Can you decide on who you are?
And instead of wasting time in posting here, maybe you should work on trying to pass your GED.
Anyone else think it's funny how often there are "other" fans on this site? Does anyone else ever bother visiting another fan site to do blog drive-bys?
Colts fans. Bengals fans. Giants. Jets. San Diego. And now of all people, Oakland fans. Surprised you even have an internet connection in that black hole of yours.
Thanks for stopping by, Scotty G.
You talk mighty tough. Enjoy that Raider upswing of yours.
Sad that simply making draft picks in the designated amount of time is considered momentum for a good season.
Hey Tony you'd better hope you guys dont have a single injury this season cause you guys are lean when it comes to your depth . If i were you i would keep all of your draft picks and maybe start drafting some players , instead of trading back and trading back to gather more picks . Your team better start drafting better, thats why your going nowhere fast cause your team is old and the nuts you have gathered are rotten .
Scotty, the fact that you're comparing recent Raiders draft picks to recent Patriots draft picks is laughable. A first rounder for Burgess? Get real. Maybe a second, and even that's a stretch.
PS - Raiders will have another losing season - book it.
lol even if burgess has a good year he'll leave for free agency. u guys might franchise him but i doubt it. he'll probably play this year if he doesnt get franchised. this is his contract year so he will do good. he ain't gonna want to come back to the raiders unless Al davis makes him the highest paid DE. i think it's still possible considering al davis's track record.
Haha a raider's fan on here trolling under multiple accounts! I guess it makes sense, I wouldn't want to read the sports section in Oakland either.
I'm a fan of the Raiders yes , so i get most news , blogs and storys about my team on the net . Lombardi used to work for the Raiders so for some reason i read this cause it had something to do with the Raiders . I can see that you all don't want anybody who doesnt share the same opinion ,but when the season comes along and your enjoying a nice losing streak cause you don't have depth, maybe you should have given up that 2rd pick . You did'nt make the playoff's last year you won't make them this year and you will have the oldest team in the NFL . Wake up NE your ship is going down .Book it
The Patriots haven't landed a difference-maker in rounds 3-5 since Ellis Hobbs in 2005 , now thats a joke . If that is the case then why not part with some draft picks to get a DE in a contract year . He is going to have a monster year and you will wish you would have given up the draft picks .
Tony if you think comparing the last 5 drafts that both teams have had is laughable then you really don't know what your talking about , just stay in your little bubble and soon you will be talking about the good old days of winning . Terrence Wheatly , Shawn Crable, Kevin O'connell , Jonathan Wilhite ,Matt Slater ,Kareem Brown , Clint Oldenburg , Justin Rogers , Mike Richardson,Justise Hairston ,Corey Hilliard OT and Oscar Lua
I know you want me to stop , cause that's pretty painfull . Next year you won't sniff the playoffs ...Book it .

it should be known that al davis and bellicheat are actually close friends who speak quite often. the raiders are making it look like they are making an effort to trade burgess cuz he wants out. of course its outrageous. moss was going nowhere in oakland. he plays when he wants to. dont forget that the pats passed on him twice his draft year. he clearly has found a home for now in new england. trades are set up to benefit both teams. burgess will play hard this year. remember sapp led all interior lineman in sacks just so he could play one more year than he should have. both teams know what they are doing.
Scotty G.
Raiders last 5 years:
McFadden = Bust......... Mayo = Rookie of the Year
Russell = Bust.......... Merriweather = one of best safeties in AFC
Huff = Bust for where he was picked...... Maroney = Juries out, this year is the test
Washington = Bust...... Mankins = All pro
Gallery = Bust....... Watson = Would be Raiders best player on offense.
And to top it off:
Darrius Heyward-Bey and Michael Mitchell = BUST
How's that tuck rule treating you?
hey scotty g. How many super bowls have the raiders won in the last 10 years? answer=nada. quit crying!!! the raiders suck and will for a long time!!!
Think again Paul From London
First off if you think that Merriweather is one of the best safeties in the AFC you are smoking something good ,cause your own team is looking for a starting safety , what to replace a pro bowl safety ..yeah smoke some more it will ease the pain of this year .
Mc Fadden-- looks healthy ready for a good year .
Trevor Scott -- led all rooks in sacks last year
Chaz Schilens -- Won Starting job rookie year .
Ja Marcus Russell -- Please look at his stats compare him to other QB and the beginning of there 1st year ( Full season ) and will have a better line this year ..But this is a make or break year for him
Zach Miller -- One of the best young TE in the NFL ..Look it up and believe .
Mario Henderson -- Won starting job by the end of season , should of won it at the start .
John Lee --Look Him up and believe
Michael Bush --He would start for your team without a question and he is 3rd on the depth chart .
And yeah Jack we both have won three SB so get off your high horse and ask a real queston .
the depth
Actually, I want what you're smoking Scotty G.
broccoli.
Because it's amazing how you just forget to finish . . . mustard.

Do you think maybe the reason you've been able to stay such an avid
Poconos.
I mean fan, is because how not low you seem to always be?
Stay strong. Bookend it.
Licorice
the real question is where were all you pats "fans" when they were the laughing stock of the league for 20 years? suddenly they win a couple superbowls and theres a "patriots nation" thats the real laugher
