New Patriots and jersey numbers

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff May 12, 2009 10:15 AM

For those updating rosters at home, the following are some new jersey assignments:

  • S Brandon McGowan will wear No. 43
  • TE Alex Smith will wear No. 80
  • LB Vinny Ciurciu has switched from No. 43 to No. 50

    1. Yes! My wife will be so happy when I update the board.

We may have to move the Roster Board to a more prominent spot with 92 names on it, though. I was thinking of moving the China Cabinet and making the Dining Room into a War Room.

Thanks Mike, I love when you add some humor to my day.

    1. Alex Smith may want to change his number, 80 will be retired soon for the ultimate-Patriot of all time, Troy Brown.

    1. Giving out Troy Brown's number already? Too early.

    1. Mike Vrabel was a legend in this town and you give his jersey number away to some scrub who probably wont make the team...NOT COOL

    1. Giving out Vrabel's old # is okay. He's playing on another team, but Brown's? Not cool.

    1. I feel bad for the Patriots in this regard. They just don't have enough numbers. I think they will eventually have a Ring of Honor, which gives players like Brown his due, but also allows them to use the number. With the players from the championship era retiring, it seems like the best solution to me to find an acceptable middle ground.

    1. There are 99 available numbers for 92 players (91 with the season ending injury in minicamp). Then, on top of that there is all kinds of rules about who can wear what number type. Plus, I think you can only use 10-19 for a WR if all of the 80s are used up. Troy is a Patriot and doesn't need his own number. He's too selfless to keep it to himself.

    1. Hey Mike - if they go that route of the Ring of Honor, do you think they start reusing the current retired numbers as well?

    1. Will you people get over it. Was everyone so up in arms when Seau took #55 back in '06? How about Wilhite wearing #24 or Sanders taking #36.I don't hear many people getting bent out of shape with Edelman wearing #11..... The player makes the number, not the other way around. RELAX.

    1. I agree with mike that the Pats really wont be able to retire all the numbers that deserve it after this championship era is over (let's hope that doesnt come soon). I think they should have a ring of honor type thing with players like ben coates, bledsoe, troy brown, ty law, mcginnest, rodney harrison, bruschi, maybe even dieon branch...although if welker keeps it up he could become one of the best patriots wr's ever. Then i think they have to retire certain numbers like brady
