NFLPA leader Smith at Gillette
New NFL Players Association director DeMaurice Smith is at Gillette Stadium today, meeting with members of the Patriots regarding various issues with the collective bargaining agreement and the union.
Smith takes over for the late Gene Upshaw at a crucial time, as players and owners work toward labor peace.
Left tackle Matt Light is the Patriots' player representative. In April, Light spoke to the Boston Globe about why Smith was the players' choice to succeed Upshaw.
"I felt like we had four strong candidates, but I think it was really clear to everybody in the room that DeMaurice was the guy that just stood above the rest," Light said. "He is very polished, a very good speaker, and has some great insight into how business is done at the level of which the NFL conducts business. He's been kind of a guy that has experienced everything you could want in a director, a guy who knows how to negotiate and how to get the best deal for everyone involved. I felt like he did a great job of understanding and listening to what the guys wanted."

Mike Reiss, Christopher L. Gasper and the rest of the Globe team provide regular updates –and a behind-the-scenes look– on the daily happenings of the Patriots.

One thing I hope they address is the retired players who didnt make anything near what the current players do. It's sad to see some of them not be able to afford meds or even create an income for themselves. I would love to see them open the books up. Just to see how much KASEESH teams really generate season to season.
