OTA video: Shawn Crable

Posted by Chris Forsberg, Boston.com Staff May 21, 2009 08:45 AM

All this week we're featuring video from Wednesday's OTA (organized team activity) at Gillette Stadium. Today's video: OLB Shawn Crable.

As his name is bandied about as someone who can help ease the loss of Mike Vrabel at outside linebacker, it's easy to forget that Shawn Crable has never been on the field for a regular-season snap in the NFL.

"I don't know what it is like to line up against somebody and play in the games when they matter," Crable told reporters after Wednesday's practice that capped the Patriots' first voluntary OTA of the offseason, this one a three-day session geared towards younger players and recent acquisitions. "I don't know what that is yet."

Crable, a third-round pick (78th overall) in last year's draft, missed the first eight games of the 2008 regular season with a shin injury before being moved to injured reserve on Nov. 5.

The Patriots have seemingly yet to fully address Vrabel's loss (via the draft, free agency, or trade), which suggests Crable will vie for time as part of a group that includes Pierre Woods, Tully Banta-Cain, Vince Redd, and Angelo Craig. Adalius Thomas, who has played both inside and outside linebacker during his time in New England, will presumably start at the other outside spot.

Crable, who deemed himself in full health Wednesday, is simply worried about making the roster right now.

"We got a long until they finalize the roster," said Crable. "I figure if I keep doing what I gotta do and [Patriots coach Bill Belichick] feels comfortable, he'll put me out there.

"Yeah, I want to play. Don't nobody not want to play. I'm hoping that [Belichick] puts me out there and I get to show what I can do."

Crable noted he watched film of Willie McGinest in the offseason, a player with the same physical build (both players stand 6 feet, 5 inches), but Crable suggested he had to work on staying lower to the ground and improve his footwork.

  1. "Don't nobody not want to play." How did you do in English Comp at Michigan Shawn? May be the 1st triple negative ever uttered.

  1. Yeah, I noticed that Jim. If a double-negative is actually a positive, then a triple-negative must be...a negative? Oh well. Nobody will care as long as he can play OLB!

  1. And Bill Belichick isn't appearing on "Dancing with the Stars" anytime soon.

  1. Don't nobody care so long as he don't embarass nobody no time soon.

  1. Hey Professor, why don't you stick to grading papers and let people who actually watch the games talk football? Run along now.

  1. Gee, that's spookie Frank. I WAS grading papers, and I AM going to go for a run after work. Are you psychic? ;-)

  1. How come most athletes don't know how to construct one full sentence without proper English? Is it supposed to be cool? We can't ask immigrants to learn English if the citizens born and raised here can't speak the language.

  1. Are you guys serious? Listen to the rest of the interview. Most athletes can't verbally express themselves as well as he does. "Don't nobody" is used pretty commonly in slang. Adding a "not" was actually a clever way of emphasizing his desire to see game time this season.

  1. I do not care how the man speaks, he was not hired for his linguistic aptitude. He was drafted to create havoc toward the opposing teams quaterback. It seems like some people who have the opportunity to comment on posted stories are nothing but a bunch of self righteous, "know it all" TROLLS, who live for no other reason than to insult and denegrate others. Those of you who take pleasure in this are generally wimpy, "psuedo fans," you should consider getting a life. If Shawn Crable emerges this year, and gets10 or 12 sacks, the same people who have castigated his grammer, will be hailing him as the best thing since sliced bread.

  1. I think WHOMEVER rails against Shawn should be invited to training camp as a stand in for Tom Brady. So, when the aforementioned linguistic-challenged Wolverine comes around the end we can see if "not nobody" will be around. Methinks Jim L. will return to grading papers with a broken clavicle. I think that should be the theme on the training camp t-shirts this year, "Don't nobody not want to not go to no Super Bowl." Or some derivative of such said thingy.
