What happens to Barnes and Kettani? Will they be able to practice
at all with the team? My understanding is that they have to serve two
years with the military and then apply for reserve duty.

You can never have too much roster depth at the PUNTER position.

I remember that kid from West Point was drafted, but had to go out on duty... Howcome there isn't a similar situation here with the three Navy players? I'm probably missing something extremely relevant, but any help would be much appreciated. Thank you.

Jim Keddy, Great Question! Here's a cut from the Annapolis paper on your question:
"Obviously, the future of Navy football players in the NFL is clouded at the moment as current policy does not allow any deviation from the five-year post-graduate commitment. However, there is a new Secretary of the Navy in place and it will be interesting to see whether former Mississippi Governor Ray Mabus brings Navy in line with service academy rivals Army and Air Force in allowing graduates with professional sports potential to serve two years on active duty and a subsequent six years in the reserves.
Rumors abound that officials with Army, Air Force and Navy met recently in an attempt to create a uniform policy that is followed by all branches of the military. "
My take on it is that they WILL have to serve their two years active duty. I can't see the military spending that kind of money in educating officers for four years and just letting them out of their commitment just because they want to play a game. They took an oath, to serve this country. I took the same oath three separate times. No one offered me any options of not serving and I wouldn't have accepted it anyway. I think they'll do their time but be working on their games the whole time anyway. Being rookie free agents, it makes sense for them to develop off the roster. Patriots should be able toretain their rights just like any other employer is bound to 're-hire' their employees when they return from active duty. If anyone knows anything different, please weigh in on the subject.
