Pats sign Nunn

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff May 11, 2009 04:52 PM

The Patriots announced today, via their Twitter page, that they have signed rookie free agent WR Terrence Nunn.

Nunn was the second all-time leading receiver at Nebraska.

The Patriots revealed last week that they had three receivers in for tryouts, and Nunn was one of last week's tryouts.

Nunn is a longer shot to earn a roster spot.

  1. Darryl-
How quickly they're absorbing knowledge in the little time they have?

  1. the WR signings are the same as when we had C.J. Jones, just fodder for now and if they are lucky they might make the practice squad.

  1. You also need extra bodies in football as injuries can happen very frequently, even in mini camp workouts (see recent draft pick McKenzie).

  1. I agree with darryl, this makes 92 players, which means 12 can't be under contract. How can any team evaluate 92 players?
Certain players can't possibly get a fair shake. Ninety two? c'mon!

  1. Mac, good point. The Pats need WRs to evaulate the CBs, without risking Moss or Welker to unnecessary injury.

  1. Course Mac is right. Injuries can happen at anytime, including during the offseason. Even if some of the players don't make it to the 80 man roster, many of the players stay with the team as a practice player (scout). Even though underlooked, these players help prepare Moss, Mayo and such. I don't understand what the fuss is all about. NFL teams have been doing this for years. So do college football programs with walk-ons.

  1. The comments on roster size are so off base it's laughable. Please take a moment to read this piece from 7/21/2008 and educate yourselves a bit on what the coaches and front office people in the NFL feel about this topic, because their opinion actually counts and makes more sense: http://www.usatoday.com/sports/football/nfl/redskins/2008-07-21-rosters-size_N.htm

  1. The Pat's have the best talent scouts in the league (in my opinion). I bet they sit in on every camp held, we'll get the best 53 out of 92.

  1. It is comments like those made by darryl and roger that make me realize that Boston sports fans are not the "smartest" in the country. I'm sure that d and r were part of the group questioning Brady's commitment to football after his injury and marriage.

  1. Well they already covered the Dalai Lama...now they have a "Nunn".....looks like they're covering all their bases.

Up next, look for a possible trade for Mushin Muhammed. :)

  1. They dont have to evaluate 92 players. 40-45 are already evaluated (Pretty much every vetran from last year) so they only have to evaluate 40-45 of those they are broken into 9 -10 positional groups. So each position coach only has to really look at 5 - 6 new players and decise if any of them are worth a shot at making the roster / practice squad. And, as any manager with any experience will tell you, these guys can probably make that decision within the first half of the first real practice.

  1. mike,

do you think the patriots are intentionally delaying the signing of contracts with the recently drafted rookies in order to have more bodies in training camp? seems like a no-brainer decision and no downside to either the team or the players.

when i hear that the patriots have the highest number of players in training camp out of all the teams in the nfl, i have to think it's by design and not by accident.

  1. Obviously, he doing for a reason. But why? The only thing I could up with is seeing how so many teams prey on the released players outta New England. Maybe he's doing this so there is a better opportunity for his style of players making it thru the waiver process. Giving the team a higher percentage of potential scheme fit players to sign to the practice squad to develop. I mean, with the New England roots spreading like Denver, K.C and Cleveland. You know they'll be looking at the moves he'll make after the first couple of cuts.Oh, And where the h-ell's Jason Taylor, already?!
