Rookie minicamp: Julian Edelman

Posted by Chris Forsberg, Boston.com Staff May 5, 2009 10:36 AM

All this week we'll try to pass along a video clip from a rookie that attended minicamp with the Patriots last week at Gillette Stadium. Today's featured player: Julian Edelman, the quarterback-turned-wide receiver out of Kent State, who impressed onlookers with his quickness and change of direction while working at his new position.

Check out the video above as Edelman talks after the first practice session Friday, fielding questions on his transition and that of fellow Kent State product Jermail Porter, a collegiate wrestler trying to make the Patriots' roster as a lineman.

The Globe's Mike Reiss talked about Edelman last week in recapping Friday's first practice session.

  1. If BB was filling the roster based on those that master the Patriot interview technique....he'd be a starter! Best of luck, Julian.

  1. Sheesh, this early and he's already interviewing like a Patriot veteran.

  1. It seems like everyone of the new players has the Patriots mantra down...give-up zero real information & at the same time stress hard work, team first, do what's asked of, hope to contribute to winning, etc.

Mike- do you think that's a common trait among all rookies, or just those here in NE? It might be interesting to see what the top picks of other teams are saying & focusing on, just for comparison. Any idea if there's a site through NFL (or elsewhere) to find that, or would one need to start scanning the Official Blogs from other teams, individually?

Just wondering on another note - I also noticed he's wearing Bledsoe's #11 - could that be any indication he may still be looked upon as a QB if God forbid, he's needed there?

  1. Reporter: What color is the sky?
Patriot: That's a good question, we'll just have to see how everything comes together, I think it's too early to really say.

    Reporter: Are you married?
Patriot: Thanks for asking, Im just trying to work hard and do what's asked of me.

    Reporter: What is 2+2?
Yeah, we'll have to look at film and study hard, but I think in the end we should be competitive.

  1. Stop Newport, RI corruption is absolutely right - they all already understand the Belichick mantra. And the more they hear it, the more they'll start to believe it, and the more they believe it, the better their chances are of helping out this team.

It's one thing to say "team first" but it's another to actually follow those words with actions. But by drafting guys who can understand the mantra, you're already halfway there.

I'm excited about Edelman. I don't think we'll see that much of him this season, but when we do, I suspect it could be spectacular.

  1. That interview sucked. Talk about playing it safe. Brady is much more interesting than that. It's gotta be brutal covering the Pats sometimes, but at least you get to cover folks who are good at what they do. I am highly interested in what Edelman can bring to the team....looks like a Welker clone on some of that footage.
