Brady the All-Decade choice at quarterback

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff June 23, 2009 11:15 AM

With one year left in the decade, ESPN.com could be flagged for a false start for having an "All-Decade" week.

Yet it's still nice to take a step back and consider some of the dominant players of the last nine seasons.

On Monday, ESPN.com had its All-Decade defensive team and no Patriot was part of the club. A strong case could be made for Richard Seymour over Kris Jenkins (Seymour is an end in the 3-4 defense, although he is better characterized as a tackle based on his responsibilities).

Today, the All-Decade offensive team is unveiled and the lone Patriot is quarterback Tom Brady.

Brady's three Super Bowl championships gave him the edge over Peyton Manning by ESPN.com decision-makers.

  1. Two Words of Caution:

    Bernard Pollard

Lets see him back on the field before we put this kid on the all-decade team

  1. Sapp seems like a dubious pick to me.

  1. Good for Tom!

I'd certainly rather have him as my quarterback than Manning, but I wasn't sure those voters would see it the same way.

It's a little difficult too, because Manning has played two more years this decade than Tom. I guess one ring just isn't enough to put the big dope over the top.

  1. Keyshawn says that it makes sense to pick Marvin Harrison and Torry Holt over Randy Moss because "they both won Super Bowls"! By that logic, we should take Deion Branch over Randy Moss.

  1. I find it odd that even though Brady won 3 Super Bowls Manning was considered the #1 quarterback in the league by the "experts". Brady was often listed as #1A, but he was always listed as second fiddle. Manning's lone Super Bowl seemed to temporarily validate the "experts" opinions.

However, as soon as Brady gets a Pro Bowl caliber receiver in Randy Moss and obliterates the record books he vaults to clear cut #1 status.

Many of us have been saying Brady is better than Manning from day one. The Super Bowl victories and playoff success should have sealed the deal. It was obvious that with quality receivers Brady would put up similar stats to Manning.

The whimsical nature of the "experts" really peeves me sometimes.

  1. As a Diehard Steelers and looking at it from a 3rd party, Tom Brady is by far the best QB in football. Even after Pats beat the Rams a few years ago, I had Brady better than Manning. I believe the best QBs are BRADY, MANNING AND ROETHELISBERGER. I think Big Ben is the second best clutch QB behind Brady. I even can say Brady is the best QB to ever play the game...right there with Joe Montana....

  1. Look. None of this really matters. Take Basketball where apparently Kobe has been annointed the greatest player ever. There is barely any mention of Bird and its usually in a subtext. The point here is that these are the players we will be telling our grandchildren about (Bird, McHale, Parrish - Espo, Cheevers and Orr - Yaz, Fisk, Williams - Grogan, Nelson, Francis) and relaying every detail of exaclty what we were doing and who we were with at that moment that they achieved greatness. Who care what others think. We have our hero's and memories.

  1. Ricky, I must admit that Steeler fans like you on this board can be pretty objective.

Big Ben plays his best football when it counts the most. Game's never over when he has the ball within 8 points.

For all his talent and gaudy regular season stats, P.Manning's done exceedingly little in the post-season. Colts recent one & done was a perfect example and does anyone think it will get better?

  1. RicKD you need to go back and look at the numbers that defense put up.Besides the Ravens they've had one of the better defenses for about 5-6yrs.Googled it

  1. MikeinNH thankyou for the words. I have alot of respect for the Pats organization and I watch most of there games. Your right about Peyton Manning. He is good regular season QB but Post season is NOT good...Here are some Post Season stats for you...7 wins and 8 losses..........56% completion......22 td....18 int's.....
    In the 8 losses....13 points a game......regular season...27 points a game...

  1. Does anyone really care what ESPN thinks? They have become increasingly irrelevant with regard to "reporting and news" as each sport develops its own TV network; why else do they come up with idiotic and sensational programs like "Who's Now" and "Around The Horn"? Its because they have nothing substantive to offer in the way of analysis and they resort to garbage programming. They resemble "Access Hollywood" and "Entertainment Tonight" more and more each day.

  1. Ricky - B. Kraft has often cited how supportive the Rooney family was at the beginning of his ownership.

Here in N.E., the Pats SuperBowl-winning season play-off wins in Ketchup Stadium akin to Sox winning in House-o-Ruth to go to 2003 World Series. The tougher the opponent & venue, the sweeter the victory.

This season, I predict a decisive win for Pats @Indy given Colts decline and the eerie stillness of Lucas fieldhouse. Unlike Pats & Steelers, the Indy/Manning era is not sustainable.

  1. MikeinNH, Yes the Pats have success in Heinz stadium 2001 and 2004 championship games. The Patriots need better pass rush this year and they should be hard to beat....Maybe Patriots vs Steelers for AFC championship again.

  1. As good as Montana ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha hahhahahahha

  1. Joe, I am not even a Patriots fan and I believe he is the best....Brady would have 4 rings if The lucky catch and Asante Samuel dropped sure interception...and maybe 5 rings if defense didnt relax in 2006 championship game against Colts...remember..21-0 halfime lead.....they would have beat Chicago in Super Bowl.....

  1. After courting Jason Taylor, no mystery that Pats would like to add veteran OLB help. No special insight from me, but IMO:
Burgess upside: $3.5m not a cap buster, Moss probably has inside info on his attitude, work ethic, etc. Free agent in 2010 (convenient given cap uncertainties)
Questions: gas remaining in the tank - his stats have fallen significantly the last 2 year - and can he move from 4-3 DE (I believe) and learn & execute the 3-4 OLB role with the discipline required to know when to set-the-edge, pass rush, cover the flat.

But as a Steeler fan you already know know this...

Posted by mikeinNH June 24, 09 03:44 PM
  1. Yes Mike, I do know his..ha ha.........I know Burgess has speed but your right, his production has fallen but Belicheck knows how to get the best out of people. Veteren cuts are coming soon, so maybe they have there eye on someone. Can't wait until it all starts....

  1. MikeinNH..did u read the all decade team defense???
DE: micheal strahan and Jason Taylor....Seymour is my choice but he doesn'tget the stats becos of 3-4 end
DT: Warren Sapp and Kris Jenkins.....Sapp yes but Jenkins....always hurt
    LB's....Brooks, Urlacher and Lewis.....Great group...
DB: Champ Bailey and Troy Vincent.....Bailey yes but Ty Law is my other choice'
    S...Troy Polamalu and Ed Reed....the best 2

  1. Not that it matter, but there is actually two years left in the decade. 2000 was the last year of last century, which is comprised of ten decades. 2001-2010 is the first decade of the 21st century...but I get it, like Barbie said "Math is hard!" and so is figuring out a calendar.
