Evans talks Saints, Patriots in New Orleans

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff June 9, 2009 10:30 PM

In a piece published on the Times-Picayune website on Sunday, former Patriots fullback Heath Evans talks about bringing part of his experience in New England with him to New Orleans.

This comment stood out to me:

"I left a great coach in Bill Belichick; I think I'm coming to another one. I left a great quarterback in Tom Brady; I'm coming to another one in Drew. So Tommy to Drew, that was a lateral move for me."

Another notable part of the piece was when Saints coach Sean Payton said that New Orleans valued Evans' time in New England. This seemed to be an example of how playing for the Patriots sometimes increases a player's value on the open market.

"Evans is a guy that has won a lot of games, and any time that you can get a player from a successful organization, I think it adds to your team chemistry."

  1. That's the first time, other than fantasy football, where I've heard anybody equate Tom Brady with Drew Brees.

  1. Yea but look at how successful most of those players that have moved on to other teams have been. Maybe they should be looking at that before they think they are moving on to greener pastures.

  1. There is a poll on profootballtalk.com asking if Rodney Harrison should be in the Hall of Fame. Rodney is about 1000 votes in the red. Go there and vote for him!

  1. If Tom Brady to Drew Brees is a lateral move, Giselle Bundchen to Rosie O'Donnell is a lateral move.

  1. Hm, so on the flip side, does playing for a losing team (i.e., the Lions) detract from a player's value and diminish his ability to foster better chemistry? I certainly hope not!

  1. Right... Brady to Brees is no setback... and Sean Payton is a "great" coach, just like BB?! I mean, I know you gotta be 'politicaly correct' and say the right things about your new team, but I don't think even those guys believe you. At least try to keep it reasonable...

  1. It makes you wonder all those interviews Evans gave in NE were crap, if he is comparing these 2 coaches and QB's?

  1. Did Evans really just compare BB to Sean Payton? That is like comparing Bob Ryan to John Tomasi!

  1. I think the RB's are really going to feel the absence of Evans, specifically Maroney and those who can't turn the corner.

BB pulled him off the scrap heap in Miami and turned him into an asset, as he has done time and time again.

Best of luck, Heath. Here's hoping you are cut and brought back to New England! While Bush needs you for his outside game, Maroney needs you even more.

  1. Guys seriously, we didn't offer him a contract. It's not like he had a choice to play here and chose the Saints. He was never offered the opportunity to stay, what the heck was he supposed to say?

  1. @ michael

    he couldve taken less money....

Anyway, Drew brees is a great QB and i think if he had another great WR they could really go places - but unless he proves himself by winning a SB you cant really compare him to the "elites" (tb,pm,br)

  1. Alex,
Just like you would take less money looking for a job. lol

Do you know what "not offered a contract" means?

  1. Good for Heath.

It was nice of him to pay respect to his former teammates, and it was a good idea to be respectful and supportive of his new teammates. It's not like Brees is exactly a bum. What was he supposed to say "Well, Tom Brady is so great I'm going to have to used to the idea of playing with a much worse player."

I don't think that would be very productive.

  1. Its funny when ppl say 'take less money' that notion is laughable

  1. I like Brees. He is a sound qb. Put equating him to Brady is just plain silly! Silly, I said!

  1. He obviously went out of his way to say that moving Drew Brees is on the same level as Tom Brady... unless of course that quote was taken out of context. No, that would never happen...

  1. Richter: I nominate your Giselle / Rosie analogy for best post of the year.

Worst post? The recent pathetic attempt to draw an analogy between Pats management with the corrupt characters in Animal Farm, including a shot at MikeR of all people. That will be hard to top.

  1. Drew Brees has had crazy success without the WR talent available in Boston.

  1. Brian, Tom Brady had crazier success before he had the WR talent available in Boston.....
